What is your single best benefit to working at home?

Hello warriors,

I'm new to this forum and just looking to start a thread of encouragement and motivation. Probably one of the most difficult parts of working from home is the isolation and then self-doubt begins to creep in. I've never been traditional though and prefer to do things my own way! Still it's hard when you feel doubt from your friends.

Please share some inspiring stories of success with me or mention just one of the goals you have accomplished from working at home, I'd love the support!!

Thanks a million,
kurvaravee

Thank you for asking this question. It is good to think of these things so we all know WHY we are doing what we are doing besides the motivation of money. For me, I have a lifelong dream to be an actor - I have dabbled in it but not reached the success I dream - not yet. This is my personal motivation to work hard and make money online. I will start my own production company and write scripts like i have done before - it seems to be the way to do it now - instead of waiting for people to discover me i will create my own opportunities. To answer your question more specifically my single best benefit from working at home would be the freedom to do everything ive listed above.

I've been working from home now for 6 years and it's tough at the start, I missed adult interaction to begin with and it is real easy to get distracted.... It's important to get out of the house frequently to help you switch off and get away from the laptop...

I do feel looking back though I'm more productive home-based however still miss that interaction from time to time..

  • Working at home can certainly create isolation and the lonely-wolf-syndrome. The thing is that since you're 100% self-sufficient and independent, your life can easily become a one-man show (both professionally and socially).

It's super important to FORCE yourself to have a social life after work, during the weekends, etc. Otherwise it's pretty easy to find yourself regularly working in front of your computer on a saturday evening, and that's not good.

As long as you manage to keep a healthy balance, working at home (and its independence) is a fantastic thing.

On the other hand, working at home allows you to be with your family (kids especially) most of the time. And I thank God for this great opportunity working at home.

To me, the best reason for me to work from home is to be a stay at home mom and still bring in an income. I cannot hold most normal jobs because of my back problems so I was very happy to find IM. Not only can I make great money, but I work for myself and can plan my workload myself, and I can balance it with my home life. The only drawback I have found is the fact the market fluctuates. Sometimes business will be slow. Luckily since I provide a service I can easily make sure my bills are paid even if I am not making many sales.

First welcome to Internet Marketing world

One of the most important thing you don't want to do is get distracted by other people. You must concentrate and stay focus on your goal. When I first started 4 years ago. I had no ideas where and how to start. I had to learn everything myself. I actually took action and bought an ebook to read. Back then, I told myself that I did not want to work for other people but myself that why I chose Internet Marketing. The first ebook I ever read that kickstarted my online business career was about Ebay.

After I read the ebook, I immediately started to implement the strategy. But since I'm new and didn't have much experience, I failed. I did give up on that method as I realized that it's not for me.

I have tried many methods, but most of the time I failed to find the real potential in it. Some of my failed methods are even too embarrassed to tell so I will not discuss it here But a few months back, that's where I finally find the method that actually make me money. It really excited me. Now I'm starting to rake in 4 figure profit every month. It's a matter of scale things up. Hopefully by the end of this year, I will be able to quit my job and do whatever I want

Note: one of the reason for my success was that I used "IMAGINATION"

I just want to say that everything is possible. You don't have to be smart to make a lot of money. I'm not smart either, but I stayed focus, concentrate, and use my imagination to reach my goal. That's the 3 keys to my success today. It's a true story.

      Great question!

Being a college student, I don't have a family, child, etc. to benefit from staying home with. I have four other guys in the house who are rather messy really. But I made a quick list of why I love working from home (or wherever I want, really) so darn much.

      1. No boss (plan your own workday, monitor yourself, set priorities)
      2. No income ceiling (effort reflects pay)

      3. Self-satisfaction (you create the business, you get the credit)
      4. Work with people you like (no difficult coworkers, no office politics)
      5. Flexibility (work whenever you want)
      6. No commuting (save time and money)
      7. No office expense (quicker profit)
      8. Security (no layoffs, no downsizing, no getting fired from a terrible job in the first place)
      9. Tax deductions (home office, car expense, medical insurance, phone, entertainment, travel, education, etc)
      10. My laptop is my office. It's rather portable.

I don't know about you, but those are some pretty reassuring reasons to stay in this business for me! Play to win, it works if you do initially. It can be discouraging and overwhelming. Create a low information diet with a sharp focus and a purpose, and don't stop.

I'd love to help you however I can if you get discouraged, find my link below if you need to talk. Also listen to Jack Johnson. He gives off an "I work at home vibe" to me, and has very soothing and chill music

I made the decision to work from home 6 years ago and i have never regretted it,i have to admit the 1st couple of months i did have some thoughts about was it a wise move the main reasons being missing my old work friends etc.I was in the comfort zone as they say that i was getting a regulat pay cheque every month, payed holidays and payed sick leave but that all changed.

I guess i would describe it as excitement but alot of fear rolled into one,but after 6 months it started to all come together and then started my own daily routine, discipline is a must when working from home as it can be very easy to skip the time you should be working to doing things like shopping.

It can be very daunting but also can be the the best move you can make.it worked well for me.

The main benefit for me was staying at home with my son when he was a baby.

Now that he's in school though I've fallen out of love with working at home, and decided to get an office instead.

I'm much more productive NOT working at home. I still have the benefit of being able to work my own hours, and come and go as I please though.

      Hi,

Well..benefits are unlimited...i will tell you a few:

For me,the most exciting thing is to have the office few steps away from my bed and this means save on gasoline.

Second, you can work in pajamas if you want. You don't need to buy power suits and dress up every workday.

Third, if you work for someone you'll never become rich (i'm talking about the average work, not the president of the fed); with the internet instead you have a great earning potential.

Well those above are my favorites, then you have great tax advantages, you can reduce stress, you can take care of your family and many others!

Though everyone has different reasons to work from home, i think one of the biggest reasons in having one's own business is the freedom it gives you in terms of time and your income potential.

Working at home can be challenging at times as you really need to concentrate to squeeze quality working time i.e. productive time but the benefits far outweigh the benefits of a regular job.

One most important thing anyone working from home needs to do is form or be a part of a mastermind group. It always helps to be in company of smart people.

Simple... Internet Marketing allows *anywhere* to be my home - mine just happens to be in Brazil, but even then I like to take off for a few weeks here or there and take the notebook and a 3G card - that's all that's needed... Like last month when we went to Foz de Iguaçu...

That "freedom" allows our family much more time together. Even though I usually work on our trips, it's really nice to be able to take them. A working vacation is still much better than a desk job any day!

And just the other day my daughter took her first steps and I was there to see it... that's what it's all about for me!

I agree. That's my #1 benefit too: geographical flexibility. I love being able to toss my laptop into my backpack, grab my passport and my Master Card, and I can relocate ANYWHERE in the world within 24 hours.

      It's the ultimate freedom.

Whilst that might not be the single best benefit...

I have to admit to having done that a time or too.

I think though it's just an aspect of the true freedom you have. Your life can now exist from anywhere at anytime. You could literally pack your bags tonight and be "working" from the other side of the world tomorrow(give or take time zone variations and distance).

But I won't lie, it makes you a bit lazy...and in Colin's case (a little bit intoxicated)

I keep an actual office nearby for when I need to get serious. (of course I do have a mini-fridge there too, for six packs of uhm soda.)

My positive is also a negative...

I get to spend more time now with my daughter and do things like taking her to school, which I love. However, drawing the line between 'work' and personal time can be tough. I have to be super-disciplined in order to get my daily tasks done and my daughter who is only two and a half sometimes doesn't get this...understandably.

As long as you can setup a routine and manage your time well between work and relaxing then working from home out beats the daily commute.

The benefit of working from home is the time is yours. You have no boss commanding and giving a lot of tasks. If you are a mom, working at home is very beneficial. You can take care of your children at home while working.

For me working into home was about self worth, I'm disabled and pretty much housebound when hubbie isn't home, which is most of the time cos he works long hours

I was starting to feel like a 'waste of space' as I couldn't even manage a little housework or anything, but then I discovered the internet and started chatting and making friends very quickly realising that I could do something useful! So I decided to take a look around at a way to make money and discovered internet marketing. Now I'm not useless anymore and my self-esteem is way better.

So far we've been on a cruise and have a convertable and suprisingly my health is even improving finally!!!

But the most exciting bit for me is showing my extremelly sceptical ('you can't make money online') hubbie the paychecks!! He's jaw hits the ground every time so funny, and THAT'S enough motivation for me to keep going lol!!

I used to think that working at home would make me feel isolated, but as it turns out that in the daytime I would meet other work at home people.....whether it would be at the dog park or at the local Starbucks. Eventually over time, we would meet regularly and have our version of "meeting at the watercooler".

If you feel isolated when working at home, take some to get out there and meet others. Better yet, look into meetup.com as there are probably lots of opportunities to meet with others!

A while back, I was made redundant and my age made it extremely difficult to get another interview, let alone a job. I was seriously in danger of ending up on the scrap heap.

For those facing that situation, I can say that, for me working from home has given me a purpose.

With web conferencing, with individuals and with groups, I can get all the interaction with others that I need.

The income, to start with was not great, but it is getting better.

I don't have to carry out the orders of a boss, even though I think they are stupid.

The downside of working from home is getting away from work.

I'm single and I work from home full time. Upside: I can keep the place clean while I work, that way I don't have to hire someone, and it saves time not having to "cleanup after I come home from work." The time saved not having to commute is also good.

Other than that, since I do have to be home 8 hours per day because it is a job, it sucks - especially the isolation and hours spent stuck at home.

Getting a nap whenever I feel like, watching a movie whenever I feel like, taking a shower whenever I feel like, going for a drive whenever I feel like, the list is endless....

However as the OP asked a single benefit - flexibility of work time. Priceless.

    • My single best benefit to working at home is also having an office 4 miles away.

I love being able to get up at 5am, "commute" down a flight of stairs, make some chai and get started while the world is hushed and non-work demands on my time are few. If for some reason I don't get that early morning time I'm a grump the rest of the day.

But later in the day I need fresh air, society and a change of scene, so I work from my office in the afternoon. I have a 14 x 24 space in a small building on a popular retail shopping/restaurant street. The office is great for storing inventory and other materials I don't want cluttering the house and doesn't cost that much more than an actual storage unit -- just one with DSL, computers and my photography set-up. (Yes, weirdly, storage units in this area are expensive but commercial rents continue to drop...). I also love the idea that I have a ready refuge and a place to meet vendors or customers if need be. The only drawback is that there I can't play music as loud as I'd like.

The BEST thing is that I can stay home with my sick kid without asking some stranger ("boss") if it's ok.

I'm not at fulltime with IM but every time I think about giving up that's what I think about. I'm grown, I'm not asking Massa Boss if I can go to the beach or sleep an extra few hours.

There are lots of benefits of working online like working whenever you want, working on whatever you want, being your own boss etc. I am not saying working at home, because when you work online as an internet marketer you will not be bound to your home anymore. And this is the best benefit of working online in my opinion.

Working online at your home surely requires some self discipline, motivation, dedication, taking action regularly, and it might seem like a difficult task for newcomers. Actually, it is if you don't set up your mind and work hard towards your goals. But at the end the rewards will be worth it.

Except for one year when I lived and worked abroad in an exotic job, I have worked at home for more than 30 years now.

I feel sorry for people who may make more money than I do but have very little freedom. For example, my dentist makes money only when he goes to the office every day, five days a week, 50 weeks a year. Yes, he can travel, but he almost fell over when he found out I spent four months in Hawaii this year.

I do not have to account to anyone for my time. Almost all of my work is exactly what I choose to do, on my timetable. I can (and do) take off in the middle of the day to go swimming or snowshoeing, depending on the season. I don't have to dress up or suffer from traffic. When there is bad weather, I do not need to get stressed out because I don't have to fight it to get to my job.

The only disadvantage I feel of not having an office where I go to work, and it's a tiny one, is that I miss out on seeing or hearing about other people's cool gadgets that they bring to work.

I should mention that I'm a pretty intense introvert and I'm glad to avoid most of the water cooler chatter that some people need for their mental health.

Sing it, sister. It *is* nice to be able to frame social interaction on one's own terms and not be forced to overhear someone relating the entire episode of their favorite stoopid reality show in excruciating detail.

Aren't there any other devout people-haters here?

Oh, okay. I don't necessarily hate people, though I'm exceptionally introverted and just find working alongside others, in person, to be exhausting and largely frustrating. It's the same with all dealings with others, really, for the most part, but at least when it's not a mandatory part of your job you can usually pick and choose when, where and for how long you're around people.

For me, working on my own in isolation is pretty much the difference between happiness and extreme depression.

The biggest benefit is time leverage. I think most people who have jobs spend at least 20% of their time on getting ready for work, commuting to work, commuting home in traffic back home. Its wasted time really. If you don't have control of your time then you are essentially slaving away 5 days to get 2 days free. When you work from home if you schedule yourself correctly you can work 2 days and take 5 days off.

Oh and avoiding the supermarket line. I never go to the store, gym @ 6pm I go when there is nobody there. Which is another time saver.

I'll never have any regrets about the time I decided to do this full-time.
