HELP! YouTube Channel Newb

Hey, Everyone...

My son and I recently set up a YouTube channel to do some Commentary Videos on video games. - The hook is, I really suck, and we hope people think it's funny seeing me get waxed.

Anyway, I'm anxious to build a fanbase, but I'm a total newb at this type of marketing. I'm more than willing to spend a few bucks to get going, but I really need some direction. I see plenty of people here sell YouTube services, but I honestly don't know which ones are best for my situation, and I don't want to screw up and get my channel banned or something.

If anyone can point me in the direction of someone who has a good reputation for getting channels like mine going safely, I would really appreciate it!

If I did it right, my channel link will be in my signature if anyone is interested.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
-Curtis-

I advice that you go through all the pains of manually building your subscriber base through conventional means. You must learn through the process, so you may be able to grasp the trade. Would you do a business which you know nothing? Try to learn first, and from there you'll realize what you'll really need. Believe me, it'll avoid you spending a lot of money and you'll enjoy what you're doing. Just my 2cents.

Thanks for the advice, guys. -- netPH, I just may just do that, although I would enjoy hearing any other ideas if anyone has some to offer.

I disagree. First of all, this thread is obviously for this Warrior who is looking for help. To say struggle "through all the pains" is ridiculous!

"Work smart, not hard" is my motto. A true professional understands that their time is money. Why waste 100's of hours trying to figure out something equaling $1,000's of dollars of your time, when for a few measly bucks you can find a Warrior For Hire on here or go to Fiverr for some gigs.

I would rather have the programmers handle the FTP, HTP, HTML and coding for my websites than for me to spend 100's of pain-staking hours to learn all of his. While I can design my website, promote affiliate programs, and put my time into making money.

A wise Warrior will seek out advice and use the help of those who knows what the heck they're doing.

      Peace.

I totally agree with NetPH, you have to learn the process first & do it yourself. then once you understand how it is done, you can then hire someone for future projects. I know it sounds painful but it's worth it in the end to do a little research & figure it out. I do also recommend fiverr.com, make sure they have lot's of positive reviews. Hope this helps, I know it's pretty scary when you first start, but before you know it you'll be an expert!!! Also, this forum is great when you get stuck, we're here to help.

      Again, thanks so much, everyone!

Yes, Kitt, this forum seems to be extremely friendly and accommodating. A newb like me truly appreciates that! I checked out Fiverr on Jay's advice, and you guys are right; seems there are some great promoters there. I will definitely be looking into the high reputation ones.

Thanks, everybody, for all the advice and for being patient with a beginner.

      Cheers,
      -Curtis-

    wow..

how young are u may i ask?

u said ur son and you were doing video games commentary. are they review or somehting like that?

because in the gaming niche usually those who do reviews and critics are young if not mostly are male.

unless u are a super hard core gamer which people can see from ur skill in playing games.

usually they fraps their game while they play and do the commentary later as an add on into the video and combine together.

    i am a gamer myself.

so honestly, with no offence, when i see reviews and critics, i dont go for ..... hmmm lets just say ur image is important.

if its just a voice thing then get ur son to do the voice, hearing a female voice in a game can make alot of difference in terms of conversion.

thats my take on gaming niche.

    all the best!

I have to agree that you should learn the ropes, at least in the initial stages and not look to hard for easy answers. Better to know how to play some chords than get caught lip-syncing. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be seeking advice from experienced people either when practical.

Newbiee - yes, image is important, but the last time I checked the stats the average gamer age was about 35, that's not that young. It's been a while since I checked the stats, but I recall that average age rising too. My point is that there's lots of room for different demographics and POVs in gaming culture. Curtis may have a great angle here because there's probably a lot of dads out there wondering how they might be able to connect with their kids via gaming. Speaking as a former competitive gamer and old man I can only advise dads to find a good co-op game where they can let their kids teach them the tricks -- that's more bonding then getting your butt repeatedly handed to you by a 12 year old.

In fact, I write reviews myself...you are as young as you feel and as relevant as you make the effort to be.

    Regards,
    jim

I have built a fairly successful YouTube channel the old fashioned way.

Step by step. Inch by inch. It takes work.

I have about 500 followers and about 450 friends. I get followers and friend requests all the time. I have never paid for traffic or friends. I am not saying it does not work...but I have gotten all of my video views from natural search.

One of my videos has over 1/2 million views. And it is a dumb video of just my stomach and my hands.

    Here is my advice:

The very first thing you should do is to put a "subscribe to my channel link" in all of your videos. You can embed that from the tools that YouTube provides.

I see very few marketers taking advantage of this...

    Next:

    1) Set up a twitter account and link it to your videos.
    2) Set up a face book page and link it to your videos.
    3) Start following people who are into your niche. They will reciprocate.
    4) Everytime you post a video, post it to twitter and facebook with comments.
Now that you have linked your twitter account and facebook account, you can do that with the click of a button.
    5) Put your YouTube Badge and twitter bage on your your blog and website.
    6) Set up a blogger account, squidoo lens, weebly web page. (These are all free). Don't use the exact same content on each one. You can inter link them to your YouTube channel.
    7) Put some unique content and articles on each one. Embed your YouTube videos on all of your web properties.
    8) If your videos are how to and or popular you can apply to the Google Partner program and monetize your videos with adsense.
(This a stupidly simply way to monetize all of your videos)
    9) Comment on other videos in your niche on YouYube. Comment on other videos that you like. Spread the word about your channel with your comments. You can also comment on there YouTube channel pages. All of your comments will give you a link back to your site...
    10) Offer advice and feedback when you comment. Always be positive.
    11) Write some articles and submit them to ezine articles. Link the articles to your YouTube Channel
    12) Follow the TOS of YouTube. Don't try to play tricks or games. If you want your channel to be on YouTube for the long haul, you need to play be their rules...

Make friends and be a friend on YouTube.

Comment on other peoples videos regularly...this will give your channel lots of juice! Always, always be positive...

Your hard work will definitely payoff!

^^^ Doing all of the above is a good idea too.

I'd honestly stay away from Fiverr though until you figure out exactly what you want to do.

What is your objective? Just start a channel and get views? What are your goals?

I can help give advice but only if I know what you're trying to do. Setting up a YouTube account and channel is easy, being successful can be tricky though.

If you're using YouTube for traffic that's one goal, if you're trying to go viral and build an established channel--that's something else entirely.

Either way, I'd strongly discourage you from trying to create a "brand" or "business" with just a YouTube channel. YouTube has shown time and time again they have no problems deleting accounts + channels, so it's not a good long term plan.

That being said, having a successful channel that compliments an equally good website + brand IS a good idea.

Great point Andrew! Using multiple channels is key, but you need to have a hub for all those spokes and that hub should be your site/blog.

If you want to get a good head start on this to get more views you might want to check out this WSO I bought last night. It's called Social Media Exposure. It has a lot of functions but one of those functions is that it can get you youtube video views. It relies on exchanging video views among other users by automating views on site like youlikehits, welikehits, etc. If you don't want to buy the software you can do this manually by signing up for those type of sites. I'm sure there are other types of software out there too.

    Hi Curtis,

Nice looking channel! I liked how you customized your background, it gives it a good touch. This alone will help you avoid being flagged by YouTube.

As far as building your account goes you can always search out for other channels that are similar to yours and comment on their channel to build relevant backlinks. Using SEO Quake (a firefox plugin) you can see the Page Rank of the channel. You will want to build backlinks on high PR channels that are relevent.

Also subscribing to their channels and submitting a friend request will we a good idea to
build up the authority in your channel.

There are plenty of fiverr gigs you can purchase to get more subscribers, comments, and likes to you videos and channel. Just make sure that it looks very natural to YouTube so that you avoid being flagged.

A free tool that I use for views is called viewet.com, you might want to look into this as well.

    I hope this helps!

    All the best,

    Paul

Thanks very much for all the great comments and advice, everyone!

As you can see, I posted this back in June, and largely following the advice here, our channel was partnered back in August... We now have over 1800 subscribers and growing. :-)

As far as promotion, I used YouTube Promoted videos, and fortunately, a good number of those views turned into subscribers. The advice I got here was very solid; work hard on doing things the basic, right way and let the pieces come together.

Pretty much all I've done over these past months - along with making vids for the channel - is study YouTube marketing. Learning what the important ingredients are for getting my videos favorable positions within YouTube's search was huge in helping us get seen as "similar videos" and other YouTube operations that increase exposure.

This is truly a great, supportive community and I appreciate all the advice you guys have given - and continue to give!
