Do it RIGHT don't just get it done:

I just wanted to share a little experience of mine because I think that's it is a mistake that a ton of people make, both new and advanced. When you go to build a site, or a list, or a squeeze page, or whatever; you always have to keep 2 things in mind: it's purpose, and how your reader will view it. Why?

Because I think a lot of us have the 'check it off the list' mentality, and it's only going to hurt you and your business. In my case, I set up a squeeze page with a fairly crappy freebie. My conversion rate was around 8%. So...

I spent 5 straight days creating a 43 page freebie and completely redid the squeeze page. Same layout, just a much better, much more targeted offer. Now that page is converting at 51%, which means...

No matter how you figure value for a list, my income just went up roughly 400%. So please, learn from my mistake: take your time and do it right, both for you and your visitors.

I agree with you, we must think like our customers - why should I buy this?

That's a good point about giving away freebies that are crappy. The thing is if you give away stuff that really is sub par and you know it then the people who did opt in for this said freebie will very likely not buy anything from you either if you can't be bothered to give them anything half decent and will immediately write you off. On the other hand if you give away quality stuff they will remember that and are much more likely to do business with you in the future. I know I would.

I 100% agree with this, Cee. One of the ways that I develop personal relationships with my customers (both current and future) is that I give away things. I completely dedicate myself to customer service and satisfaction. People like to trust other people. They like to help other people. It makes them feel good and warm inside. So, when you help somebody out in your newsletter, they will remember that. And when you actually try to sell them something, they will remember that you're a honest person that really wants to help them out, and then you've made the sale.

So you've had experience with Microsoft too?

Personally, I always go with my wife, a family member, or a non-marketing friend of mine as my guinea pig. I'm incredibly biased, since I now think like a marketer. When my wife reads my salescopy, and I see her face make that confused look, I know that I've screwed up, and it's time to fix things. It's always good to have a fresh perspective on things.

I'm not so good at the look of things, and its probably a part of my low conversions. It also takes such a long time. Its good to get some draft out there atleast till you can make it nice and blow it up.
