Does google really rank sites properly?

I built 2 blogs about a year ago. They both have very similar domain names, that have the exact keyword in them, and are both selling a clickbank product on the same subject, and the competition level is almost the same. They are also both built on the flexsqueeze template.

I made them the way I make all my sites, with t1,2,and 3, proper keyword density, ect. One site went to position one, page one within a few weeks, and has been there for eight month. The other site never made it past position 70, no matter what I did to help it.

I build three amazon sites a few months ago, all product review templates, with everything else the same. One site soared to position one, and hasn't moved in two months, and the other two are lost in space.

I have several other cases like this, and I have gone over them with a fine tooth comb, looking for the answer, but there doesn't seem to be one. I really wonder about google's algorithms accuracy.

Everybody has stories like this, yet nobody has the answers. Google does seem to place sites in a rather arbitrary fashion sometimes...
