Shared Hosting

Depends on how you're using it. If you're using it to promote your own websites, it's cool for small amounts of traffic. If you start to get 1,000's of visitors a day it tends to bog down the shared hosting server and brings everyone else's site down with it that's on that server (I know this from experience with several of my sites being on the same shared hosting account).

If you're using it to sell to others or are using your own server to host files, that's way cooler cause you can do whatever you want with the traffic and only have yourself to answer to if the server goes down.

If you're using it to email, same thing applies...

What are you trying to do with the shared hosting account?

The hosts really do not care much about you if you have shared hosting. I would graduate to a VPS or dedicated as soon as your traffic warrants it.

security and being able to maintain it may be the biggest issues of having your own server. Nothing that can't be overcome with a little research and reading.

The advantages of having a dedicated server are many and far outweigh the disadvantages. You can even sell hosting to a select few to help cover your costs.

Shared hosting and dedicated server is like night and day. UPgrade to a dedicated service when you business needs it. Take into consideration the type of resources you need for your business.

I think you might be talking about something slightly different with "share hosting".

By the sounds of your post, where site owners siphon traffic for their own needs, it sounds more like what used to happen in the good ole days when you could signup for things like free subdomains.

So you'd get your own "website" like:

livo.somethost.com

Systems like Tripod used to have similar set ups too.


But what is more commonly referred to as "shared hosting" these days is a much more professional setup.

Basically most websites only use a tiny portion of the server's power, and so by allowing multiple people to use the same server, it cuts costs - that way you don't need to pay for power you're not currently using.

If you stick with reputable hosting companies, there isn't any need to worry about things like the owners trying to pinch your traffic - as long as they're not displaying ads on your website (which only really happens with some free hosts), your site is your site.

had shared hosting a few weeks ago started getting several thousand veiws per day and the shared host shut me down so now im on a big fat dedicated server and my sites are loading faster and ranking better.

spend the money on at least a vps
