I love to write. Can a hobby become income?

Hello all. I am so happy I have joined the WF. I've already gained so much in my three day membership. Thanks to many friendly and informative people I have realized I would like to start my venture online with writing. But how? Where does one start? I have gotten comments that I need to offer a service to start building some income to invest into my marketing training. CAn someone give me a jump off point? I can write well. At least judging from articles I have read online. I would like to put my skill to use but just can't get going. Writing for others? What do I write about! Is my information overload showing? Haha. Thanks in advance. Any Advice is appreciated. ( no matter how blunt )

Do you have a portfolio yet? I mean do you have sample writing that you will be able to show to people who want to hire you? If not don't worry about it just make one.

Write 2 or 3 articles on your own about any topic you want. Put your best writing into them and then when you bid on jobs or post ads you can display your samples.

Write up a good ad and post it in the Warriors for Hire section. Look through the existing ads for content writers there to see what others are offering compared to what you can offer.

Always do your best work, no matter how silly the request. If someone asks you to write 500 words about Dale Earnhardt Mousepads then you try to make your article the War and Peace of mousepad articles. Always over deliver.

Build relationships with the good clients, let the bad ones go.

Thank you gamevoid. This is excellent information. This is where I was stumped. What to write about. I guess mouse pads is something haha. I'll be sureto cheek out other writers and see where I need to go with this. Funny how having a child makes you think about what's important. Thanks again !

As said above, write a few articles to show to possible clients and then set up a topic here in the Warriors for Hire section. You can normally get work pretty quick and after that it all comes with experience.

Glad to see that you have also had great results from joining this community

As Gamevoid mentioned, get together a great portfolio of your best writing. I always recommend doing several types of articles as well, not the same type. For example a review article, an informative article, and maybe a press release.

Then you can outsource work on here, or you can check out freelancing websites like oDesk, eLance, Freelancer, etc. Finally you could even become a paid writer for sites like Demand Media (DM) TextBrokers.com, etc.

Best of luck, and welcome to the path of writing!

Yes. I'll have to do all that. I'm new to this all but desperate to stay home with my princess. My fiancé comes home everynight too tired to even take his boots off. I want to ease his burden. Than you for all the sites you've given me. I'll be checking them all out. As for a press release. What is that exactly ? I feel stupid for asking but if it'd one thing on these forums I've learned it's that no one question is too dumb to ask. Thanks again!

No problem for asking! You can find a press release here (Women Go Gaga for Zaggora Hotpants Launch) that's a random one I just found on the front page. There are tons more on that website.

Basically a press release is an announcement about a new product, service, or company that get published on the internet. There are many good guides on how to create press releases on the net, just do a quick Google search and I'm sure you'll find great stuff.

Keep it up, there are many people that make great money from writing online.

Personally, I would advise against both of those. If you are wanting to make serious income and build a strong client base then you are wasting your time on those sites as well as sites like Suite101, AssociatedContent, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I made decent money with Demand Studios but the work was grueling and not interesting and the editorial process was a crapshoot.

You might want to write a few articles on the child care or baby supplies market.

These could include reviews of strollers, cribs, and other baby items on Amazon.

    Or titles such as:
Surviving the First Six Months of Motherhood
7 Ways to Help Your Baby Fall Asleep
The Ten Most Popular Picture Books for Toddlers

etc. etc. You get the idea. It's simply using what you're doing everyday as article topics. You could use them in your portfolio or sell them as PLR. If you decide to look into selling PLR articles you should check out the courses by Peggy Baron and Tiffany Dow. Both are good.

Resist the temptation to price your services too low.

Feel free to PM me with other questions.

I recommend posting up a gig on Warrior Forum - webmasters need content, so give it to them!

Congrats on choosing freelancing. It's a great place to start, especially if you want to learn about IM while you earn.

You could also try other freelance sites like Elance, and Freelancer... but I HATE the fact that people bid low and throw up junk content. If there's one bit of advice I could give you, it's that you don't compete with low quality writers.

Since you love to write, I'm guessing you are a good writer... so make sure you charge what you're worth

    Good luck!

Hi, and welcome :-) You can certainly make money writing. You don't need to spend anything to get started, but if you want to save time, there are some very good and not too expensive reports out there that will get you going faster.

If you're interested in trying the freelance sites, have a look at Nick Brighton's WSO on making money writing on Elance.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...ws-inside.html

I can also recommend Peggy Baron's book on getting started writing PLR -

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...delivered.html

And, when you're ready to take your plr business to the next level, Tiffany Dow puts out a great report about setting up a website selling plr -

PLR ATM Official Site By Tiffany Dow

I have no vested interest in these products, I'm just doing fine as a writer and I found all of them very useful. As I said, you don't need to buy anything to get started, but they outline successful business models that you can start right now, without having to reinvent the wheel.

    All the best

I agree. Put some good writing on Amazon Kindle and price it under $9.99 and watch it fly (if it is really good of course). It is real easy to do.... which is uncommon for Amazon (yea... talking about you Amazon S3....)

If you love to write, and what you write is good, you can always offer your writing services on places like elance or odesk or fiverr. Charge a few dollars per article of 500-600 words. You can charge more if it's an original article, and charge less if it's simply a rewrite of an existing article.

You can also start writing your own articles if you'd like to go into marketing your own products, or promote other people's products. What you write will depend on what niche you go into.

Some people say 'do what you love and the money will follow'. This is only partially true. Your passion has to intersect with a niche that is profitable, otherwise the money will not come if you simply do what you love.

Some good advice already posted here.

If you are a good writer, a great place to start to get good value for your services would be a place like Constant Content. They are extremely strict in terms of what they approve, but they allow you to sell your articles for top dollar or fulfill content requests made by their customers.

I wrote a full review of their service for authors looking to sell content:
Sell Your Writing Service – Constant Content Review - Robert's Review Blog

You can read over that and see if you meet the criteria and decide if you want to pursue business through their site.

Other good places to market your services:
Warriors For Hire - Warriors are always looking for quality writers it seems. This is a good place to let people know your services are available.
Unique content - Textbroker.com - Sort of similar to constant content, but they don't pay nearly as well and are not as strict in their review process. So this may be a good place to start if you need to brush up on your skills first but still earn some money.

Well I've been stalking the warriors for hire forum and I gotta say I'm very intimidated. I feel so silly but I don't know what all these acronyms are and half of what people are talking about! I get writing quality content like reviews. I can do that. But it seems too simple. I'm feeling discouraged.

Okay, first of all you say you love to write, yet noone has asked you what you love to write or write about? What do you have skills and/or knowledge in? Are you confident in your abilities to research topics which you have little to no prior knowledge about?

You say you would like to start your online venture with writing. Again, writing what? You say you can write well... at least judging from articles you have read online. What kind of articles that have been published already that you are comparing your competence to?

All of us believe we can do certain things well, but is it good enough that others would pay you to do it for them? Compare it to considering yourself a good driver because you've never had an accident... however, do you have the skills, knowledge, and abilities to be paid, and make a living as a NASCAR driver?

I learned at a very early age that no matter how good you are, or think you are at something, if you expect or want people to pay you for doing it... you have to do it their way, and in the timeframe they want it done.

You also ask "Can a hobby become income?" Generally, when one turns a hobby into a money maker, it is no longer a hobby, but a business. You may have a hobby of collecting model train, but when you start getting paid to find and collect model trains for others, it is no longer your hobby. It is then a business, and you have to find what your customers(not what you want, like, or enjoy) want with the exact specifications, and in the timeframe they want it in.

So, I think before anyone can point you in a fruitful direction, there are factors that need to be known, considered, and answered first. Personally, I would not feel comfortable trying to give you any advice or suggestions until I had all the facts from you to analyze and evaluate.

There's no doubt a hobby can become an income and a big one at that. The more you spend time on your hobby and investing into it the better you'll become and people who don't have the skill you have will be willing to pay for it as long as you put yourself out there aand build a reputation for yourself.

It's almost exactly how I began working online many years ago - pursuing
    a love of writing

Now, I teach information marketers how to do it. You may find my book
"Think, Write & Retire" of help, or if you'd like to start a writing career
with freelance articles, one of my other guides may be helpful.

Either way, don't get bogged down (over-)thinking the process. Jump in,
test out one way of doing things, see if it works (and you like/enjoy it).

Scale what works well. Drop things that don't pan out. Stay curious.
Keep experimenting. Learn, listen, but then ACT on your instincts

    All success

Another excellent option would be to start your own WordPress blog and write some great content for it as often as you can. Once it's established (you can learn a great deal about promotion, etc, here), you can explore means of monetizing it.

Pick a niche you love to write about, for a beginner that's always easier than learning a subject from scratch

This isn't a get-rich-quick scheme, but for the long haul, you will achieve FAR better income from your own blog than you ever will writing for other people.

    Hello,

You can either offer writing services or write an info product. You're decision will have to depend on a number of factors such as your target income, how much effort you are willing to put, and flexibility among many others. Freelancing can be profitable as long as you choose a specific niche. Avoid competitive niches like weight loss and Internet marketing unless you gained extensive knowledge in promoting stuff online. Most freelancers had to start small like getting lower rates than usual. In my experience, I started writing for a business outsourcing company and wrote 500-word articles for $3. I know, that's outrageously cheap but that's just how it works at the start.

Alternatively, if you want to "work for yourself", I suggest you write ebooks. These are a great source of passive income. You can earn money for many years to come. Again, keep in mind the importance of choosing a niche. I recommend Yuwanda Black's ebook "How to write an ebook in 30 days" You can find it at her site inkwelleditorial [dot] com. Great stuff about writing ebooks.

Good luck in your writing venture!

  • If you can write, I would not recommend to write for others. Instead use that skill and write for yourself. Find a subject you enjoy writing about, start a blog, build it up. Get original content, put related products on it from amazon or adsense or something. I would not recommend to write for others, because you only get paid like $5-$15 for a short 300 word article. Where if you wrote for yourself, you can build a good income over time. So I guess if you're looking for something short term, you can write for others, but long-term I would recommend to write for yourself.

If you really want to make money writing, you should write for Constant Content. You get paid very well there, but you have to follow their complicated guidelines. Once you get used to them, you can make a lot of money, and without having to promote your work because CC already gets a lot of traffic.

Write about money-making methods, weight loss, and in-demand topics.

I just sent you a rather lengthy PM with some tips for getting started. In short, PM me if you have any questions, and get a website set up with some samples! A .info will work fine for your writer's profile and that coupon code will get your first month of hosting for only one cent. Like I said, if you don't have that on your Paypal to pay for it, let me know and I'll buy an article to help you get the money. That will even get you your first testimonial for if/when you post a Warriors for Hire thread!

    Heres how:
    1. Find paid work, good places to look are like here or DP (Build long term buyers)
    2. Freelance
    3. Web 2.0 and article writing (affiliate, squidoo, AC, etc)
    4. Blog about what you love, find ways to monetize it
    5. Write an ebook and sell it
    6. Self Publish at amazon kindle or lulu
    7. Build a portfolio first (use above methods) then go for the big guns (copywriting, mags, ezines, newspapers that pay big bucks)

Hope this help, i love writing and would love to be a successful writer some day, i have done 1 to 4. But unfortunately managing university, personal life and making money doesn't go hand in hand.

    good luck,
