How can I get opt-ins?

Hey,
I am in the process of revamping my website and I was wondering if you guys had any tips for me in regards to getting people to opt-in to my mailing list.

I know the standard stuff like offering reasonably good rewards for opt-ins and testing your website for optimal conversion but does anyone know any other tips?

Thanks.

Keep your optin form above the fold so people immediately see it when they open your page. This way they don't have to go looking for it for those lazy folk

If you get mails back from your subscribers, maybe some of them are interesting enough to put up on your site if you ask them. I think this would let people know that there are others subscribed to your list and that you're building a relationship with them.

Start with the basics ( they work! )

    then...

    - Become a master of traffic generation as that will solve most of your building a opt-in list problems.

    - Ask your subscribers to recommend your site.

    - Go viral on your site visitors asap.

    - Put an opt-in form on every page if possible.

    Hope this helps!

Create a squeeze page. When people fill it out (enter name & email) then and only then will they be able to access your site. If they want to look at you site bad enough then most will fill it out. Or you can offer them a free ebook if they fill out the info. on your squeeze pg. There's a few good ways to do this. Do some research. Pay attention to what other marketers are doing and copy.

No offense, but squeeze pages are very annoying to many people, including me. If I go to a website, and I am immediately prompted to fill out a form, I leave. Plain and simple. While I may not be the same as most of the world, I believe that many people find squeeze pages bothersome.

Offer something that you visitor cannot resist, a free piece of information that they could not get anywhere....People want something real in return for their information. And once you get the opt in make sure that you continue to offer quality that they cannot get for a dime a dozen somewhere else.

    Look 2 steps ahead.
Why do you need opt-in list? What are you going to do with opt-in list?

I hope you're not under the illusion that these opt-ins are itching to read your upcoming promotions, fill-in CPA forms or buy offers via your affiliate links?

I wrote a piece of useful software that allows people to build their membership sites for free. I got about 700 opt-ins to download it. Out of 700 opt-ins - are exactly zero responded to any of my highly targeted promotions.
    Usual responses to promotions:
    1. quiet unsubscribes
    2. unsubscribes surrounded by 4-letter words (and love is not one of them).

But because i building a business out of my software, I see requirement to opt-in as a hurdle, not as any help.
So i plan to remove opt-in requirement whatsoever, let everyone freely get eval version of software and enjoy it or come for more.
I see it as more logical way to approach market.

Sincerely I hate promo emails, opt-ins and 1-page salesletters myself, so it might be that people felt my energy toward it

Hey, thanks for your post. Lol, I know people aren't waiting for a sales pitch. My mailing list will not be used to promote product launches or to sell products.

It will be 85% value (information and tips), and maybe 15% friendly reminders about guides or products I've had positive experiences with and these "reminders" will be free of hype or pressure.

Additionally, I think that the quality of response you get from your opt-ins depends on a couple of factors. One, if you've given them a wealth of quality information or advice in the past and two, your niche and target market.

I think certain niches/target markets are less keen on buying than others, but again that's just my opinion.

I've had much success by putting sign ups in more than one location. One is under an image (link) and the other is putting an actual sign up box above the fold on a primary page. I usually ask for just the first name and email address. This allows you to optimize the number of opt-ins while at the same time allowing you to customize your emails to each individual by first name.

The other thing that's worked on my site was to offer a bonus download with an opt-in for the newsletter. Legally, you could market to any individual who downloads your bonus at least once as long as you have an opt-out feature. That said, the opt-in on the registration for the free download works about 30% of the time.

Thanks for the advice. Are you saying that you have a 30% conversion ratio?

I agree, see how much a splash page opt-in effects CPMs. Might be very worth a small dip in click through

I think nothing beats the age old principal to opt in's and list building...

Offer something of TRUE value, and people will come.
