Internet marketing is like fishing?!

I was researching something totally unrelated to IM, in my "regular" job as a translator - something related to bass fishing (I have no knowledge of and very little interest in angling). And I came across this article: Top 10 Ways to Catch a Trophy Bass

I thought the parallels with building an IM business were quite remarkable! Actually, you will have to read the article again to believe he is NOT talking about IM

The author starts off by saying:

For a long time people have asked me, "What can I do to catch a giant bass" ? I think many people mistakenly believe that there must be one thing which will make all the difference........ A magic pill, a silver bullet, some tight lipped secret which the anglers who are consistently catching trophy bass must know about, but won't tell them. Well friends, if there is such a secret, I certainly have not discovered it, in all of my years on the water.
The fact of the matter is, there are hundreds of little things which all add up to eventual success.
So far all very applicable to IM - perhaps success in online business has more to do with general human mentality (and therefore fishing, too, and probably an infinity of other activities) than we might have thought! Read the rest of the article to discover some more gems!

My favourites:

10) Doing things differently than the crowd.
1) Choosing the right lake to fish on.

Maybe you can find some good takeaways in this article too!

      Hi markowe
      Of course you are right.
Making money these days is like hunting, fishing and gathering tens of thousands years ago.
We have different tools but rules of the game are the same. To kill huge mammoth you need a lot of brain, persistence, adroitness, focus and courage.
Exactly same qualities we need to be successful in IM and any other business J

sure you could think of it that way.

i especially like the fact that it says to be in the right water and do things differently as well.

without doing things differently you will receive average cash.

Where the he|| is Jonathan Mizel when you need him?

Jonathan made this same analogy, specifically about fly fishing, back in 98 or so. "It's all about choosing the bait they're already surfacing for... The closer the match, the bigger the catch."

Before you get stuck into online network marketing understand that it is the same principles as fishing, preparation is everything.
You need to make sure that you have everything you need to start capturing leads online which is an auto-responder, lead capture pages and the right bait.
Depending on what type of lead you are going after you have to use the right bait for that lead, if you are going after a network marketer you need an offer (Bait) that a network marketer would be attracted to, for example: A training course on how to generate leads etc.

Those are great quotes as metaphors. Internet marketers need to be creative, think outside the box. Most people just follow good internet marketers steps and do the same thing they do when a trend is getting hot. That is completely wrong. You have to be the one that people follow, that way you'll make the money. You can't stay a follower your whole life.

The other quote is choosing the right niche to make money on, for people who didn't understand. It's true, if you find a great niche, you're much more likely to make money then a saturated or unsuccessful niche.

For me its been a lot like bodybuilding. Lots of hard work, training, dieting and discipline.

Heres something to think about newbies with a get rich quick mentality...

Would you walk into a crowded bodybuilding gym and ask a big guy

"How can I get big in just a couple of weeks? ....I really dont want to have to lift a lot of weight or do much work ..."

      Hi markowe/ramone_johnny,

This is funny, as I've often used the fishing analogy because I see the parallels, as well as applying the lessons I learn from my own personal fitness regime.

In fact, you can go as deep as you like with the analogies, because the way the world is set up, depending on how you view it, you can see it all as a series of lessons that can be applied to anyones personal struggle. There are parallels everywhere and some would suggest that they are there for a reason, if only we stop and take the time to look for them and also open our mind to them being there (which is also a fun activity, as well as an educational one.)

Why are animals on this planet?

Well apart from the obvious uses we find for them, if you read enough you will find that various tribes and peoples (such as the native Americans) used them as exercise books for their education.

I once read about a native American who had a conversation with a white man. The white man asked him why so many of them sat around doing nothing. He explained that they weren't doing nothing at all, they were working hard observing the world around them - especially the animals - in order that they could become wise.

For example, when an animal has some illness or injury, they would watch what it did. Often, it would rub the wound on some plant, or eat some plant. If it recovered, they now knew which plant could be used to cure that kind of injury/illness and what to do with it.

I was once looking out of the window and noticed a spider at work on one of his webs. I decided to take some time to watch it for a while as it toiled and to compare it's life and daily survival tasks with my own.

Guess what kind of business it taught me lessons about?

      Johnny,

Through training, have you found the connections between physical and mental strength? For example, I have found that when it becomes too difficult to increase mental strength directly, when it is required, I instead just focus on increasing physical strength. The thing is, it takes mental strength and discipline to go through with the act of increasing the physical strength - bingo.

Im not quite sure I understand your question dude

But what I do know is this...

Bodybuilding takes a level of mental toughness unlike any other Ive ever known. The workouts, the constant food, the injuries, the supplements, the broken relationships, the dieting, and the ridicule. Ive been training now for 14 years and gained 50kg (110 lbs) I remember a lot of workmates laughed at me when I told them I joined a gym. I go to parties and I dont drink. People make snide comments. I go to barbques and take my own food in a tupperware container - they dont get it. Internet marketing is the SAME. People will ridicule what they dont understand!

Guess what? These people are the same ones that are overweight now and will be wondering how on earth I can afford a lamborghini later

I once calculated that Ive probably done over 35,000 seated rows, 50,000 arm curls and 40,000 squats. Crazy hey?

For some that wont mean anything, infact most people dont care. Either way, I dont mind. For me its my lifestyle and I love it

One thing I've learnt in the gym, and this has really applied to internet marketing is that you gotta WORK YOUR ARSE OFF, to get ahead, and NEVER GIVE UP.

If you have a relentless attitude, failure will never tolerate persistance

Yeah there is no magic bullet, but in fishing you can't just throw your line into the water and hope for a bite. Sure you may get lucky here and there, but knowing your prey would actually be the 'secret'. Like in IM. Knowing what to do, how to do it is going to be the secret to IM. I am not saying there is some type of 'secret' but there is a very vague method that everyone uses. Backlinks, Article Marketing, Profile links, Bookmarking, On Page SEO, etc... Those are the magic bullets.
We know that certain types of fish, for instance small mouth bass tend to hang in deep waters because their prey goes to the deeper parts (for the most part) for protection (also depending on the temperature and weather). Or you could cheat and get a fish finder.

      Hi ramone_johnny,

Im not quite sure I understand your question dude
      You said -

One thing I've learnt in the gym, and this has really applied to internet marketing is that you gotta WORK YOUR ARSE OFF, to get ahead, and NEVER GIVE UP.

If you have a relentless attitude, failure will never tolerate persistance
So what you are saying is that what you learnt in the gym are these things -

      * never give up
      * have a relentless attitude

Those two things are mental attributes, rather than physical. But you learnt them in the gym, which on the surface is all about physical training.

So you did (kind of) answer my question, even though you didn't understand it.

What I am saying, in other words, is that there is a connection between physical and mental strength and that most people, even though they may understand it at a basic level, don't really understand it on a deeper level.

One of the slightly deeper understandings is that if you are struggling with one of them (physical or mental) you can train the other and gain benefits in both, due to the nature of how connected they are.

An example of how they are connected in the negative sense - if you are lost in the desert and become really physically weak through lack of nourishment, it's also likely to affect your mental/emotional well-being and make you mentally weaker - you will have to fight for your life to maintain a positive attitude, particularly if like most people you are not practiced and trained in coping with this experience.

Likewise, if you are dealt a crushing blow in life and suffer from some form of depression, you are less likely to do the physical things that maintain physical health. A mentally well-balanced person is likely to train more often than someone who is clinically depressed.

To get this back on topic - if you are someone who regularly partakes in disciplined, beneficial, tough physical training and practices overcoming mental blocks encountered during that process, you are statistically more likely to outperform those who don't do this in a seemingly unconnected mentally-driven business environment.

That's one of the reasons we use 'link bait' trolling for the giant bass of Internet Marketers.

You need to have the right bait, the proper 'set the hook' technique, and the correct timing to land that moster bass, or your next ntework marketing leader.

And don't forget, you still have to work for it. Just because that gigantic fish is on your hook doesn't mean it won't spit it out the second it sees something better to bite.

I'm more of a trout and walleye fisherman myself, though I haven't been fishing in a couple of years. It might be time to dust of the tackle box and see what other techniques I can use.
