What's with the word 'Secrets'?

I recently did a survey to choose a name for an information product I'm working on. The participants had to pick from 5 name options. All the options were in this format:

[Key Word][Another Word]

The name that came in first (by a high margin) is in the format [Key Word] Secrets. It has almost twice the number of votes of the name that came in second.

I'm curious: what makes people respond so well to a title with the word 'Secrets' in it?

PS: this will probably encourage even more marketers to use this word in naming stuff.

It's curiosity. What's the secret? I need to know the secret! that triggers them to buy the product.

"Secrets" suggest insider knowledge, privileged information that only a few know, and thus putting the recepient of that information in a position of superiority over other, and perhaps leading to some financial or other advantage.

I'd tell you but I'd have to eat this thread afterwards.

But seriously, everyone wants to be an "insider" with "insider" info.

The same reason the phrase "it isn't your fault" is so popular.

"Secrets" have been used for some time in many areas of marketing...I wonder if it's overused sometimes but my testing too has revealed it still has power! I don't want to feel like I'm missing out on something, so that word "secrets" make me think I need to know it if I want to be in the cool crowd.

It's because people always want something easier than they've already got and they believe others are keeping it secret from them.

Agreed, a "secret" is much more appealing than focus, knowledge and perseverance, those things require effort!

I think it's akin to the "button".

^lol so true. at the early stage, you kinda start believing that all this IM thing is just a big con and only a few ppl are actually making money because they're selling you stuff so now they're selling their 'secret'.

Kinda found out the hard way haha

I think it's just basic marketing and psychology. With normal knowledge, you can find it in a ton of places (especially online), but if it's a *secret* - then you can only find it right there. Plays on people's curiosity.

If someone were to ask us "can you keep a secret?" would you say... I am not interested to know... hell, noooooo! we all want to know the "secrets".

HOWEVER... in IM I have learned -like many others- that when you read a sales page that promises the "secret", it probably is something you already know about it. Presented in a more glamorous way. So it puts me off completely

When I use it, it's meant as a synonym for "I am sharing information inside my product that you may not yet know", but that's rather clunky when compared to "secret".

    All the best,

Its one of those powerful words that works well in an offer or sales page. Now you are aware of it, you will probably see it is used quite often.

I think it is still a good word to use and still attracts me.

    Forget why.

    Create the product.

    Sell it.

Create another one named [Keyword] Secrets.

    Buy something nice for yourself.

    ;-)

Unless of course if the product is about why people prefer the word secrets in a title.

To me, "secrets" sounds like "spam".

    But that's just me.

There are definitely a lot of decent products out there which claim to tell you the "secrets".
