Yahoo Answers-Is This Legal?

There are plug-ins for Wordpress, like Caffeinated Content, for pulling in content from Yahoo Answers. Of course this is duplicate content. Whatever, if duplicate content is bad or not so bad at all, I want the best chances to start with. I want unique content or content that is as unique as possible.
My idea: Assume I have a weight loss blog and a list of keywords for ranking in the serps. I pick a keyword and start a thread at Yahoo Answers. The title contains the keyword. I ask a question of may be 100 words and wait for answers. After every 3-4 answers posted by other people I reply.
After the thread dried up I pull him in. It´s now duplicate content. Normally one cannot alter the content without violating the copyright. But, since I am the author of several parts of the thread, I assume I possess the copyright for these sections.
My question: Is it legal to alter my parts of the content to produce content that is not listed at Yahoo and thereby unique. Of course without touching other people´s comments. This way I would have quite unique content, for about three quarters written by other people.

    That is not duplicate content....
Duplicate content is having the same content on the same site.
You get penalized by linking to the same content on your site...

Syndicating content is not duplicate content...

If that were the case...do you think there would be such things as RSS feeds etc?

Why would we want to syndicate content if we were going to be penalized for it?

What is going to happen with your Yahoo answers content is...Yahoo is going to get more of a boost in the serps because it will be known as the originator of the content.

However other content on your site mixed in and related posts linked together will help you gain rankings as well for variations of the keyword etc...

As a rule of thumb though...I don't link the same content to the same content even from remote sites...

  • I intend to change it from XML into Html and have it on the blog forever.
I´m not worried about getting penalized but, whatever the truth is about duplicate cotent, Google will not list the exact same content twice on a search page. Therefore, for ranking it has to be different from Yahoo.

Read their terms of service and disclaimers and/or contact their support. For example you might be the author of a post on a forum but the copyrights might be held by the forum's owner.

That's not correct - and operating with bad info leads to poor choices. There is a specific definition for dupe content - and it's not "whatever" - and google does list the exact same content (different sites) on some search pages.

The previous poster is correct - read the terms of Yahoo Answers to see what right you have to use the info on their pages. That is where you may have a problem.

  • I followed your advice and found this: Yahoo! does not claim ownership of Content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Yahoo! Services. However, with respect to Content you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Yahoo! Services, you grant Yahoo! the following worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license(s)...........

whatever your definition of 'duplicate content', at best, it 'doesnt help'. So make it unique, kiddies.

Let me get this straight? You push a weight loss site, which in almost every instance has products that are almost exclusively free-trials, and you're worried about legalities?

Maybe you don't know this, but it's nearly impossible for those trials to be easily cancelled.

Throw up 3 domains, split test the content (Yahoo answers only, unique only, and mix yahoo/unique) and see what happens.

I think you're missing the point by caring about legalities of Yahoo's content. You already push products that are shady, why not join the club and use shady content?

  • Weight loss was just an example. You could also call this shady content. But even PLR-sellers tell you te rewrite articles to make them unique. Somehow I can write forum post much quicker than writing/rewriting articles. I think this could be an easy way to produce quite unique content. Of course it has to be tested first to know if it is working.
That´s why I want to know if it is legal. I only want to start things that have a legal, rock solid foundation.
Of course one can wonder if this is ethical. But I think whatever (again) reason these people may have answering my questions, they will, not knowing the truth about me, get what they are after and feel good.

  • All these websites or landingpages seem different to me. Even though they have same title.
Would you really advice someone to build a website with 100% duplicate content.

  • I mean: copy the content from another side with permission. Like copying an article from ezines, put it on your website and expect to get ranked on the same searchpage(s) as ezines.
