Do You Really Know Who You are Doing Business With Here?

A picture, a name and a sig file is all you need to become anybody you want to be on the Warrior Forum (or many other places online).

A cautionary tale that fooled the world's media

    Martin,

Given the context, I can understand why someone
would want to hide their real identity.

However, you are right... it's very easy to set up an
"entity" here on the forum. It's virtually impossible to
be sure of anyone's real identity unless you've met
    them in person offline.

For example I can confirm that Robert Puddy does
indeed have a face for radio. ;-)

        I second that.

I even got turned down for radio because of my face. The sound engineers didn't want to have to look at it.

So I work alone, on the internet, with no mirrors. I once saw my own reflection in the monitor and had to take a few days off.

Funny you should mention this now.

I just had to explain to someone whose offer had been closed why it's suspicious when someone posts "Just ordered" and then follows up later with a killer testimonial when both posts are from the same IP as the seller.

In that case, both user accounts had avatars of buxom women with European features. The IP addresses were all from India.

The avatar part isn't, although I'd wager those pics aren't being used with proper authorization. The deception in the postings is, but it'd be hard to conclusively prove they weren't different people using wifi somewhere.

I think I'd rather get burnt a couple of times than never trust someone, even online. A bit of common sense can usually weed out the dodgy ones.

      Hi Troy,

No, you aren't naive, IMO. You are just representing a sensible behavior - which I also follow. I remember only 2 - 3 occasion when I gained negative experience. You just need to be circumspect enough.

Anyway, if nobody would trust in others online, major industries have already been destroyed.

      Best,

Not naive at all. That's just a nice dose of common sense. If I never trusted anyone online (or offline), I would never have outsourced 75% of my business, nor would I have struck the business relationships I have now. And I still feel that way even though I've been burned quite a bit, though less now since I'm a bit wiser in what to look for and spend more time doing my research (and I always get everything in writing).

Not trusting anyone 100% simply isn't smart business sense. It's fine to be cautious, but being overly cautious or paranoid will close a lot of doors.

Lastly, I'm not Rod at all, I'm really Charlie Sheen and I've only got one speed: GOOOOO!

That's one of the places most of the "SEO" spammers work from.

The Philippines, Pakistan, Malaysia and India are the worst. India is by far the most common home to the offenders in that industry. It's the only one of those where the company itself is commonly in the same country as the people making the posts.

If it's any consolation, posters from the Philippines aren't as obvious, as their English-language skills are generally superior to the SEO spammers from other countries.

This isn't meant as a shot against the majority of the people from those countries, who tend to be productive members of the group. It's just where the cost of labor is low enough that the price/benefit ratio can work for the people employing these sorts of services.

I would never have been able to make my living online for the past 12 years if I didn't trust people online. I've been burned a few times, but that's not the majority of my experience in doing business with people that I don't know.

I've been burned just as badly by people that I've known personally, or thought I knew.

I'm not saying don't be careful and please ... due diligence is required for online transactions, especially when a lot of money is involved, but there are times when I'm considering doing business with someone as in hiring them or being hired by them, that I have to sometimes take a leap of faith. If you can't do that, it could seriously affect your ability to do business online.

I have taken up services from a few Warriors and I will say I have been a little disappointed. Their customer support has been lacking and their delivery time way late. Slow to respond to emails and PM's. But with that said, there are a lot of "good" people out there who still believe in "over deliverying". You find out who the "good" guys are real fast if you spend some time in the forum

People need to stop with these kind of things and just be humble and do business right if you are hiding who you are you should not be trying to do business with anyone they should just leave those who are real and have nothing to hid to keep doing and just stay away they are making it bad for people who are honest.
