Any Alternative to Green Screen Studio ?

Hi Warriors

Any of you know of any alternative to Chroma Key without the need to set-up a physical Green studio. I do not have space to set up a studio (with appropriate lighting) at home. Are there softwares there that allows you to change the video background to create the Green studio effect ( can Adobe After Effects do that? )

Not unless you want to Rotoscope it out by hand.

Actually, I did see a piece of software a few years ago that did attempt to do what you want, but the results were poor and I don't think it ever left the development phase...

Technically you can key out ANY somewhat consistent color background. Video software allows you to define the color you want to remove. So you could stand in front of a green, black, purple or whatever wall and key it out later.

The reason that in film production blue or green are preferred is that they can easily be avoided in clothing and they don't conflict with natural skin color.

A red screen for example would make it hard to key without affecting skin color. Especially when lightning isn't perfect, and the screen shows up with many shades of red in the video.

By the way: you don't really need much space for it. Just hang enough green screen sheet on the wall behind you, so that the area you want to show in the final video is covered.

So for a talking head video you need only a small green screen, and you can put it just on the wall. No need for big construction work. And light you need for any video.

Try to sit or stand not to close to the green screen, or the green will reflect too strong on your shoulder and hair, which makes keying harder.

One more thing: question the necessity of green screen generally. Is it really crucial for the video you want to create? It adds many hours to the production time, and in many cases a video of you just being in a real environment might create more trust.

I used green screen in previous years, and I stopped because I found that it costs a lot of time while not really making a big difference in the result I needed. It just didn't matter if i gave my talk in front of a white wall or in front of a fancy video background.

I noticed that even the big guys stopped using it, probably because it makes them more like you and me, instead of the TV professional with big budget. Look at Tony, nothing but a white background in his video:

I am not sure that whether Adobe After Effects can do that or not? But You can use ulead 11.0 instead of Green Studio.

You could paint one wall with some of this.

(you'll need more than the tester size, lol)

Hi everyone, thanks for your input. You all have been most helpful.

Steve, sounds like a niche - a software that can create the green background effect will allow us to do the video shoot anywhere I have yet to see a video tutorial that shows this. There's one youtube video that shows how you can create the transparent effect with Adobe.

Ralf - thanks for the advice. That's one solution. And I agree the key question is whether it is necessary considering the time investment. I also watch the video you posted. It's engaging - and I must say Tony's use of white/black contrast looks great.

    Hilarious - I'll have a look at ulead 11.0.
