FTP Problem, please help.

by magiclouie 14 replies
Hello Warriors,

I tried to clean my root directory by deleing all the files so that I can install the latest wordpress version but the problem is, the old wp-content can’t be deleted.

All the files and directories are gone now except that. I tried to delete it once more but still, it can’t be.

What seems to be the problem? I am using filezilla.

What to do about this? Is this has something to do with file permissions?

Please help me on this.

Thanks,
Louie

Sometimes these sorts of things can be a little funny like that. I would close the FTP program, open it up and try again. If you still have no luck, sometimes going inside the folder and deleting all the files first will then allow you to get rid of that folder.

Yes, it's probably a permissions issue. Most likely the directory is set so that your FTP account is not the owner of the directory.

You can try setting the file permissions using a CHMOD command and setting it to 777. If that doesn't work you need to look at the owner/group of the folder and see if your FTP users is either the owner or in the group that has ownership priveleges.

Also, what WillR said, try deleting all the files in the folder first.

Do you have access to the files through any other method besides FTP? If so, I would just delete it that way.

      Here's another thing to try....

When you create a new Wordpress install, it is done through the browser, so the user/group in control is the websuer.

Have you tried re-installing over the existing install without deleting the files?

I would say delete them all and reinstall it.

That is exactly what I am trying to do mate, but the problem is the old wp-content directory can't be deleted for whatever reason.

I get this once in a while too, try logging into your hosting account and delete it via the web panel instead of with your FTP program. If that doesn't work, just rename the folder for now so you can at least keep working. You can worry about it later.

Again mate, I did that already. I just renamed it for the time being.

I am crossing my fingers that I can finally delete this directory.

You seem to have some weird issues with Wordpress. You had the problem with the permalinks the other day as well. Who are you hosting with?

Yes WillR, I am really trying to convince my boss that preferably we have to transfer to the other web hosting, I personally like Hostgator.

The site is hosted at https://theconsole.netregistry.com.au

My boss thought that Hostgator can't host sites that end with .au but when I contacted Hostgator, they can.

This is the testing one, http://www.broadwaterthoroughbreds.com.au/blog and finally my boss initially approved it so we need to transfer everything to the root directory.

I am having so much issues which I have never encountered before.

Do you think this has something to do with my web hosting?

            Thanks,
            MagiclOuie

If you were able to rename it, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to delete it???? Renaming requires the same permissions.

That's what I thought at first, but I just simply can't. My webhosting told me to delete it inside the web panel, again I have no luck.

        I appreciate all the help.
