If you are trying to get 'backlinks' to your site Indexed then you can try creating an RSS Feed which includes all the URLs that contain a backlink to your site. Then submit your feed to a site like Pingler, Pingoat or Pingomatic.

Or try submitting a list of all the URLs which contain a link to your site to PingFarm.

If you are just trying to Index your new sites, and/or its internal pages, then I find that Bookmarking the pages will do the trick. And the indexing normally takes 2-5 days. And I use a great fre.e bookmarking service (Also has a paid version.) called IMAutomator to give me Bookmarks to my site pages from 15 different sites.

You need to be patient to get back links indexed . I usually wait for 2 to 3 weeks , before i really get impatient .

I don't get how it works either. When I perform backlink checks, the results for Google sometimes show 0 links, when there are hundreds out there.

Don't use Google to check for backlinks. I have thousands to some sites and only a few hundred show up on Webmaster Tools.

Use Yahoo Site Explorer and you will see a more accurate listing of your backlinks. Either way, keep keep feeding backlinks naturally and you will see your site move up. After all, that's the goal right?

I had exactly the same problem. I knew there were plenty links out there but were not showing up in Google. All of a sudden, they all appeared in Google at once. Just keep linking and pinging your links and all the usual stuff and they will show up in Google eventually.

You don't want to rush Google into indexing your backlinks. That said, it can take up to a year before all of your backlinks are found and are having their full effect. Normally it only takes a few weeks for them to be found, but don't expect them to pass maximum link juice until at least a couple months pass.

Patience is very important here if you want to get your site indexed by Google. It is as simple as that.
