What to make of this ?

I built a couple of static sites earlier in the year and then lost interest and have been working on non IM things since, however something interesting has happened to one of the sites.

The site I built to monetise with adsense has gravitated to the middle of page one on google American servers, in fact the index page is there and a sub page. I find this quite surprising as there are 3.6M results returned and I've done nothing to promote the site other than a couple of articles way back and added about one new page of content per month.

It's an extremely plain site which is deliberate as I believed that it would encourage clicking, however as the earnings were pathetic, last month I removed the adsense and tidied the site a little.

Traffic is painfully low but growing at approximately 30% per month, but an odd thing is that the main country of source seems to alternate on a monthly basis between the UK and US ?

The irony of this is that one of the main reasons I lost interest is that it appeared so much work to try to get a site to rank on page one of google and I didn't believe I could do it, now it's happened without me trying.

Of course the other side of the coin is that I need a reasonable amount of targeted traffiic to generate any income, which I don't currently have, but it does seem to be building slowly without me doing any work, again all a little strange.

Anyway what I've decided to do is to let the experiment run and if the traffic builds to say three times current level then I'll try introducing some monetisation by means of amazon affiliate products. Even that won't be simple as I'll have to script something to cater for the different countries.

Anyway I'm open to comments/suggestions.

getting to the front page for longtails is actually really easy... but yeah, I find it odd that your traffic alternates from UK to US from month to month, don't know what to make of that.

I guess that's how it works sometime. Build a fancy pretty looking website with all the massive SEO "artwork", and never see the first page. Or, create a plain simple static website, and get it picked up by Google. Why? Simple! Because it looks (and is) natural.
