Domain Names for a Review Site

How important is the domain name for a review site? If it is just as important as a regular site or blog should the keyword be "review" or should it be the product being reviewed? Also, is it me or are reviews being overdone?

The domain should contain the keywords for the product being reviewd without infringing on any trademarks. Using the word "review" in a domain name is not recommended these days because yes, review sites are oversaturated and Google considers them search engine spam.

Generic is always better in my opinion, unless you are going to be reviewing a specific product.

Something like 'SEOReviews.com or 'WhitehatReviews.com etc

I'd have to disagree with Review sites being penalized strictly for the domain name. I have had a few review sites and haven't experienced any 'spam' penalties. At the end of the day, your content is what will identify your site as spam or not. Sure, your domain may factor in but has far less influence in the rankings.

While a good domain name will never hurt you, exactly how important it is will depend a bit on how you generate traffic.

If you rely mainly on SEO, a domain that matches what people are looking for is very important. You want the domain to match your keyword as closely as you can without violating any trademarks or affiliate program terms of service.

    For example:

SonyCellPhoneReviews.com would likely be seen as violating Sony's trademark. Someone will probably jump on this example and tell you it's OK but, unless they happen to be one of Sony's lawyers, their opinion doesn't matter.

CellPhoneReviews.com/sony would likely be okay because the brand name/trademark is not in the top level domain.

If the keyword set you are targeting includes the words 'review' or 'reviews', try to get it in the domain name. If you do a little digging here, you should find several threads that go into much deeper detail on picking domain names.

Superficial, cookie-cutter, slanted, biased, and other inferior reviews are WAY overdone.

Thoughtful, accurate, original, fair reviews will always find a place.

Good luck on your review site...
