How do you get your commissions on big ticket physical products with 1-800 numbers?

I've got a website for a physical product that is getting a lot of traffic. The problem is all models sell for thousands of dollars, and any site that sells them has a 1-800 number on their site - I've talked with at least one supplier who says that customers always come to her by phone call and she has no way to track that. Another affiliate manager wouldn't even respond to my inquries about the issue.

I think selling over the phone is the norm in the industry, but no affiliate programs have a system in place to track that, so how can I monetize the traffic? The one lady I spoke to said we could work something out creative when I suggested having a special coupon on my site that gives 5% off, but I don't think that will be that memorable and a lot of prospects might forget it.

After all, $150 off of a $3000 product would probably be likely to slip your mind during the buying process. Or would it?

Can anyone give some advice on this?

    Some performance marketing setups give each affiliate a dedicated phone number to call, the merchant must be willing to setup the infrastructure. Commission Junction had been pushing a phone affiliate program you might look into.

    There's another post talking about the CJ ringRevenue program and a training course on phone affiliate sales.

    A couple ways:

    1) Instead of worrying about discounting, think upsell. Package something awesome to go with the deal, then have people send a copy of their receipts to you to get it. Then you have proof and can go after funds with your receipts in hand.

    2) Contact the seller and set up a Paydotcom (or other) affiliate program between yourselves. Then both of you have access to the stats, and you can place the affiliate links on your site.

    What I have setup is my own processing through big ticket websites.

    So I actually have my own # on the site, I have someone take the calls and answer the questions.

    Upon interested in ordering we take their information over the phone and punch it directly to the affiliate website.

  • Hey LMC - So is this a setup the affiliate program already has set up, or do you pay for the 1-800 number through one of those call centers that just field the calls for you? How does the affiliate track the referral once you send the call over to them? I imagine they've just got a system for that?
