Choosing between 2 niches

Hi guys,

I am just starting out and trying to find a niche for my blog. I have read how it is better to just try something out when you first start - rather than spending too much time trying to find the perfect keywords to work with.

But I'm deciding between two options for the niche:

(1)

Market - Education
Monthly searches for exact phrase in Google Keyword Tools - 1900
Google results for the keyword in quotes - 25,800
Approximate CPC - $0.10

(2)

Market - Fitness
Monthly searches for exact phrase in Google Keyword Tools - 880
Google results for the keyword in quotes - 181,000
Approximate CPC - $2.42

So I guess basically, I am choosing between (1) that seems to have decent stats (I think?) but a low CPC and (2) which has more competition but a high CPC.

Would love to hear the opinion of you more experienced guys - then I will go for it!

Thanks in advance!

Hi - Also depends on whether you can get an exact match domain. If you can't then competition is also a factor that needs serious consideration... regards Allen

Are you saying with an exact match domain competition is left in the dust just by having a cool domain name?

      I don't think so.

Google has lowered the impact of EMDs in its rankings.

The availability of an EMD is NEVER a criteria for going into a specific niche. Profitability of the niche itself is, and if you can drive targeted traffic.

    Hi there,

I can get a .net or .org for (1) and a .org for (2) - both exact

I should say also that I am interested in both niches and so should be able to generate some good content.

Pick any and get to work.

In the long run the very first niche you picked won't be that important, it's just for learning the stuff, and making decisions like this will be much easier once you have some content online and see what happens.

Thanks guys - I appreciate the feed back. I'm almost ready to go, I just thought perhaps there was one of the two options that was obviously a better choice than the other from the figures I stated. If not then I will just pick one at random.

And always give your best shots!

    Thanks Corsley,

Was there any particular reason for going with (1) over (2)?

I always go for a niche that I know I can make money in from a variety of sources (i.e. Amazon, Clickbank, can I create my own product?, etc.). Choose the one with the highest earning potential.

Thank you.. and the fact that the CPC on (1) is low - should that steer me towards (2) in your opinion?

Ralf is exactly right. EMD's dont have that much impact anymore...Although they could initially boost you up on the serps until googlebot determines your domain age and then sandboxes you. Content is king! You could have the ugliest domain on the web but if your content is what your users are looking for, google will bring them to you

What matters is which one you can get to the site and get a click.

Even if you got all 1900 visitors that searched and if every one of them clicked, you've earned $192. Well, I think about 70% of that is what Google gives the AdSense publisher, so 70% of the 192.00

If you got 1/2 of the 880 you'd make over a grand.

Of course, you wont get anything close to those kind of numbers even if you rank number 1.

But the CPC will not matter if you can't rank the page.

You're chance of getting this right the first time are just about null. Sorry but it is true. You're off to a great start, just don't let potential failure stop you from trying nor if you do fail let it stop you from trying again.

Get in the game and stay in it. You can host many sites for the same dollars, though you'll need a new domain name most of the time.

It is easy to become frustrated when things don't work. I've lost interest a time or two myself.

But I got back in, now I'm doing everything I can not to have to upgrade my sever again.

    Hi Ryor,

You're leaving out a hugely important step. I know a lot of people say to test your competition by searching in quotes. I don't even bother with that any more.

If you search in quotes you get a highly different result from no quotes. What will your searches be using?

The number doesn't matter. It doesn't matter at all.

What matters is the top 10 rankings, especially with numbers that low. Around 40% goes to the number 1.
(that number is from memory, might be a little lower but in the 30 to 40% range.

Anything after number 10 in the rankings is next to worthless, especially for AdSense in a small number of searches per month.

Look at the strength of the top 10. This gets hard with and time consuming without the right tools but in the long run it is less time than building a site when the top 10 sites can't be beat unless you know how to beat them. There are other factors in a heavily competitive niche where you competition knows what they are doing. With higher CPC you'll usually find stronger competition.

You beat them 20 to 40% with on page SEO and 60 to 80% with backlinks. Can you beat their backlinks? Those are not exact numbers of course.

Don't look at competition number, look at competition strength. Don't look at over all site strength, look at page strength. You can't beat Amazon for backlinks but you might be able to beat them with one very well targeted keyword for a specific page. The same goes for other competitors that are not as strong as Amazon. Even Amazon can be outranked for a particular item/page.

The tool I use to analyize this isn't publicly available. I've been using for three months and my income has risen by a factor of five! ABC Backlink creator also played a huge role in that. SeoPressor also helps a great deal with on page SEO. You can find links for ABC and SEO here or Google it. I'd give you my affiliate link but I don't want to get slapped silly. lol

However, the most important thing to do as a beginner is to get started. Don't over think it, start.

Yep you could outrank amazon on certain keywords if your content is targeted. I have an electronics store and was outranking them for a couple of key terms. I got a call from their business development team (or whatever they're called) one day asking me if I was interested in signing up with them as a seller on amazon! They were smart. They saw how good I was doing and when they found that it would be hard to beat me, they bought me with a free month's worth of seller fees and a low percentage fee structure deal. And of course I accepted the offer! I win both ways. So my point? You can outrank the big boys sometimes if you focus your keywords and content on specific subjects/products. So like RustyF said, check your top 10 competition! Cheers.

It is interesting to read the responses. All the advice is good, but this is what I have discovered.
#1 go with something you are passionate about
#2 write articles and develop a good signature
    #3 join associated forums
    #4 go for it

Things have really changed a lot since I first started building webpages. SEO is now changing as well as google constantly rolls out new 'rules' that affect us all, especially those trying to market a product.

While keyword research is a good tool, I have been discovering that it may be more advantageous to develop a BRAND (ie: your name) rather than trying to match keywords.

There will always be someone behind you that grabs a better long tail keyword and knocks you off the top PR, but there are only a very few that can steal you, or your Branded Name.

Just another want to consider it. The other advantage of branding yourself is that, if you are like me and have interests in several niches, branding yourself can carry you through them all. Think of General Mills , involved in a myriad of diversified products.

    Just my thoughts.

I have a quite similar view with bcagle...he has show you the 4 simple steps to kick off . Since you are new in this online world and why make yourself in hard position. Select the one closest to your interest or you have the most experienced. Go for it to begin your blog. You have many good information there already. Keyword is one of the powerful tools but it is not everything. there are other ways that play a part in your whole marketing campaign.

I would always prefer to go where the money is . So , I would go with the second option . But , be prepared for tough competition and hard word .

BTW, before you enter any niche , make sure that you analyze the level of competition .
