Online Shoppers - Do You Buy Through Affiliate Sites?

I've been doing this for a while and wondered if anyone else was doing the same...

When I'm going to buy something online, and doing research (and I buy a lot of stuff online) I make it a habit to do a regular, old Google search for "Product Name Review" and see what comes up.

Of course, the SERPs usually present me with more affiliate review sites than i can shake a stick at. And that's fine. I like to see what other online marketer are up to.

But more importantly, I try to purchase through these sites, as long as the affiliate marketer did a good job with their site and provided some real value in their review.

A site doesn't have to be perfect (God knows mine aren't) but if I find an affiliate review site that has good information and doesn't just copy/paste from the sales page, then I tend to click on thru and make a purchase.

My reasoning for doing this?

First, I figure that the person who built the site put in their due diligence and made a helpful site that provides good information.

Second, I think (even if it's not true) that maybe, just maybe, this site was put up by someone who has not made a single dollar online. I know how excited I got when I made my first sale, and I know that one sale was the catalyst that kept me going through months without making a dime, while I learned the ropes and got better.

Third, I know that there's talk of Amazon doing away with their affiliate program one of these days, and I figure if they see sales coming in through affiliate links, they might be more convinced to keep their program going (I know this is a pipe-dream, but I like to picture the Amazon big-wigs sitting around and saying "Well, Steve bought $500 worth of merchandise through affiliate links last month, so let's keep this puppy going...")

Yeah, I know that's pure fantasy, but it's fun as hell to imagine that I'm really that important

And I don't just do this for Amazon, I do it when I'm buying Clickbank stuff, or basically anything that I purchase online.

Just curious if anyone else does this, and why or why not?

Thanks,
Steve

I only buy through affiliate links if I know the affiliate. Otherwise I go directly to the site, say Amazon or whatever.

I buy through affiliate links whenever I can. Sometimes I can't find one.

I figure that what goes around comes around. And it is not costing me any more to buy through an affiliate link and sometimes, like in the case of the cookware set I just bought, the affiliate site was way better than the listing on amazon.

And I really appreciated that the person had spent the time puttig together so much useful information.

Great point. Karma/Reaping what you sow, is a great motivator to purchase through affiliate links when possible. Especially when the creator of the site really comes through and delivers value with their review site.

When my wife and I were researching cookware sets, we came across this really nice site about cuisinart cookware. The people who had put the site together had done an excellent job of setting the site up and researching information. Real stuff, too, like how triple clad cookware disperses the heat and how it compared with other sets of cookware.

It was a very well done presentation, and I really appreciated the good work they had done. they definitely deserved to be compensated for doing that. And I felt good about buying through them. And the cookware was top notch when we got it. All around an excellent experience.

If they sell me on the product to the point I am ready to buy then yes! It's a lot easier clicking on their affiliate link than manually going to the site and hunting down the product to buy it.

I go directly buy to the site. It's the safest way to do. And i feel secure with the product i buy.

Wait a minute. You do know that this is an internet marketing forum right?

I find your comment to be beyond mind boggling.

I don't find affiliate sites objective enough for my tastes unless it's like PC Magazine that really does a thorough, side by side comparison of several similar products, with no clear bias.

I go to Amazon and directly to the source after I've read "objective" and real reviews from unbiased parties.

If I've already made up my mind that I want to buy a particular product, then I purchase through an affiliate.

However, if I'm undecided or need to compare items, then I prefer to go to the Amazon and read the reviews and purchase from there.

I always try to go through affiliates, especially those I know. Just seems fair to me and I believe in the "do unto others" good karma. Quite often I do research ahead of time on a product, but I deliberately look for affiliates before I buy.

I rarely find myself, as a buyer, on affiliates' sites, to be honest. When I'm out to make a purchase, I usually know already exactly what it is I want and where I'm going to find and buy it (95% of the time it's from Amazon or some other retailer I've bought from before), so I go straight there.

That said, on the rare occasion I'm referred to a product through an affiliate link, I'm not one of those people who goes out of my way to clear my cookies just to deprive the affiliate of his/her commissions. Since I'm paying no extra, anyway, what'd be the point in that?

My feelings EXACTLY. Definitely not what i would have expected to read here. Amazon won't allow me to shop via my own affiliate account, so I always log on via an Amazon link provided by an animal charity that I support.
