Anyone Here Making Money Giving Away Free eBooks?

I wanted to know if anyone here has had a profitable success with posting a free ebook on ebook directory sites, forums, etc.?

I'm trying to generate trafic to my website and was thinking of using a free ebook as a way to do this.

Any help on this subject would be great.

    In the IM niche, it used to work in the early days. Not anymore. There are too many of such ebooks.

    However, if you have a niche (like I do) where there are not too many marketers using the technique, it sure can work. You ebook can spread like wildfire in no time.

    I'd imagine you'd make more money taking PLR ebooks and converting them to Kindle, Nook and iPad formats for sale on those sites. Several years ago (I want to say 2007 maybe 2008) I converted some PLR products to eBook for sale on Amazon's site and I still get a little bit each month from it. Now that those ebook readers are so popular I can really see that taking off if you were to focus on high quality books and get good graphics made

      Seemingly, too many lazy marketers knew about this because the same PLR and PD stuff started to appear zillion times posted by as many "marketers".

      The last news was that Amazon, for example, is getting rid of such "products".

        I don't doubt that Amazon would get rid of those that don't make any changes. You'd have better success tweaking the content a bit, adding a chapter or so of your own and new ecover in order for it to get posted.

        For example I could see a product on "Marketing Your Business Online for Realtors" Accountants, Doctors etc... it's basically the same book but you make a few tweaks to it and the odds of it getting approved will go up

    Well since your main objective is to get traffic I believe you would be better off going after methods that could be more lucrative.

    For Example:

    Article Marketing
    Forum Posting On Related Forums (No SPAM)
    Video Marketing
    SEOing your website
    etc

    All these methods are proven to drive targeted traffic when done right!

    I did this in a niche where most folks don't give away free ebooks. It actually got reviewed by a few print magazines in the niche. It got my name out there and demonstrated my understanding of the subject, but it didn't really make me a lot of money.

    If I had to do it again, I would still do the free book ,but I woudn't give away the farm as I did in that one...

      What learned here in this forum was this approach: give them a free book that teaches the "WHAT" (e.g. can they do, can they achieve etc.) - and then sell them the "HOW"
