I'm currently writing a new I.M. report, and I'm talking extensively about *WHY* people might get started online.

I believe that it's VERY important to think of ALL of the reasons why YOU personally are starting out online, and actually writing them down. I found that it really helps to move, motivate and inspire you to overcome the many obstacles that you'll face on the internet.

I think that everyone will have differing reasons for starting out online. Some people want to escape from their job, some people want to travel more, some people want to spend time with their families, some people want to be a millionaire and some people just want to live comfortable.

So let me ask you this...
WHAT IS YOUR 'WHY'?

I look forward to reading your answers!
Marc

P.S. If anyone would like a free review copy of the report when it's finished, just mention it in your post and I'll happily P.M. you a copy in exchange for a short testimonial.
  • Hey Mark see you at the weekend

My why was to get out of a full time job and get back to working for myself and the time freedom that allows. The main goal for me is to be able to afford to take up amateur racing which is by no means a cheap sport to be involved with! Especially with the cars I want to be racing

I would quite happily have a read and review of your report when it's ready

    Cheers

      Hey Simon!

Thanks for being the first to reply... I think this thread will get pretty busy with responses.

Awesome reply dude, I'll send over a copy of the report when it's done. Should be later this month I reckon.

Look forward to seeing you at the seminar this weekend, it's gonna ROCK!

      Marc!

Mark, I devote myself to Internet marketing because I'm a recluse with interests and hobbies that consume much of my waking hours, yet aren't especially marketable. IM affords a comfortable lifestyle without submitting myself to corporate wage slavery and the rat race to retirement. Incidentally, I accept your offer for a review copy.

    Hi Marc,

    I'm so glad you asked

I also believe that this is one of the most important things to mak clear to yourself and write down. I have taped a piece of paper on my laptop describing why I want to succeed in IM. It hangs in front of my screen so I'm "forced" to read it before I start working.

My biggest why is "FREEDOM". Freedom to control my business and income form anywhere with an internet connection. Freedom of the 9-5 schedule that most businesses follow. Freedom to live abroad for part of the year. I really love skiing and mountains, but in Denmark where I live you'd have to smoke something very bad for you if you want to experience either .

So I guess what really motivates me is the thought of being able to live in Austria or France where you can ski in the winther, and coming back home to enjoy the beautiful Danish summer.

I'd love to know, when your report is out

Our online biz is an extension of our daily real world biz. Since we cant be everywhere we put ourselves online so as to reach as many people as possible by giving them the option of a do it yourself kit that works for the most part like our daily biz does.

Why? Because it's there! Because we can!

My "why" I started and my "why" I keep doing it 8 plus years later are worlds
      apart.

I started because I was out of work, broke and, quite honestly, in danger of
losing my home and just about everything.

I continue today simply because if I stopped I'd probably become bored
      doing nothing but "fun" things.

I work only a few hours a month now (don't post here nearly as much as I
used to) and am as closed to "retired" as I can be without actually stopping.

I sometimes don't recognize the person I was 8 years ago. Trust me, I was
      one sorry sight.

I still enjoy, to some extent, product creation and writing sales letters. If
I didn't, I really would just give it all up, sell my domains and go hang out
with my friends playing magic or living in my recording studio.

One thing I know for certain, the "why" you do IM is very important. If it's
JUST to make money, unless you are incredibly dedicated or desperate,
you probably won't do very well.

Personally, if I were to start all over again and wasn't desperate for cash,
I'd pick something I truly had a love for that also had a demand and would
build a massive authority site. If necessary, I'd outsource the entire creation
of it initially, adding my own content based on my own personal experience
      as time went on.

I would either start a music instruction site, selling video lessons on playing
various instruments, maybe adding a forum for members, and whatever else
hit me OR...I would start a music review site, selling CDs and digital downloads
      through Amazon.

I might also start a Magic The Gathering deck building site. Not sure how
      to monetize it yet.

Point is, my "why" today would be much different from my "why" of 8 years
ago and the ONLY reason that "why" of 8 years ago worked is because I
refused to accept defeat, even though, to be perfectly honest, I had no real
love for anything I was doing. I certainly didn't get a thrill from selling natural
acne cures (my first Adwords campaign) or writing articles for other people.

But when you're faced with homelessness, you do what you have to do,
though sadly, some people don't even under those circumstances.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on like this. Hopefully, I've answered the
question. If not, please contact my complaint department.

I think Steven makes a very good point here.

Peoples "whys" will probably change quite often over time. I'm in the earlier stages of my internet marketing career and I am in internet marketing 1, because I need the money and 2, I can't stand to work for anyone else.

On the flip side, I have heard many successful marketers say they only do bits and bobs now to enable them to pursue their real passions and dreams whatever they might be.

Some people, once successful may take a more philanthropic approach to life and just do the bear minimum to keep the money coming in.

I definitely think over time, my "why" will change.

Height of Inspiration or Depths of Desperation?

It’s funny how I can find the money and the resources for
the things that I ‘have to’ do. The car transmission fails
and suddenly my brain goes into overdrive to solve this
pressing problem and get my vehicle back on the road.

The rent is due and the thought of being homeless during the
winter forms new neuron pathways between my left and right
brain. I find myself battling a sickness, and suddenly
life’s priorities shuffle themselves into the correct order.
Time spent with the family seems more pressing than the
business meeting that was so critical. In fact, when I’m
sick the only thought that dominates my mind is to regain my
    health. What motivates you?

On opposite ends of the spectrum of human motivation are
inspiration and desperation. The reasons that drive you to
act can be found somewhere along that continuum. I know that
many noble feats have been accomplished through love for
another person, but this can be classed as inspiration. Love
for the object inspired the lover to perform acts that would
    be hard to explain otherwise.

I must confess that I am closer to the ‘desperation’ end of
the spectrum than the ‘inspiration’ end. I am a deadline
type of guy. While in school, I always procrastinated until
I just had to write that term paper, study for that test
or-you may smile-pay for the tuition. It seemed the idea
that there was no way out placed my brains on steroids. I
happen to know many colleagues who operate on a similar
principle. At the same time, there were many students who
just had to get the paper completed a long time before the
    deadline.

Inspiration would appear to be a much nobler motivator than
desperation. Yet, it has always been said that necessity is
the mother of invention. Necessity is closer akin to
desperation than inspiration. It is often true that
desperation can lead to inspiration but seldom the other way
around. There are countless inventions which came about to
solve a pressing problem compared to those made for just a
    luxurious use.

Those who study direct response marketing tell us that
buyers respond more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure. In
other words, Mr. Jones is more likely to buy the central air
cooling system because it saves him money, than for the
reason that it keeps him cool in the summer. Statistics also
shows that the vast majority of those who inherit large sums
of money, either through family or the lottery, end up
losing their wealth or in some instances their minds.

This reminds me of the old adage: ‘Easy come, easy go’.
There are many parents who have passed on a legacy of
wealth, and hence laziness, to their posterity.

The critical point for the home business owner is
motivation. You can no longer lose your job because you are
late, tardy; hate the boss, disliked by fellow-workers and a
myriad of other reasons. Now you are the boss and have less
to fear outside of failing yourself! Your motivation must
now be intrinsic, and you have less people to blame for all
    your failures.

Although many tout the superior benefits of owning a home
business, the harsh reality of finding that motivation to
get out of bed when there are no traffic jams to beat leaves
    countless paralyzed.

My advice? ‘Know thyself’! Know what makes you tick and
‘trick’ yourself into that frame of mind. There are many
motivational speakers who teach that you should write out
your goals and even place a picture of your dream home next
to your workplace. Even though this may work for some-and it
doesn’t for me-, I think that contemplating the results for
failure can awake many giant ideas.

If you are on the inspiration end of the spectrum then
listening to motivational tapes and reading the stories of
those who overcame great odds, may just be the medicine for
    your soul.

Do you love being healthy or hate being sick? Do you love
having money or hate being broke? Do you love being with
your spouse or hate being away? Do you love being
independent or hate being bossed around? Do you love
happiness or hate being sad? These questions may all seem to
be two faces of the same coin but very different faces.

You may be like George Bernard Shaw who said, “You see
things; and you say ‘Why?’; But I dream things that never
were; and I say ‘Why not?’ Or, you may identify closer with
Dwight D. Eisenhower who said, “What counts is not
necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it’s the size
of the fight in the dog”.

You may be the dreamer or the dog engaged in mortal combat.
What counts most is to know who you are, and light the
appropriate burner on your motivational stove.

Started because I wanted an extra source of revenue to (in the beginning) fund my filmmaking dreams. Then something happened and I realized that I was a far better marketer than I was ever at telling a story through film/hd video.

I guess the cool thing is that if I ever get around to making those movies or youtube series, I'll have an excellent background on how to get it seen by thousands and even millions of people!

Why? Because i am my own boss and i am not working for others.
If i program, write, code as an employee i basically do it for someone else's profits...if he would not make profit OFF ME he would not have hired me...

Needless to say, i prefer to be the one with the profits and NOT working to grow the wallet of my boss The motivation is also about 1000x higher to do things "for myself" and then see the benefits when its done.

Wow! There are a lot of reasons why I'm in IM.

The biggest reason is that I couldn't find a job
here in the local market in my specialty. I've been
unemployed or underemployed since last September.
Now that the job market is supposedly recovering-
I don't have any desire to even look for a 9-5 (more
    like a 6-6)

The second biggest reason is (and I know this will
sound super conceded) I have never failed at anything
and I expected that trend to hold true in IM.

    And it is.

Sure, I have my moments and it took a lot of ideas
before I figured out exactly where my niche is, but I'm
now sitting on the edge of a great product launch and
am determined to make it work.

"Why?" That is a very important question. And you will succeed at the level at which it is answered. If your answer is just to make money, you will always be searching for that next big scheme and eventually fail. If it is to be your own boss, you may not have the discipline. If it is because you're doing what you like to do, you may not have the drive to do what you must do.

For me it was never one simple, easy, reductionist view of motivation, but rather for a complex net of reasons and ever expanding passionate goals. Answering the why from what is deepest inside you will make the difference between mediocrity and abundance.

"Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game."

Like Steven, my WHY has changed from what it was a few years ago. Firstly I wanted to do IM so I could be home with my kids - when they were younger. Now, my kids are 13, 11 and 9 and are driving me crazy

Now, I do IM because I have a child with behavior issues that spends a lot of time home and not at school, so it would be quite difficult for me to be working a normal job and try to deal with him too. I also really don't like the idea of going back to work for someone else.

My why has evolved a bit over the years...

    1. Beginning was make a bunch of money and help others

But took me a long time to figure out so it turned into

    2. Prove the doubters wrong

Then that worked and now it's more

    3. Be able to spend a lot of time with your kids because your dad had to drive 3 hours a day to work and you don't want that for them also the freedom aspect of being able to do pretty much whatever whenever has been a big motivator

    Hi Marc,

My why has also changed over the years.

I started online in 1999 because although I was already working for myself it was as a market trader and standing out in the rain and snow isnt great!

My success came with physical products, but it became too competitive after 5 or 6 years, so then I turned to IM to replace that business.

This year we moved to a dream house on the edge of a village overlooking the sea and fields, so now I my why is to make sure we can stay here

I'd also like to take a look when you've finished the report...

    Thanks
