I neEd help on how to transfer a site after selling on flippa

i really know its easy to transfer a domain name, but i am having problems transferring the content and host from my server to the buyers server. i cant keep paying hostgator to do this that is why am asking. please i need your help. thanks a million

      What kind of platform are you using?

      You may just want to get reseller hosting for what you're doing - that way you can get paid when they go to renew... also it's a lot easier to just hand off.

        While there are programs out there to help you move a wordpress site they are really easy to move manually. Honestly you should be able to do it in less than 30 mins the first time as long as your internet connection does not suck.

        copying the site

        1. copy all the files and folders to a folder on your hard drive
        2.. Go to phpmyadmin in your cpanal (or if you do not have cpanel whatever program is used to admin your database)

        Check the box that says export to a file and then export the database saving the file to your computer with the files.

        Starting new site

        1. Go into cpanel and create new database and user using the same info found in the config.php file.

        2. Go to phpmyadmin and import the sql file that you exported a couple of minutes ago.
        3. Check and make sure that the first part of the username and database name in the config file are the same at the new location.

        It will look like the following dave_databasename

        If the first part is not the same edit the config file so it matches.

        4. upload all your files.

        5. Done

        Now you can check and see if it is working by editing your hosts file to point the the domain at its new location. Once you are sure everything is good to go have the new owner change the nameservers.


        I have to agree with the previous poster though. Get yourself a reseller hosting account and give the first months hosting free with the sale and make moving the account the sellers responsibility if they want to move it after that.

        Chances are a lot of them will not bother and you can start receiving hosting payments in addition to selling the site which will up your profit margins. Plus if they do decide to move the site it is their problem not yours.

          This is a very long process....

          Here:

          1. login to admin and export the files (under tools)
          2. Login to FTP and send a copy of theme to your machine
          2. tell customer point the domain to customer's hosting server
          3. tell the customer to install wordpress in his server
          4. import all files to newly installed wordpress
          5. install theme
          6. configure (plugins, seo, permalinks, etc)
          7. Asked customer to request domain transfer and send him the authorization code....

          no need to login to phymyadmin and doing these etc (not user friendly to most people)

    Things to do and keep in mind when transferring domains:

    - Make sure that there is no ICANN restriction on your domain. This is typically found with newly registered ones, although there are other cases as well.

    - Make sure your new host has a domain transfer feature, and find a review or two about it.

    - Get the authorization code from your previous webhost early on so that you can give it to your new webhost

    - Make sure you tell your previous webhost to release any holds or restrictions on your domain. At this point you can let them know why they suck and why you're leaving. Salt in the wound.

    - Point the nameservers towards your new webhost. You can request them from the new webhost, or some display them openly.

    - Make sure to have your website saved! They typically download in an SQL file, that can be zipped into a GZ file as well. Just another cover on it is all. This file can later be uploaded to your newly created database with your new webhost (you may have to create a new table as well within). Or uploaded directly into the FTP server. Whichever they recommend.

    - Overall, prep is a good thing when switching. A lot has to happen, there's a waiting period, and the companies take their sweet time in the process. Make sure you get from them what you need and make sure that they are doing what you ask of them. It's a long process and can get technical, but do these things and you should be in good shape.

    - I recommend to double check all of your actions with your new webhost's support center. Turn on your bluetooth headset, call them up, and create a list of what they tell you their custom process is to fully switch.

    And.....YOU'RE DONE! Fun switching, really.
