Question about domain names.

I am interested in getting started with Internet marketing as I need a source of income for my growing family and VA disability only goes so far. I recently bought a domain name drimaffiliates.info but I have been seeing a lot of posts about buying niche keyword domains. So my question is should I invest in niche keyword domains or can I make niche subdomains at my site I have and be just as successful?

Hi, having the niche keyword in the domain name really helps with the SEO of the site, but is not absolutely essential. You may not even need good SEO if you are using other traffic generation methods.

first off i would look at the direct keyword.

in this case drim affiliates gets no traffic.

and you probably won't rank for affiliate right off the bat so i would definitely get a more targeted name for what you are going for.

as a beginning internet marketer i would focus on a market that you could provide more value in... perhaps help other VA people with something... ie VA loans, Va assistance or something like that.

there are many niches out there like this and you have much more to offer in this area i would guess :-)

a keyword domain name is a key ingredient in SEO. But its not the end of the world if you dont have one.

Just make sure its easy too spell ad easy to remember!

And a .com looks more professinal...

I agree about the .com looking more professional but I am trying to start on a shoestring budget right now. The difference between 2.00 for .info and 10.00 for .com would have meant no hosting this month. When I first registered it I didn't realize the importance of the name and only had limited knowledge of clickbank. After reading this site for a day I see several things I have done wrong and am still hoping to turn a profit this month.

Originally it was bought to try to promote clickbank products but I quickly realized I had no idea how to draw the traffic I needed there. So now I am spending a lot of time on the forums here looking for ideas on how to monetize it. Originally I was planning on getting into the World Of Warcraft Niche since I use to play and know a little about it. I found out it is too competitive for my budget. Long story short, at this point I am at a loss as to what to do.

    hi drim,

i would find a new targeted niche where you can provide value and bridge the gap between the questions the market has and the answers they need.

set up a simple site in your niche, field the questions, and lead them to stuff that pays you.

so many people are looking for the automated stuff that they forget that this business is as easy as answering questions in your market.

if you are going for the world of warcraft niche... get a targeted domain.

bottom line... dont mess around... make it work the first time!

i heard a great quote in a book today:

"if you dont have the time to do it right the first time... how are you gonna have time to fix it?" paraphrased

I agree with the quote. However I have the time just not the experience to do it right the first time . I am working on the experience this round and hoping to come out ahead. I do get what you are saying about fielding questions. That said, would I be better served doing a blog on Wordpress at a sub domain on my site? Once the wordpress is setup, what is a good way to make money on it other then clickbank and selling my own product which I do not have at this time? Also I see lots of people talking about awber (spelling) for autoresponder. Why should I use that instead of the autoresponder that comes with my hostgator account?

At least 2 keywords among the domain name, and as for having the keyword as a folder in your domain helps but does not have the power of the keywords within the top level domain itself. So lets say as an example that I am targeting the keyword "affiliate marketing", in order of most powerful if I use a dot info TLD including both words in keyword as of this writing would be:

    1) affiliatemarketing.com or affiliate-marketing.com
    2) affiliatemarketing.info or affiliate-marketing.info
    3) whatever.com/affiliate-marketing or affiliate-marketing.whatever.com
    4) whatever.info/affiliate-marketing or affiliate-marketing.whatever.info
    5) whatever.com/whatever
    6) whatever.info/whatever

Thank you Bernard that helped put things in perspective for me a little better. I see the importance of a keyword domain now, however now I am going to work on damage control and try to make a profit from my mistake.
