What's most profitable in Internet Marketing?

I read Jeremy sharing tips on succeeding at Amazon - making $1000/month - and really liked them. But it got me thinking about the feasibility of the business.

Here's my background:

I build my own software and sell it online. And always wonder how profitable it would be to sell small items. I am doing about $16k/month in about two years from start. Pretty consistently, building niche software. And am now creating more general software that could take me to wider audiences (increasing the revenues further).

I've thought about selling affiliate products, tried with Google AdSense first, and was happy to make $100/year from my blog a few years ago.

I did the Product Launch Formula (Jeff Walker) and felt it's always better to sell your own products. That gives you most profits. And then it's about building your list and maintaining a good relation with list members. That way you can promote other high value affiliate products and make more money.

How would Amazon / ClickBank compare with all this? Are they the stepping stones to test IM waters before one migrates to higher value items?

How have others done it?

What's most profitable in IM?

Look forward to your inputs!

Agree, this is what you should try to do always.

I've often read that Amazon is a good "starting point" for IM but really, I don't see why it can't be used to generate a full-time, growing business. Obviously you need multiple eggs in many baskets, but Amazon is making a decent, yet small, stream for me.

If you're currently making 16k/month though, I would start Amazon intending it to be a low-maintenance slow burner for at least 12 months. Good luck!

Edit: As for Clickbank - I've tried it and had zero success. I just find all the products and landing pages to be rubbish.

    Anything can work.

I make over $1k a month from Amazon but from selling one book. You don't have to make it hard.

    LIT = Learn, Implement, Teach...

And that formula is via Tim Atkinson.

Teach means create your own stuff and how peeps how you did it.

Which means you need to get results first and then teach people exactly how you did it. They love that stuff man, teach it all day and you will sell lots of your own stuff.

Amazon isn't just a stepping stone - it can be a huge money-maker. It's also the perfect complement to whatever else you're doing, as you can make niche sites that require very little maintenance and will pull in money for years with no effort after the initial promotion. I would imagine the same goes for Clickbank, in some niches at least, though I have very little experience with that myself.

Yeah - Who can say "a massive high-traffic site that people do a LOT of repeating buying from".

Why would you need Amazon or Clickbank? You're already selling your own products. Just keep doing it and scale the things up!

      Thanks for your feedback guys.

Like Nick mentioned, I think it's best for me to stay on my own products right now. Doing any new strategy will take time and efforts. And it's probably better to spend them on what's already working.

I think Amazon can be a good complement when you have a lot of traffic.

Surprised that ClickBank hasn't worked well for people. It seemed like it would be doing very well.
