So what's this Domain Backorder thingy?

Hey Guys,

I've been meaning to buy a domain for a while, but as it turns out, somebody already owns it. Name.com however, gives me this option to "Backorder" the domain, since the current owner's license is scheduled to expire in a couple of months' time.
What exactly does this entail? Do I get it automatically as soon as it expires? Does the owner get to decide if he wants to renew it and if he turns it down, then I get it? Do I get a chance to bid on it once the current ownership exactly?

What exactly does it mean?

Secondly, how do I ensure that the domain lands up in my hands, preferably now but as soon as it expires in case the former is not possible?

Thanks a ton!

There is typically a period of unpredictable time, normally around three hours, in which the domain is deleted from the registrar's database when it then becomes available for someone else to register. The domain is actually not yet available when you place it on backorder. Although the current owner can not renew the domain at this point, if you are planning to buy it you have to wait until it drops.

For .com/.net/.org, it is illegal to backorder. Because of that, you really can't. Since sites know there is a market for it, they have a process that tries to poll and, if you get it, GREAT! You are happy, and they get there money. But NOPE, you do NOT necessarily get it, because you are NOT really backordering. And you WON'T get it right after the expiration! All of THAT is a GIVEN!

ICANN is ****THE**** controller of net, com, org, and many others, and they told verisign that they are NOT to backorder, PERIOD! And verisign is the ONLY one that can, for net/com, because THEY own the database. After the expiration, there is like a grace period, another period where they can renew, and a DELETION! THAT is the time at which is is UP FOR GRABS! REMEMBER, you can NOT backorder! If you "backordered" 20 years ago, NOBODY CARES! There are LOTS of "backorder" sites out there. They may decide that the name will be available at 11am est. The first one tries, was registered one day ago! FAILS! It was before deletion! The second one tries, registered 5 hours ago! FAILS! The connection was broken! The next one tries, registered 20 years ago! HEY, that's YOURS! FAILS! Collision! The next one tries, registered 1 hour ago! SUCCEEDS! So even the first attempt may FAIL! It does NOT matter when you "ordered"! It is illegal, so NO such system is in place! It doesn't matter when it was ATTEMPTED! It matters ONLY when you succeed.

Uh, Steve, whatever your "feelings" about backordering, Pragun is simply asking
      how to do so.

Pragun, how to possibly grab that expiring domain name will depend on what its
current "stage" or "phase" is. Without meaning to plug, I wrote a rather old yet
still applicable article explaining in detail how:

Dave Zan's Domain Name Blog » How To Grab An Expired Domain Name

The only change there are the players involved. The process remains as is.

In essence, you either make a backorder with the registrar or its partner if it will
expire soon, or with a major player if it's in a "redemption" phase and will become
available. It sounds like the first scenario from what you described, so go talk
to the sponsoring registrar what they'll do with it and how.

      Good luck.
