How healthy are you since starting IM...

What do you eat and drink when sat behind your computer for hours on end, how much exercise do you take?

Varient on this question was asked in a previous thread, but rather than hijack it, I thought I'd ask it again but with a different slant...

As a nurse, I have atrocious eating habits anyway, so spending the last five years sat on my ass for hours at a time eating sandwiches and snacks and sleeping four hours a night etc has not been conducive to good health.

I've found my weight soar, and I've developed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma and diabetes. (those bad eating habits over the years obviously played their part as well).

I'm 50 years old, 50 is supposed to be the new 40 and I should be in the prime of my life. Instead I'm taking a fistful of pills every day and frantically trying to get my life back. (This girlie got a wakeup call with a vengeance).

So how did I get to this point, how did I get from someone who owned their own horses, and had the obvious amount of exercise it takes to look after them, to someone who closely resembles their mother in 3 short years. (I've been ill for 2 of those 5 years).

It's simple and I've already outlined above what caused the problem. I went from being relatively fit and well to a wreck within 3 years simply because I didn't look after my health. My business was booming, but I sure wasn't!

So how can you avoid being where I am today, and I'll warn you, if you recognise the pattern, you'll get there eventually, (maybe just not as quick as me).

For a start, check your diet

Throw away the fizzy drinks (even the low calorie ones). They contain citric acid and it interferes with weight loss if you're trying to lose. Sip at a bottle of water instead whilst your sat at your computer.

Cut the caffeine down as low as you can.

Eat plenty of salads, veg and fruit, snack on fruit and veg instead of crisps, etc.

Watch your salt intake

Don't eat too much processed food

Make sure you get at least (and this is at least), half an hours exercise every day. It will not only help keep the pounds off, it will also revitalise your mind.

Take it from someone who has been there. I'm now frantically trying to combat the effects of neglecting my health over the last few years whilst I was building my IM business.

I'm getting there, but it's a slow process, I watch my diet now, I've cut down on the junk and I've joined the gym,

I can definately see improvements. My daughter has turned into Attilla the hun, she checks my fridge every day to see if I'm cheating. She also joined the gym with me to give me an incentive to go on a regular basis.

As I said, I'm getting there, I've lost some weight, the wheezing has stopped and my blood sugars have stabilised. I'm also sleeping more.

Believe it or not, I've also started watching more TV.

I rarely watch TV, my reasoning is, it's time I can spend on my business. I've come to realise it's fine to watch my favourite shows and now I don't feel guilty if I turn it on. (I do pre-record them tho so I can miss the adverts lol)

Best of all, I'm finding I'm more focussed on my IM business, I'm not so tired all the time, my brain is much sharper.

Getting to the stage (as I did), when your doctor tells you that you're at as much risk as someone who has had a major heart attack and stroke is dammed sobering.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, no point in having lots of money if you're too dead to spend it

I'm now going to get ready to go to the gym

    Hi Kymi,

Great post to wake us up on the importance of exercise.

I do become fitter because of IM, I developed the winner's mindset which include spiritual, mental, and physical discipline.

I am fitter now in the sense I work out 3 times a week and swim once a week.

And because of having allocated time to exercise, I can think better and sometimes, great idea struck while spending time along. =)

    My 2 cents,
    John

    • I was actually fairly unhealthy when I started IM. Although I did slip, diet-wise, earlier in this year, I'm back on track with losing fat.

As for exercise, I'm a little better at getting up from the chair and moving around. Trust me, if you've let yourself go and you're over 50, you don't snap back like when you were younger!

Monitor Man -- ha ha. I love it. When I head out in running tights (in cooler months) I love to pretend I'm a superhero, who slaves by day in a geeky drone of a job, but whose true self emerges now and then to do great things. I'll confess to once in a while muttering under my breath, "I am a Superhero. I am Programming Woman. I am a Superhero." -- As Aegon and others have mentionned, the trick is really becoming a goal-oriented person with the mindset for success.

As for the scout dude. Awesome buddy. Both for the better fitness and for doing stuff with your kids. Speaking of which, I have a tour permit that I better get done.

I have become alot more healthier since getting into IM and online business opportunites etc

It has led me to learn from some great people, for instance, a few months ago i was watching some video from Eben Pagen (A Great Info Product Marketer) and he was just giving some information about what he does behind his $20 million dollar per year info marketing business, and he mentions what helps him to be successful and for instance he talks about eating a healthy meal in the morning and doing 30 mins of excercise and reading some inspiring books for 30 mins or so in the morning before you get to work also some meditation stuff he goes on all about it - well i adopted some of these ideas and ive seen massive improvement in myself over the last few months.

It can be very easy to just sit at your computer all day eating junk and drinking cola or coffee. Carry on like this and you'll soon fall victim.

I go to the gym 4 times a week and don't eat anything with sugar in it.

The odd bit of caffeine is fine as long as it's a sugar free product. Helps with the concentration but you don't get the sugar crash a little later.

Make time to exercise as it will make you feel so much better. It's a proven fact that if you do some excersise during the day you'll be more productive during the working week!!

Well, I exercise cardiovascularly and aerobically for oh, 15 minutes a day probably. Not much, but I feel good, I appear to be in good shape.

Most of my health is from my diet. Lots of fruit, lots of juice, no unhealthy foods as long as I'm not as risk of starving.

Make sure you treat yourself once in a while.

Look forward to that favourite junk food once a fortnight and eat healthy at all other times.

This way you've got something to look forward to and you cut down the risk of a binge eat.

            Hello Kimi
Very wise words "lets all get fit" I must admit sitting down all day and eating snack food is not the way to go.

I started a better eating plan two weeks ago but must confess that I stray off course to the biscuit jar some days.

This country is getting worse for obesity and I hear on the news that parents who allow there children to become obese run the risk of having their children taken away into care.

Thanks for the reminder of keeping fit, I will take the dog for a walk as soon as I send this reply.

        Great post Kim.

I try to swim 20-30 lengths (short pool!) every day (Mon to Fri) and I *always* feel revitilized when I get back to the office.

If I go through a spell of NOT doing it, I really notice the difference. I find it to be beneficial both physically *and* mentally in equal measure.

          Good point Kymi

Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy business. They all go hand in hand.
When planning a business it really is important to factor in the management
of your health. Give yourself permission to exercise, the benefits will
ultimately positively affect your 'bottom line' (in both meanings of the
          phrase!)

It's great to see that a lot of the replies so far have been from Warriors under
          30. If you keep up those good habits then you'll really reap the rewards
further down the line. As has been noted, the older you get the harder it is to
          regain lost fitness.

I was incredibly unhealthy before I started IM - I worked as a teacher and lived on sandwiches and coffee. I was highly stressed, never had time for any exercise and suffered from severe insomnia.

Fast forward to today - IM has given me so much more time for myself. First thing every morning (after checking my emails and stats of course) I head off to the gym. I do IM in the middle of the day and I usually do some exercise in the evening as well - even if it's just going for a walk. I also eat really healthily now - I've cut out dairy, wheat and sugar (except for the odd treat) and I'm feeling healthier than ever.

It's no coincidence that some of the most successful business owners online lead healthy lifestyles...mentally AND physically

Mike Geary (sells over 10k of his own books on Clickbank per month)
Mike is a fitness guru and says that he got to where he was from
reading self growth books, and his fitness must play a strong part in
                    his mental energy too

Eben Pagen, as mentioned already sticks to a similar regime

Frank Kern, he aint outta shape with his surfing and other wild
                    side sports...

I could go on all day listing successful people and the books they read
and the food they eat. Success is clearly congruent with a healthy
diet and positive mental attitude (which are both mutually exclusive).

My vice is caffeine, it's time to try and kick it to the curb me thinks.

Before, I was in a few high-stress positions. In construction, it was always deadlines and me losing big gobs of cash if anything went wrong. After that, I did a stint here as a teacher and had stress because of my drive to be the best.

Now, my blood pressure is very low. I feel great. My body weight is normal (I was actually underweight in construction). So, I'd say IM has been great for my health.

                        Hi Kim,

Great tips... when I first started being a full time internet marketer I was on a mission as it was just a few months before my wedding so I was at the gym four or five times a week and eating really healthily.

As soon as I got back from the honeymoon I became a bit of a slob. Because I was working from home all the time and not speaking to other people constantly it became more of an effort to walk about as much and the Italian pattisserie was too close for me to avoid temptation.

I am back on track now though... working from home means you can go to the gym during the day when it is nice and quiet, so I am back there, and I am also making the effort to get out and go for a walk every day as well (difficult when you live in rainy Scotland). I'm also doing Yoga in between my work and not putting unhealthy food in the fridge!

                        Cheers,

In some ways I am healthier now than before, but that is down to moving from London to Turkey.

                            The two most important things

                            1. I eat very few processed foods (almost nothing out of a tin).

                            2. I eat with the seasons.

In London you are used to all fruit and veg being available all year round. Here, if it is not available at the local market we don't eat it.

If anybody has suffered from allergies, tiredness and generally feeling run down I can really recommend Olive Leaf Extract. The first 6 months of this year were a real write off health-wise. My mum sent me a couple of bottles of Olive Leaf extract and in three weeks I was feeling like a new person.

(Warning: results can vary from person to person. Please seek advice from a doctor before taking any alternative remedies).

Yep, the home gym is key for keeping in some kind of decent shape when you're too busy (or lazy) to get out of the house. I keep a set of free weights near my desk so I can take quick exercise breaks between doing some work. Keeps my blood flowing and helps me think better.

Overall, I'm probably healthier than when I did office work, but I eat a lot more junk snack food all day. It's nice being able to actually go out and exercise during the day instead of having to wait til the end of a long day at the office.

I lost 86 pounds 5 years ago and I've kept off so I make sure to exercise every day. And it doesn't have to be marathon work out. Just some sort of activity for 30 mts. I go to the gym 4-5 time per week. Spend about an hour working out. I like going to the gym because it gets me out of the house and from behind the computer.

I also walk my dogs in the morning and in the afternoon. They're little dogs so 15-30 minutes walk is all they can handle.

I drink a lot of water when I'm on the computer. I also drink diet coke. I don't tend to snack all day while I'm working. And I make sure I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also make sure not to wait until I'm starving before I eat (at that juncture is when you tend to overeat).

I don't really follow any diet but I do try to eat healthy. That doesn't mean I eat tofu. But if I have fries I'll order a buffalo burger which has less fat. I'm not a calorie counter but I do watch the amount of sugar and fat in the food I eat. The first thing I cut off was fast food. It's garbage. I haven't stepped inside McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. in five years. I didn't give up that food. If I want a taco or burrito I'll go to a place where at least the meat isn't processed tripe like in Taco Bell. So I'll eat at Chipolte for example. Yes a lot of calories but if you burn those calories by exercising you'll be fine. So you don't have to cut out all the food you love.

It's pretty simple really...eat less...exercise more and you will loose weight and feel great. Trust me it's not that hard! I sat on my butt and ate and ate for years without exercising...well of course I got huge! Don't look at it like a diet but a lifestyle change.

      Kim - you old ratbag!

Here I was, enjoying a peanut butter sandwich, vegging out and seriously considering having an afternoon nap and you've gone and shamed me into feeling that I should go up to the gym for an hour.

That wasn't in my Sunday afternoon gameplan at all!

Mind you - doesn't watching team GB add four more golds to our tally count for at least half an hour of exercise? I can tell you it's certainly cardiovascular.

Damn you woman, I'm going to have to get on the running machine and lament the fact that the 100 meters is safe from me for another year.

Not quite 50 yet but getting closer...

The thing is I have exactly the same issues going on as you have Kim. For me it was the high stress, high workload, long hours, not eating right teaching job that did for me. Too many 14 hour days at the college and bringing work home. I gave up the job in March and following numerous tests at the doctors and the hospital plus a consultant endocrinologist the sum total is that they don't think there is anything wrong with me at all that a diet, some pills for blood pressure and cholesterol will not sort out.

Well they are wrong, I have been feeling terrible for 2 years now. My own research shows that I have a combination of adrenal fatigue and other hormonal issues going on. It only needs one hormone such as noradrenaline to go out of whack to bring the whole lot cascading down. But, I am now getting better. I eat regular nutritious meals. I no longer drink coffee, tea or cola drinks. I take a cocktail of vitamins every day, several times. I take time out from working to go out or to just watch TV. I no longer need an afternoon nap as I am getting my cortisol levels stabilised.

It needed me to find out the information myself to see what I needed to do. Don't burn out like I did everybody, it takes a long time for the body to heal from that and becomes more difficult the older you become.

I gained 40 pounds since starting with IM.
I just recently started working out again...kickboxing everyday.

Having a online job means sitting behind the computer for hours a day.
I spend about 16 hours a day behind my computer...easily.
But im trying to eat right and do all that healthy stuff.

    Hey Kim,

Let me say out the outset that I'm not a medical doctor and that
anything I say here is purely from my own experience. You need
to visit your doctor and get his advice - don't just act on what
I'm sharing with you without proper medical supervision....

Also, this is not meant to frighten anyone but rather to encourage
you to take action, because as human beings we always say - THIS
    WON"T HAPPEN TO ME!!!!

I had 2 of the problems that you describe:
    - high cholestrol
    - glucose intolerance (points short of full-blown diabetes 2)

Now let's talk about the pointers:
    - smoking
    - obesity
    - family history of heart disease
    - high cholestrol (familial)
    - sedenatry life style
    - high blood pressure
    - stress (the silent killer)
    - poor eating habits
    - diabetes (fastest growing disease in the western world)
    - depression

Another tell tale sign is obesity. If, when standing upright,
you can't see your toes by glancing down without moving your
head - you are considered to be obese. Especially us guys with
that dangerous roll of fat around the middle.

If you battle with one or more of the above issues YOU ARE AT
RISK, particularly if you live in a population group that is
statiscally prone to higher coronary heart disease probabilities.

You have to get help fast:
    - see your mediacl doctor
    - check your cholestrol HDL & LDL
    - check your homocysteine levels
    - check your blood sugars
    - test your blood pressure

    Act now!!!!

Studies done as late as last year, indicate that children as
young as 5 have found to have cholestrol build up in their arteries!!!!

From a diet perspective thsi isn't a diet per se, it's a LIFESTYLE
change. You have to radically change what you do:

    - eat low GI diet
    - exercise 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes each time
    - stop eating sugar (try xylitol NOT aspartame)
    - cut down on salt intake
    - stop eating saturated and trans fats
    - take aspirin daily (check with your doctor - don't say I didn't
    tell you)

Have a look at these sites:
3D Health Animations - Diseases and Conditions - Coronary Bypass Surgery
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (Heart Bypass Surgery, CABG) Information on MedicineNet.com
MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia:Heart bypass surgery - series: Normal anatomy

Again, I'm not a medical doctor so go and see yours if you suspect
that you suffer from any of these problems.

    I hope this helps someone....

If you take action you can save your life....(bit melodramatic
    but true)

    Regards

    Greg

Well as you can see in my sig file, I've become very overweight but healthy as a horse on paper.

Still, I'm on a journey to lose the weight - I have a large dent in my couch where I work. I must remember to get up a move more. With my DNS mobile version I think I might be able to work more on the go.

Please check this link about calorie restriction.

Dr. Oz (in the Oprah Show) talked about this topic before. I think he endorses it too.

Anyway, I'm using this method, and it works perfectly for me.

            Great post Kim.

Success definitely does not come in just wealth for me. Being truly successful consists of being strong in areas such as wealth, health, spirit, and mindset. With that being said I have become even more fit than before after starting IM. I mean once success starts coming in from one angle it motivates you to complete the puzzle. I work out at the gym 3 times a week and 30-1hr of cardio everyday. I find working out refreshing and fun and makes you feel great after..

Do have to start watching what I eat though.....

The only thing about those weight loss blogs is that it puts more pressure on the process since you might feel you're letting your readers down. Keeping a weight loss journal is fine. I did when I lost my 80+ pounds but I didn't make it public. It was for me.

Please don't get me wrong. If it works for you fantastic. But it just my might more pressure you don't need to deal with as you're making the lifestyle change.

I think the 'pressure' in weight loss program is unnatural. People will get the yo-yo effects. They could gain back everything they lose, and even more.

Btw, don't assume that exercise can definitely cut down the weight. It's not totally true. We still need exercise, but not much. Anyway, I'm a believer of Dr. Oz's latest book.

My mentor(not IM mentor but life mentor) once told me that maintaining an equal balance was very important in general happiness. I believe his ratio was 30% family, 30% work, and finally, 30% YOU time.

Now I know that most internet marketers can't come close to balancing this like the way he described to me but I can affirm from an overall "health and well being" perspective, he is dead on.

And once I had the "I got it" moment, I was able to fit back in my daily weight training and my life with my wife greatly improved. And oddly enough, my online business picked up as well although I had to learn some serious time management in the process.

Excellent post Kim! There was a time when I used to sit in front of my computer for 5, 8, sometimes 12 hours straight and only getting up to go to the bathroom, eat, or answer the phone. I also used to drink copius amounts of coffee, Full Throttle, and Low-Carb Monster (man I was addicted to that stuff).....but a few months ago I developed some serious chest pain, dizziness, and had a rapid heart beat. Off I went to the emergency room.

After the EKG, blood work, a stress test, a Cat Scan (I was having headaches too), the results were inconclusive. Three emergency room doctors, 2 Cardiologists, and 1 GI Specialtist later, I found out that my heart, liver, and kidneys were in "spectacular" health, which is what one doctor told me. But my esophagus would spasm and I had "severe" acid reflux.

So I eliminated anything with caffeine, alcohol, ate more veggies, brown rice, non-fat yogurt......I changed my whole diet (thanx partially to Kevin Riley too). For breakfast I usually have oatmeal or grits (not fried) with a banana, an apple, or strawberries with a touch of organic honey.

Today I eat better, I exercise a lot, and I take frequent breaks through out my day. I take more vacations and spend more time with friends and family. I know Chris Sutton will be shocked, but I'm keeping it to dating one woman at a time now.....lol.

In all seriousness, your post really struck a chord with me, because looking back I was burning the candle light at both ends, didn't eat all that great, didn't exercise enough, and it certainly had taken it's toll. And now I sleep better and feel like a million bucks! I find that though I work less now, I'm getting more done.

So maybe there is something to eating better and getting your 30 minutes of exercise 3 to 4 times a week.

I've never been hospitalized since birth. I worked as a technical support in a shifting schedule for almost 20 years, I've never been hospitalized. I discovered IM late 2006 and for 2 years now I am a full time IM'er. I was hospitalized last July 2008 for gastroenteritis, my first time. Forgot to eat on time when working in front of my laptop. Even before, I do not drink coffee, eat junk foods and unhelathy foods. I am very concious with what I eat, (because I want to maintain a good figure) but the problem now is that I forgot to eat and sometimes do not have the appetite. Now It is a concious effort not to forget eating..always have something to eat beside me. Biscuits, apple, banana, etc.

Sadly, my weight has gone up, but know what I need to do.

The good news is that my stress level is way (no pun intended) down.

I recently went to the doctor for what could still be a very serious condition. The thing is that my blood pressure has always been on the high end. And being at the doctor for this reason was making me incredibly nervous. However, my blood pressure was about as healthy as it can get.

Stress can wreak havoc on all of our bodily systems and I am glad I don't work for a boss. Sometimes I have to work harder than I did at the j-o-b, but it never stresses me out.

I've always had a major sweet tooth, and don't see how I can give that up, nor do I really care to. Still trying to add healthier foods to my diet, though.

Now, I just need to get up, and get moving.

              ~Michael

Fruit are mostly carbs in the form of fructose. They are low GI and not usually anything to worry about, especially considering all the good aspects of fruit -- like vitamins etc.

It's different to sucrose (e.g. table sugar) which is high GI and generally bad for your body.

                    Get a dog!

I go for a walk with Muffin at least twice a day, as well
as getting lots of regular excercise, I also get time to
                    relax and think.

                    Hi Kyle

I was told by my dietician that making fruit smoothies was one of the worst things I could do especially for my diabetes. The sugar content is really high. (I was making a lot so I could take my fruit all in one go daily).

I was buying bags of pure fruit just as JMo does in his vid, and I was mixing it with low fat natural yoghurt and unconcentrated juice so I thought I was doing everything right.

JMo vids rock, I watched that one all the way through. (Something I do rarely)

OMG John a Springer, we had one for 17 years (I adore them).

I'm desperate for a dog, and I want another springer, but hubby won't let me have one because we go away so much

Real reason is because he can't cope when they die.

                    Hey Kyle,

Not all fruits are created equal....especially from a diabetic
                    point of view....

                    Here are some examples:

The Glycemic Index of Some Foods Based on 100 = a Glucose Tablet.

                    FRUIT
                    strawberries 32
                    apple 38
                    orange 43
                    orange juice 49
                    banana 61

So if you pack a smoothie full of bananas you're asking for trouble.

                    Another example is potatoes:

                    POTATOES
                    sweet 50
                    yams 54
                    new 58
                    mashed 72
                    instant mashed 86
                    white 87

It's better to eat sweet or baby potatoes because their GI is
so much lower than large potatoes.

                    Regards

                    Greg

Your right Greg, definitely the wrong type of thing to make when you're a diabetic. same dietician nearly had heart failure when I told him how many banana's I was eating.

My vision was blurred and my blood suger was sky high, but once I stopped drinking them I was much better.

My daughter was encouraging my grandchildren to drink Innocent smoothies because she thought they were good for them. She was horrified when a study was done showing that they were really bad for their teeth due to the amount of sugar invoved.

It may be natural sugar, but it's still sugar

I'd love to find an alternative (I like smoothies)

True, not being a diabetic I don't tend to worry as much about it as others might have to.

I've got bags of frozen mixed berries that I use for my fruit smoothies, they're all on the low GI side. Bananas are a nice treat

                        Hey Kyle,

Those mixed berry smoothies are the best and you're right, they're
very low GI and they contain all the flavounoids and anti-oxidants
                        that are beneficial.....

I really enjoy fresh mango smoothies when they are in season.
Only trouble is I end up having too much....

                          Hi all,

All this talk of food - I have a thing at the moment for granary bread, and also fresh melon & pineapple...yum!

Moving away from food, but staying with 'health & IM', I moved house 18 months ago to be by the sea and also to challenge myself by making a fresh start in a new place, a long way from home and familiar people. But quite often, I forget to appreciate all that I have around me.

Yesterday, I was talking to a friend on the phone because I was getting a bit stressed with work and getting stir-crazy cabin fever from being in the home office too much. After our chat I decided to go to a place I hadn't been for three months, about 20 minutes walk away. It's a strange little village that has been preserved almost as it was a good few hundred years ago.

They also have large public grounds with tons of unusual, unkempt plantlife and wildlife and I used to go there a lot in the daytime because it is often deserted and one of the most peaceful places I have ever been to. Well it did me the world of good to go there yesterday (no electronic thingies, no noise, hardly any other humans - just plants, birds and fish jumping out of the pond to catch flies) and it has three different ponds on three different levels - so you can feed the ducks

I just came back from going there again for an hour. My point - there are many aspects to maintaining health when working in our industry and the more you know, the better. Already this thread has mentioned food, exercise - and now, finding your own 'peaceful place' to go and chill out - and the beauty of my job is that WHENEVER I feel the urge I just chuck on the shoes and go and chill with the ducks and moorhens.

It's not the Grand Canyon or anything spectacular like that, but I put a page of photos (that I just took) together to see if they can express what I have tried to with these words.

                            Hey Roger,

So true, you have to find a place to be quiet and let all the
                            stress just melt away....

Man, your description and your photos make me so envious and
you say that's just twenty minutes away....lucky fish....

I guess that's the problem when you live in big cities, you have
to go further to find those tranquil places. When I was growing
up, we had a park with a huge lake where we used to catch fish.
But it also had one pond that reminds me very much of the one
in your pictures...had a bench and a running stream and lots
of big fish....but we weren't allowed to fish there.

As they say - stress is the silent killer...so we have to actively
do stuff to reduce the stress.....

                            Great post....

                              Hi Greg,

I'm interested to see how this aspect of 'IM health' goes down with the more 'aggressive' side of the marketing community. I fully expect to be called a sissy/hippy whatever
Man, your description and your photos make me so envious and
you say that's just twenty minutes away....lucky fish....

to go further to find those tranquil places.
Well, as I said I only moved here 18 months ago and spent the previous 37 years in and around England's second biggest city - and it was a cold, grey, litter strewn mess.

And I was surprised to realise that many of the locals here don't appreciate what they've got. When we walk into town I force them to walk along the seafront - they would normally take the busy road route but I tell them 'you've got to breathe in the sea air, hear the seagulls, feel the sea-spray'. They think I'm nuts! But they haven't experienced inner city land-locked concrete-claustrophobia.

There are many advantages here - (my desk looks out over the sea, I live in a quiet part of town but am 15 minutes walk from one of the busiest seaside areas/hen party/stag night destinations in GB - best of both worlds ) - but the price I pay is that I either have to get out and meet new people by doing new stuff, or I end up totally isolated, talking to myself and going crazy by not being able to bounce ideas off others (and talking in forums too much).

Plus, I have to drive a lot to fetch my son down here for regular visits, but that also gives me the chance to go back and see what I'm not missing. And by not having old friends knocking my door all the time I've been able to experience total and utter freedom - in terms of time and what I do with it. It's a good experience, one I'd recommend for anyone who has the freedom to move and is feeling stale and restricted by living in the place where they grew up.

Sorry for the ramble, but I wanted to try and expand on the fact that I wasn't born with these things on my doorstep - I had to make sacrifices and go out and move closer to them. And I want others to know this in case they ever think of doing the same. It's a big world out there and as soon as I can I'll be on the move again - if you're not moving forward and challenging yourself, you get old quickly. No way, Jose!

                              Have laptop, will travel.

                              I'm on a roll now -

Now you're not playing fair Roger......those pics are awesome.

We see those kind of views when we take our main annual holiday
to a place called the Wilderness in the Cape. Also, still relatively
unspoilt, where you can still find an amazing amount of life
on the rocks - mussels, octopus, small rock cods and a vast array
                                of anemones, crabs etc

I hear what you're saying about "change". As they say a change
is as good as a holiday. And yet it's one of the most frightening
                                things for most human beings.

Most people want the right to demand change but what they don't
realise is that if you want change you have to become the change
                                first.

In fact, we're talking as a family about the possibility of emigrating
right now, partly brought on by the state of affairs in our country
but also about having more adventure....

Good on you for making the change and for finding your piece
of paradise. Hope you can make some new friends soon....

BTW are you a soccer supporter?

Seriously, Roger, it's wonderful to have beautiful natural surroundings. I used to think I was a city boy but now all I want is a house with garden near the sea.

My brother moved to Perth 20 years ago. He exchanged a small two up two down in Guildford for a 5 bedroom bungalow with swimming pool, barn and a 3 acre paddock.

The lifestyle is certainly different in Perth. There is a great entrepreuner culture and lots of opportunities for sport and alternative health pastimes.

Knowing what you just stated... since starting IM, I now workout two times a day instead of one and snack on celery sticks instead of junk food. I understand that sitting on my butt all day can wreck havick on my health, so I decided to kick unhealthy habits in the butt early; before it got me first.

              hahaha! LMAO.

This is such a funny subject! In my regular business I work from home and I make phone calls ALL day long and I sit in front of my computer from about 9 am when i roll out of bed till 6pm. THEN I start working my IM stuff and am on the computer from 6pm till midnight or later!

coffee seems to be every IMers best friend! Luckily i have good genetics and can eat whatever i want and dont gain weight. Doesnt mean im as healthy as i should be though.

We all do this for freedom and to be able to do things we WANT to do but I notice we never take that spare time to go to the gym!

Luckily I still wrestle a few nights a week to combat my EXTREMELY sedentary lifestyle!

If I wouldn't have spent so much time on the internet i wouldn't have been 2nd!

Don't look at it like a diet but a lifestyle change.
That is a mouthful, Alan. People insist on "programs" and programs don't work in the long run because a "program" is not a natural lifestyle, it is willpower.
You need a healthy LIFESTYLE to be healthy.

I don't go to gyms. It's like living inside a can to me. My dog and I go out every day and take a walk - and whenever possible that means going out gem or fossil hunting which takes us into some pretty arduous terrains. My dog gets raw meat for his enzymes (I don't believe in vegan carnivores), and when out in the wild I eat herbs and plants that grow wild and find they have extreme health benefits. When is the last time you ate the reddish pink flower of a clover or a dandelion leaf or root? Or got enough sun per week (only source of VD3) to keep your endocrine (and other systems) healthy? Or some fresh air or unfluoridated water?

My lifestyle is enhanced, not detered by my internet businesses which require me to get out and do, and to take great care of myself. Whoever heard of a rockhound that never goes gem hunting or gold prospecting? Who would buy a book on skin care or fat from a person who is rotund or looks like a shar-pei?

I am 53 and 5'6" tall, 110 lbs, and I can do anything I could do physically at the age of 20 - my dog is 11 and is a breed (rottweiler) that has a 10 year life span.

I've never been healthier and working at home has a lot to do with it.

I drink green tea mixed with raw honey (to keep the seasonal allergies away) while at the computer in the morning and evening. I usually indulge in Wild Cherry Pepsi in the afternoon.

My favorite exercise is sprinting and yoga in the backyard as well as breathing exercises throughout the day to help strengthen the abs. I never eat big meals unless I'm at a restaurant but graze throughout the day on fruit, veggies, almonds, cheese, etc.

I'm in good shape except I started doubting that when looking at photos of 5 time Olympic swimmer Dara Torres over the weekend (the ones of her in her black bikini holding her toddler). We're roughly the same age and, wow, is she in shape. I feel like such a slacker in comparison. :-)

I've gained weight over the years, but I don't necessarily attribute it to IM. 4 kids in 5 years will kill any woman's body, and I think mine came out ahead for the most part. Either way, I have tried to become healthier.

I do know that my eating habits are absolutly horrible, although when it comes to actual meals we eat quite healthy. Lots of raw fruits and veggies, minimal red meat if any ( can't stand eating any sort of meat that still resembles the animal). Now that I know how sugary smoothies are I will have to find a new "healthy" drink for me and the kids. I know I drink too much caffiene ( a 2L of pepsi a day keeps me functioning). No other bad habits though.

We get out daily for walks with the kids, even if it is just to go over to the grocery store.

Tiff, I think your blog is great. I have thought about it myself as a motivator to get my butt in gear and get in shape. Now that no more kids are in the future I really should.

Perhaps we can all do a blog ring of warriors getting into shape. It would help keep us all motivated and going. Not sure if I can be brave enough to post pics (kuddos to you on that Tiff) because after trading my itty bitty size 1 figure for a size 7 I am not so self confident in my appearance anymore.

        Hey Sylvia,

It's not the caffeine you should worry about in that 2l Pepsi,
it's the sugar....it's really packed in there and will over time
        cause major health problems....

I don't know if you picked it up earlier, but Diabetes Type 2
is the FASTEST growing disease in the western world....

This is primarily due to fast foods, fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolates,
fruit drinks and other junk foods.....

Even substituting to the sugar-free versions is not good either....they
contain aspartame which is just plain dangerous....

Investigate Xylitol, a natural sweetner which has an extremely
low GI value and in fact is good for your digestion and your
        teeth...

I think I should start a blog on this....

I know it is not the caffeine and it is the sugar. My hubby knows that all too well as he now suffers from sugar sickness a lot if he tries to even drink more than one glass of Pepsi at a time; whereas, back in high school he started his morning off with a can of Pepsi.

I will admit it I am a sugar junky and I am sure my body is paying for it. I wouldn't substitute for aspartame either way, whether it was good for me or not, it just tastes plain awful.

I would be very interested in your blog so I could learn more and I think we all need to find an alternative to smoothies since everyone seems to love them.

I alter up the smoothies, and don't always do fruit ones.

Lately I've been doing the "raw chocolate" smoothies the most.

And keep in mind, every body is different. Don't go taking health advice from people around here.

Also, diabetes can be reversed in as little as 30 days with a raw food diet.

              Hey Jason,

I've come to respect you as a marketer but I must say I find
it a little disquieting for you to be saying "Don't go taking
health advice from people around here."

A lot of the posts have very good advice that can be verified
              on any reputable health website.

It's extremely risky for you to be suggesting that diabetes can
be cured in 30 days WITHOUT proper medical supervision that those
candidates had access to. What would happen if someone just took
that advice verbatim, started an ill devised diet and had a major
              problem?

Perhaps you should include your advice in with the rest of ours.

Nothing personal but just not cool bro!

              Greg

PS: I fully subscribe to that type of holistic eating pattern
as talked about on the video.

My father had a major heart attack in 1970, where he lost 60%
of his heart function. He completely reversed most of the damage
by going on a completely balanced diet with the right nutrients
and minerals. He is still alive today 38 years later!

The other thing is that those candidates would end up with the
same symptoms if they went back to their old lifestyles and eating
              habits!

                Greg,

I think someone would be an idiot to blindly take their health advice from a marketing forum.

Would you take your car to be repaired by a chiropractor? Most likely not.

Also, I never said the word "CURE" now did I? I also said it "Can Reverse Diabetes", not that it does.

                Big difference.

                Best of luck.

                  advice from a marketing forum.

Would you take your car to be repaired by a chiropractor? Most
                  likely not.

Also, I never said the word "CURE" now did I? I also said it
"Can Reverse Diabetes", not that it does.

                  Big difference.

And I also said that every body is different.

                  Best of luck.

                  Jason

                  Hey Jason,

I fully agree, anyone should be careful where they take their
advice from and they should verify the information elsewhere
when it affects their health etc.

Some people here have medical backgrounds (Kim being one) and
much of the advice given on this thread is reliable and can be
                  vetted as well.

I just felt that you were dissing everyone else's right to give
their opinion and yet were quite happy providing some of your
own - like who died and made you the health guru? if you know
what I mean (NO OFFENCE - just have a laugh at it)

And I apologise you didn't say "cured"! And yes it's a big difference!

                  Friends????

                  Regards

                  Greg

Kim also admitted to having diabetes, and is in the health field.

Anybody else see a problem with that?

                    That's exactly my point.

                    Best of luck everyone!

    Hi Kim,

Thank you for bringing this up.

Exercise is vital. I start to get pains in my right leg whenever I stay
at the computer for too long. I often do a quick jog on my treadmill
to pump the blood around my body.

But it is so easy to just sit at your computer for hours on end.

    Really unhealthy.

    Warm Regards,
    Tom.

Great post. I didn't expect weight loss advice in an internet marketing forum btw, but when the post is great, then no complaints.

By the way, I need to put on weight instead. God knows how many pounds I have lost ever since I started marketing in the weight loss niche.

I have lost count of how many times I have repeated those things in the weight loss articles I write.

This is fantastic! I'm 28 and I had the same problem. I sat behind a desk 8 hours a day snacking on fast food and junk, then I would go home and eat junk. I gained a lot of weight and am still having problems getting it off, but the worst thing about it was my doctor turning to me two years ago and saying that, because my cholestorol was so high, and everything else that was going on, I was going to have a stroke or heart attack by the time I turned 28. Now here I am, down almost 150 lbs.

Those sites only helped a little...the bad thing about them is that their support teams don't do a lot of supporting. I felt greatly pressured to buy their products, even though there was a possibility that they wouldn't work and then when they didn't, try a new product, and so on and so on...

After I learned not to buy everything I saw on loosing weight, I am finally starting to eat better, exercise, and not worry so much about my weight.

These sites can work for some people, but not for others. It all depends on the type of person you are as well.

Personally, I think making the move from investment banking to internet marketing has done wonders for my health.

Yes, the workload is still intense but the beautiful part is that I can pick and choose my hours at the gym and I have a little more time to eat healthy and cook good food.

Plus, there's no dirty back-stabbing little pig making life a living hell (aka, the boss

Couple of things I discovered recently.

I used to think I had a really sweet tooth but, actually I enjoy eating savoury foods and salads more. I think my mind was just conditioned to think
      "Chocolate - yummy!"

The other revelation was bread. I used to think I needed bread to stop myself feeling hungry because "rabbit food" wasn't very filling.

The other day I read in Early to Rise a report that grains put twice as much sugar in your bloodstream as ice cream. Whether that's true or not, it really resonated with me and for the last two days I haven't had any bread (but followed a balanced diet).

I've lost two kilos, I feel much lighter and I don't feel hungry at all between meals.

        Hey Martin,

You make a good point about bread in general, especially white
bread. When consumed, it converts and hits the bloodstream very
quickly. This is what causes the spike in blood sugar levels.

Now, whole grain Low GI bread is altogether different. Because
of its complex makeup, it gets digested a lot slower and keeps
you feeling full for much longer. And best of all, it doesn't
spike blood sugar levels at all.

For me, the best part is, that it tastes almost like carrot cake...
if you block your nose and squint your eyes...lol

Try it and let me know...

        Regards

Ya know, it's interesting but I've gotten a LOT healthier since I started doing IM. I am really into martial arts and started doing some MMA type training and it's just amazing how much better my body is.

IM has a large role in that because of the flexibility it give me. I can jump up and do some training whenever I want to. Really nice.

I should write a new ebook..."How IM can help you lose weight and get you all the honeys"
