Chance of landing a big sponsorship?

I am curious if anyone has had success approaching big companies and getting sponsorship for their projects or websites.

It seems the companies with the BIG money do all their marketing and advertising in-house and have a wall up to block the little guys from pitching ideas.

So have you ever approached a company and gotten a sponsorship? If so how did you do it?

I can't say that I have done that, but I have had folks approach me. Some are not so legit, but some were. It was a nice feeling.

It did take a fair amount of back and forth communications to make a deal that worked for both of us. And there have been some I have turned down, because I am not so much interested in someone having editorial control over my site.

That one thing really has kept me from exploring more sponsorship opportunities.

I had a ton of interest in my dog site from Eukanuba, who make a premium brand of dog food. Unfortunately, soon after I contacted them, they had a salmonella outbreak in one of their production plants and had to do a worldwide recall. They didn't want to do any sponsorship or advertising until they had better stock levels.

I just put together a nice looking proposal, with statistics showing how many people would be interested in my site, and what that meant for them. It was nothing about me, just about how my site would benefit them and their customers, and that they needed to be involved before I asked any other company for support. I also had research and statistics to show that it wasn't just my opinion that was in the proposal.

I will say that no other companies expressed as much interest, so doing this isn't a guarantee of a positive response to your proposal.

It helps to get in touch with them and ask them who their marketing and advertising manager is, so you can direct your proposal to the right person.

    Good luck.

I guess if you want to go after the big wigs you have to present your best front, not just a simple email but a nice package with prices and all the details!
