Why Doesn't Warrior Forum Have a Chat Room?

I love when I go to other forums and see there is a chat option. It is so much fun. It doesn't seem to make a difference to the amount of posting or anything and I think it would be awesome to have one here.

We would need different chat rooms, obviously, but it is such a tease to come to the site and see there are up to 800 people in the main discussion area and I can't chat with them.

I know there would obviously be problems with spam, but in all honesty we already deal with that, so, why not? I think it would be lots of fun.

Technically speaking, Chat rooms can be server resource hogs, and a pain to manage.

It's easy enough to IM a member thru the Icons provided.

      Just my opinion...

Yeah, and you would get a lot of newbies going crazy with affiliate links.

There have been several chatrooms attempted over the years. None of them really stuck around.

It wasn't an "official" WF chat room though. In my opinion, chat rooms are probably more on the time wasting side than the productive/learning side.

The problem with chat rooms is that one must be present to benefit from them. If you're not online while a good chat is occurring you're out of luck.

Also most chat rooms don't maintain archived records. This means that a great chat once shared is gone forever.

On the other hand, a good thread (like this one) can stick around for all to benefit from as they find time to peruse it. Each person can simply print the thread to create their own copy. If one is smart, and has the means, they can print to a PDF file and turn each important thread into an ebook for their own library at a later date.

That's kind of hard to do with a chat room.

Besides, those people who want to chat can simply list their instant messaging programs for all to join in and chat.

Tim - you can generate logs for chats which can be archived by dates, so you can see what you missed. You can also hold special chats which will be especially logged and archived. That's not a problem.

Devan - banning people from a chat room is very easy.

I think a chat (either web chat or IRC chat) can be great.

Well, you're partially correct. While chats could be archived with the right chat room software (not all chat room software does this) I think you missed something.

WHO is going to do this archiving? Allen? Moderators?

This would get rather tedious fairly quickly. Yes, you may be able to automate it and simply list a chat date but then who would moderate that chat log? How would it be searched? How would one go about finding a specific topic within 365 days of archived information?

Often something that looks like it will work easily on paper fall apart when it gets implemented. Real time application of ideas tends to be the crucible of testing for gold or iron.
