Just a quick question

Hi all,

I am soon going to make my personal blog and as my name is Liam Ireland I want that to be my domain name. But what should I use?

liamireland.com or,
liam-ireland.com

Also, do websites rank worse if they have hyphens in their domains?
I heard rumors of this.

Thanks for any replies.

No, they don't ... according to Google, and Matt Cutts. A lot of people believe they do, though Cutts does try (pretty hard) to correct this urban myth on his blog, on video, and so on.

I think either is fine, Liam. I don't see any particular advantage to having the hyphenated version, though, I must say.

I don't see any advantage either but i want to ask,do you intend selling your blog sometime in the future because if you do it might be a bit challenging getting someone to buy your yourname.com as their website .I made that mistake and chose my name as my personal domain name .

if you don't intend to sell it then it is fine

I don't imagine I am going to sell it, also, to be honest I can't really think of/find any other good names. So I'll just keep it as my name.

You know, if you are going to blog about a certain hobby you have, (model airplanes, recipes, dance, fitness, etc.) then this would be a keyword so you should name your blog that. If you're blogging about everything, then using your name would be fine. Don't use a Hyphen because it's to hard for your readers to remember, (believe it or not) I just checked and you can't get Ireland.com or even Liam.com, but LiamIreland.com is available.

Yeah I would go without the hyphens if you can prevent it. On top of many things it looks a lot better.

I always go for non-hyphenated first, if it's not available, then go hyphen.

I've got some highly ranked sites that are hyphenated.
