Not sure what I'm doing wrong...But I am still confident

I haven't made much, if any money online. As a matter of fact, I've probably spent 30X more than I've made, but I am still optimistic. Here's why...

I was watching the Market Samurai videos and my 11 year old asked me what I was doing. I am a teacher by trade, so i took this opportunity to teach him what I knew about internet marketing. I found out I knew more than I thought. After talking to him for 30 minutes, I tabbed him my new business partner. I let him help me with my niche research and we hope to have a sight up within days.

The moral of this story is this...If you are struggling like me, just be patient. You probably know more than you think. From everything I've read and experienced, internet marketing is a "failed business." Compared to baseball, the IM business success rate is far lower than a 300 batting average.

My advice, hang in there. Quit buying anything and everything related to "make millions in a week with one touch of a button." Chances are, you have already gained the knowledge to make money. Just get better at what you know. If you must spend money, then spend $37 on a war room membership. There are plenty of free offers there to keep you "learning."

Thanks for your time and good luck with your businesses.

Mike

Good to hear you are not giving up!

Maybe if you share with us what you are doing we can help you figure out what you are doing wrong!

But at least you have made some money and did something, I'm sure you will make it very soon, good luck!

    • I've done a little bit of everything. That's probably my problem. I am now focused on blogs (sort of...I have two sites promoting an affiliate program). I am trying to use Market Samurai to focus on a niche and build a blog around it. I am using Adsense, Clickbank, RAPBank, etc... to monetize it.

My biggest problem, is of course, traffic. I am starting to see the big picture through MS that I need to be better at SEO through keyword research, longtail keywords, etc... That will probably lead to my main weakness, which is writing. I have trouble writing articles with good content to rank my keywords high in the search engines.

I see a couple of things. With so many affiliate offers, you appear as a bookstore on the Golf site. It makes it look like every other "click my affiliate link" site. Narrow down your offerings to things that you believe in. Why ten books on "the proper swing" when 1 would suffice? Not saying you have that many, but just an example. Focus on one thing, make it work, then expand. People are looking to you for answers, not more decision making. Tell them what they should do. Don't leave it up to them to decide. "Must Read for any Golfer!" etc..

Next, you are like many others in that you seem to be going to concentrate on Google. While the searches are fantastic to hold rank in, they are not the only sources of traffic. Your rankings that you work so very hard for can be taken away in an instant. I got zapped hard in the Panda update for one of my sites, yet I still make sales on a daily basis. This is what you want, many avenues of traffic. Lots of little streams combined to make a river.

The very first thing anyone should do before even contemplating where they will host their website or sales page, is to plan their attack in detail.
Not once has anyone having an issue of this nature, that when asked, could present a business plan for review. Not ever...

You really want to know where you are going before you ever write one piece of your sales letter or one headline for your website. Know exactly what you are going to do. If need be, schedule out daily tasks that point to your goals. Else, like many others I see here, you will contract the headless chicken disease. Something that most all of us have suffered at one time or another.

Would anyone start a brick and mortar store without a BA? Could you take your plan for your Internet Business to the bank and get a loan because your plan is so tight that the bankers would believe in you? Yes, you can put up a site and test away. Testing is a good thing. But that should be a part of your plan, and not your entire hope.

The best of luck to you.

That is why this business is a triail and error and takes years for some of us to figure it out. Like you, I have not made much, bought way more than I ever made, but have not given up. I only recently found my own passion and plan to build around it. And, now I have years of knowledge, trial and error, and a whole bunch of other stuff under my belt.

While I have learned some useful info from some IM info products, I've learned more from trial and error. So my advice is to fail early, and fail often.

The other spot to spend money is on outsourcing. Like on writing in your case. If you don't have the ability to write well thought out articles that are SEO'd properly and what-not you should hire someone that can.

Just a few well-written articles can boost your ranking by a done.

Otherwise you could syndicate articles from directories for your blog.

Do you build a list with your blogs? In that case traffic would not be the problem, but what would you do with that traffic...

More links to your content should be your focus when you aren't writing. And generally just a couple articles per week for your blogs is sufficient.

    • Thanks for all the responses. Yes, I have an opt-in box on all my sites. Haven't gotten many to sign up, though. I might need to make a better offer to sign up.

I think part of my problem on my golf blog is that I use WP-Robot to pull in a bunch of content, therefore, I don't target specific longtail keywords. That's going to be my area of focus for the next few weeks.

Also, backlinking is tougher than I thought. I can find PR 5,4, and 3 websites, but getting my link on there is a little more difficult than I thought.

Once again, thanks for the responses, and I wish all of you luck in your IM adventures. If I can help, in any way, please let me know.

        Hey Mike,

Great positive attitude, my son just started marketing with me this week, although he's a wee bit older than 11 : )

Although I'm not SEO guru, you can in MS check your competitors backlinks and anchor text and effectively reverse engineer..

That's a good story. You just might want to hand over the reigns completely to the 11 year old. Then you'd really have it easy. He'd just have to report to you each week on how much money you've made.

    Hey man,

Thats actually a GREAT strategy. A lot of times we dont have anyone to talk to about all this marketing stuff cause everyone else thinks we are crazy or something. That leads us to always being in our heads, thinking about great ideas and not taking action.

But when you sit down and talk it out with someone, even a young dude, it will help solidify your knowledge to a concrete level. They always say that you've never truly mastered something until you are able to teach it.

Thanks for sharing bro! Rock on!

Internet marketing is all about many failures to become successful. You've gotta keep trucking along, and giving it time to learn the ins and outs. As you noticed, yes you'll spend more than you earn in the beginning but in the long run its well worth it when each and every month you begin to earn more and more online.

Keep it up! Keep learning! Never give up and you'll surely make it online.

Also Its not about working hard its about working smart finding what works for you may be as simple as finding out your true passions what you really enjoy doing. One question i asked myself is when i wake up in the morning what do i think about over and over again and i realized that i need to follow that passion.
