Do GiveAways Work To Build A List?

14 replies
Has anyone had success in building their list using JV Giveaways?

There is a lot of work involved -- creating gifts, filling out forms and getting signups. It is not that I mind the work (nothing is achieved without it) but I guess I am wondering if it pays off in the end. I have not been in but a couple and the results have not been spectacular.

Any suggestions?

Carol

    Ask yourself. Have you ever executed a sign-up just because of the promised gift? If I should answer this question, the answer is: yes, very often.
    But it will depend on your topic / niche.

      Oh yeah... I think it works quite well.. over my 8 mailing lists/sites I get several hundred subscribers per day and every one of them is incentivized to some extent.

      I like what seobacklinkfinder wrote above as well - how many times have you given your email address away for something that was incentivized vs. just signing up for a mailing list because you wanted more email? yup, thought so.

    I give stuff away to get signups to my mailing lists.

    IE: www.LinkCloak.net | www.FloatingPopup.com

    I've had some success but I never promoted the sites to get more traffic.

      You don't give away your email for nothing, that's common sense. You have to give something away.

    Yes and no.

    It depends on three things:

    (1) the offer / audience match;

    (2) truly remarkable value in what you give away;

    (3) having a plan and a follow-up process for those who sign up (keep them in a separate list with a nurture process at least until the first purchase;

      Yes it does work, the amount of signups will differ from each event, but if you upgrade you can put in more gifts, upto 5 in some cases and this usually results in more optins and you can also put up special offers, which if they are good quality at a good price usually results in a sale or 2.

      If you have a unique gift to giveaway this helps as well.

      In most giveaways you will need to promote the event as then your gift will be higher on the list and again potentially get you more signups, if you dont promote in some cases your gift will be removed from the event after a couple of days.

      Of course, if you run a giveaway then you will get even more signups

      Agree. Especially #3. Unless you have a rock solid plan to follow, building a list can turn into a nightmare pretty fast.

      And then we have the natura issues with Email Management Companies: a bad list, high spam complaints... you know the drill.

      So if you're going to build one, build it properly.

      People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

    I'm sure it works but are the list members mostly freebie seekers or do they actually buy stuff? I haven't used that method so I don't know.

    you just need to offer immense perceived value. perceived is the key word there. if the visitor doesn't see value in it off the bat, they won't sign up no matter how good your gift is. you could have a crappy product and still get the opt-in if you put it in its best light. it is a hard thing to do but just ask yourself "what is my audience looking for and what is valuable to them?"

    I think that giveaways are probably the general way that people build lists. It definitely works.

    I've done well with them, but most of my gifts have been
    audio recordings that I've done.... repurposing radio
    shows, etc. so not that much work.

    Offering a higher quality gift makes it more likely that
    you also start the relationship off with them actually
    listening to you.

    Usually, they offer an inexpensive upgrade where you
    can contribute more than 1 gift. I almost always take
    that so that I can build up to 5 lists from the same
    traffic, funneling each list member down a very specific
    path based upon what they downloaded.

    It's important not to just dump them into your regular
    newsletter, but to send them a few follow-ups based
    upon their specific interests.

    I think that perhaps the most important part of these
    free giveaways for me is how well-run they are. Some
    people do a horrible job, and they usually deliver
    terrible results. Others are well-managed and I'm
    usually pleased with the results.
