Don't know how this one will turn out, but definitely something to watch...

s.978 - As Techdirt explains it: "If you embed a YouTube video that turns out to be infringing, and more than 10 people view it because of your link . . . you could be facing five years in jail."

s.968 or the "Protect IP Act" - this will authorize the DOJ to file a civil action against the registrant or owner of a domain name that accesses a foreign infringing Internet site or the foreign-registered domain name itself."

And if your read further into the bill, this includes just hyperlinking to a site that contains copyrighted material.

Yea. the govt opened a can of worms going after torrent sites. Torrent sites don't host the files. They are just a listing service - kinda like Google is. But, now the govt states you don't need to be hosting the content to be responsible...you just have to provide links to it.

    Scary stuff....

Isn't that Youtube's responsibilty to go after copyright infringements placed on their website. They take down videos all the time because of it.

I guess, they are to busy with doing that and can't be held responsible if a few videos slip through every day since they are being mass uploaded. How do you control that .

Interesting though, I'll keep an eye on this.

I'd say 33% of YT's content infringes on copyrights.

Copyright holders need to get over it: YT vids PROMOTE but don't HURT your intellectual property.

NBA highlights make me want to buy jerseys and tickets. It creates demand and interest.

Great example of another thing that the government wants to put their hands in even though it shouldn't be in their jurisdiction.

How would a bill like this help those that are being "stolen" from exactly?

If you read threads here about copyright you may notice that few people take it seriously UNLESS it is their copy that's been stolen.

The general attitude is "everyone does it" or "the worst that can happen is I have to take down the page". Other excuses are "I gave credit" or "I think it's Fair Use". What you don't see is any fear of consequences.

For videos - this change in legislation creates the potential for real consequences rather than a harsh word and a slap on the wrist. It may be a deterrent but I don't see how it's enforceable. Who will count the downloads?

          YouTube. Server logs. etc.

The bill should be done as KNOWINGLY linking to or embedding. IMHO.

How can that be when Youtube provides you with the code to embed videos? And don't the people who upload them have the ability to disable embedding? I just assumed when you see the option, "embed this video" that this implies it's legal.

Haha, what losers. They can stuff it. This is EXACTLY why I'm libertarian. If they want to throw me in jail, that's fine. Instead of working FOR THE STATE, I'll let THE STATE pay for my housing and food while I'm in jail.

Btw, I think the mainstream elites want to find a way to shut the internet down. They can't control the message anymore and the system is becoming unstable. This scares them so they now view "hacking" a greater threat than the United States being in 3 wars and 2 other countries lobbing missiles at them. According to our government, it's a terrorist act to embed You-tubes, but it's fine to routinely fire missiles, killing (innocent) people in other countries. This is exactly how screwed up things are!

    It's all gonna collapse soon...
