Hostgator want my passport

I signed up with hostgator for the first time, as a customer, not an affiliate. They want a scanne copy of my passport or drivers license with photo ID.

As an affiliate I could understand maybe, but as a customer, what the heck is that about? I have never been asked for such information like this before.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Thanks

Apparently they do random checks to weed out 'high risk' accounts.

I also had to under go the same process. Yeah, as well as answering personal questions that is none of their business in my opinion. Well, you could say this company is SWAMPED with issues. Yeah, I did say swamp. That is where the gator belongs along with its crappy service.

Yep happened to me to if I remember correctly (it's been a few years). Also happened last time I ordered a dedicated server from another company. I guess hosting companies suffer from a lot of fraudulent orders so they need to be really careful with new customers.

they are doing these to get rid of "Bad Eggs" who will want to spoil other people business online.i think many warriors are using their services, so if they ask you to provide any document, you will have to do it.

Thread title is misleading - HG asked for a copy of a photo ID....that's all.

A drivers license is not private information - most of us easily hand it over when we write a check, etc. Your passport is proof of identity and can used as an alternate to the drivers license. It's not a conspiracy.

Requirements for providing ID when buying online services is going to increase - you can thank the nameless, faceless scammers for that.

I think maybe we should expect to start seeing a lot more of this as the feds pass even more 'security' laws.

Just like I have to show my birth certificate now to renew my license. AND, as I have been widowed twice and now remarried they are asking for death certificates , marriage licenses, and more. It's a bunch of crap.

I have had an active DL in my state since 1971 - with no tickets and no accidents. Each time I had to change my name I supplied the necessary documentation so shouldn't they already have it on file. I mean even my birth certificate has not changed since I provide it for the original license in 1971.

My kid can't even get a fishing license renewed in Florida without the birth certificate (unless he has that little gold star on his DL).

God Bless the USA. I hope people will start to wake up. Having Hostgator and others ( I have also encountered a few) asking for what seems like unnecessary personal info, leads me to believe somewhere a database is being compiled to track what is going on in the virtual world online.

    Interesting.

The company itself is fine. Never had any issue with them. I think you're being unduly harsh. Remember, the government has ultimate say and if they say tighten security and so on, well HG has to. They are one of the best hosting companies out there when you're just starting out. Easy to deal with.

It's the "know your customer" rules that they have to follow nowadays. A bit of a pain in the butt, but not really a big deal.
