I just read a blog comment from a person who bought a Shake Weight - you know, from the infomercial...

I purchased a Shake Weight, watched the DVD — twice in fact. No where does it indicate how to start the darn thing to shaking. Went to their website concerning returning for refund. that was no help. If I could use it, it might work. But not know how to ‘start’ it, just another waste of money.

Hi,

You don’t “start” it. You need to actively shake it. It doesn’t run on batteries.

...did anyone else besides me just DIE laughing??

This teaches me that refunds are not always a reflection on the product - sometimes the customer is just extremely lazy, or not very bright!

    Haha Lol...

But in all fairness, the infomercial does make it look like it shakes by itself...

On another topic, I used to "shake weight" every night in my teen years :p. Didn't get close to getting buff. So, I don't that product will do much

Many of those scenes show very little hand motion while the machine is bouncing fast which gives the illusion that the machine is doing more work.

            Haha, love it.

An old friend of mine was manager at a big chemist/pharmacy and once told me about a guy who bought one of those twist-up deodorant sticks.

Apparently, he brought it back wanting a refund because he'd followed the instructions and claimed the deodorant didn't work.

Unfortunately, he might have taken the, "Twist and push up bottom" instructions a little bit too closely!!!

I bought a toy from Amazon.com for my friends 2 year old son. It was one of those toys that shoots balls out of the top of it. I received the item and I tested it before Christmas. I put the batteries in it and turned on the off/on switch but nothing happened. I contacted Amazon.com and exchanged it for a new one only to have the same problem with the new toy.

That's when I pushed the yellow head at the top of the toy and it started to run.

    Here's the toy

Umm...isn't the REAL lesson here that people selling products need to make the instructions clear?

I was wondering if the Shake Weight ran on batteries or not, now I know. So, no, it's not as obvious as some people think. However, I'm pretty sure I could figure it out.

Anyway, are there instructions with the Shake Weight that say "The Shake Weight is human powered. No need for batteries. No need for electricity. Just start shaking it for the workout of your life."

    ?

I know I've seen a few e-book sellers give a brief explanation about what a digital download is.

Anyway, glad you all can laugh at the "idiots" who are "out there", what's it like to be perfect?

    Just curious.

Good points. Really can't argue with that... moment of immaturity there.

I like your lines - "The Shake Weight is human powered. No need for batteries. No need for electricity. Just start shaking it for the workout of your life."

...you're a natural! Have to say that's much clearer than what's in the commercial...

No-one's perfect and no-one's better than anyone else - we're all just different individuals with different strengths.

I have a very basic sense of humour and find the simplest of things funny. But, do you know what?

      That makes my life fun!

Yes, I laugh at something someone else does, but I laugh harder at my own goofs and mistakes. That doesn't make me a bad person, because I laugh WITH others, not AT them and I don't have the attitude that I'm better than someone else.

Yes, my sense of humour might be basic, but I have another quality that's way above normal - that doesn't mean I look down on people who are average/below average in the area where I excel.

I won't apologise if my basic humour is beneath you, just as I wouldn't expect you to apologise that your ____ is of a lower level than mine.

I (and dare I presume others reading this thread) was simply enjoying something that someone kindly shared, which brought a smile to my face - that doesn't mean I think I'm better than the person requesting a refund.

I gotta be honest. I thought the thing shook itself and the muscle action was brought into play by trying to hold onto it while it shakes.

My husband has a kind of gyroscope thingy that works in that way that works on the forearm muscles. You hold it, it bounces around in your hand, and you try to hold on to it. It jerks your hand around.

I don't have one, but my friend's mother does. I saw it and was like wow, cool, I want to try it! I looked everywhere for the on button. When I saw there was no on button I thought it was much less cool.

Michael, I think sometimes it's possible to laugh at the misconceptions people have while taking note of the need to improve your instructions. I once advertised a party at a private language school from 9 - 2 and at 9 a.m. a student turned up asking where the party was. I thought it was funny but the time on every party poster from then on was 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. I think it comes down to reasonable assumptions. In the case of the party, the poster said there was alcohol and there was nothing about lessons being cancelled in the morning. In the case of new (technology) products that will be bought by all and sundry I think you cannot explain enough. I've said this before a few times; a lot of the people on this forum don't know how to teach and they don't know how to explain - they blame everything on the stupidity/laziness of their students. That's something I've also come to learn over the last few years too.

I think the key is in the style of writing, so as not to patronise the reader. But, get the style right, start with the most basic first step and the results will be good.

I've unpacked boxes in the past, not knowing something was concealed, or packed separately, and then spent 5 minutes looking for that xx bit that wasn't with the rest - I wouldn't have been offended if the instructions were....

      1. Unpack the main xx from the box before locating the yy which is taped to the underside/ packed separately in zz location.
