How to backup all of my sites to my HD

Hi

I want to backup my server once weekly but be able to download it to my for safer keeping.

Basically I want to have my own offline backup which sits on my HDD connected to my PC.

My website is large, although bandwith is not a problem, I can obviously only compress the files to a small amount. Is there any easy way of doing this so I can download the whole server/site to my PC in one go and leave it run over night?

Cpanel has a full backup option I believe but I've only ever used that on shared hosting - it automatically saves them as a gzip

mine were never too big though, half a gig at most. The limitation is that it saves it to the root so you need to download it (and have enough extra space to accommodate the backup)

Also, I'm not sure if it backs up databases, I always backed those up separately

not sure if that's any help. good luck!

My site is nearly 100gb and growing in size. Unfortunately this is not sufficient

In that case, contact your web host and they can do it on site - for a fee: standard rate for the tech plus the cost of the HD, shipping and handling.

Crunch the numbers and you'll immediately see this is a waste of time and bandwidth to attempt over the Internet - even with the best high-speed connection. In fact, there's probably something in the TOS against this - under penalty of them relieving you of your birthday or some such.

The techs can tap into their server with an 100MB ethernet, hit the magic 'Go' button, take a coffee break, and when they get back it's done!

AFAIK they automatically format the new HD in whatever format your hosting, so that's one thing you may want to verify or change when you place the order.

100Gb? Hmm, that seems quite large.

Are you running automated scripts to clean up redundant data/storage every day?

I own a PLR website so its due to the large files I upload on a daily basis.

I am now using webby cart which uses an rsync system which backups up my data daily. It seems to be doing the job and its only 15USD for 120GB.

You might want to set up another hosting account. Can be the same company as long as it is on a different server and using something like crossFTP which will transfer your backup directly server to server.

CrossFTP / Knowledgebase / What is FXP (Site to Site) transfer?

or you could do it yourself if you are comfortable in linux and have shell access to the server. This is basically the method most hosting companies use when offering to move your current site to their hosting if you sign up.

You could probably use cronjobs to backup and transfer your files automatically.

Your host should be able to do an automatic back up every night but realize that it will double your storage or more each day until they dump the previous days back up...You'll get a false storage warning..

I dont want a backup by my host as the data would be in the same data storage place. The idea is to get an offsite backup.

      The benefits.

      Well imagine this.

You have a profitable website which is hosted in a building. The host backs up your files in the same building! Pretty pointless, if that building was to burn etc your files would all be lost. That is why you should always have an offsite backup of important sites.

Bandwith is used each time your website is loaded.

I would create a ticket with your hosting support and ask them directly if there is an offsite service that can backup your web data automatically. They probably have services capable of doing this already. I would ask for the location to verify it is offsite.

Copying the data to your own hd would be a nightmare with multiple domains, mysql databases, etc.

leave overnight the PC on transferring files through filezilla
This would be the cheapest idea.
    Hope this helps
