How to start building a list?

Greetings my fellow warriors!
How are you?

I'm just starting out with IM, so I'm a complete beginner.. I have no list, but I have joined a program, that provided a squeeze page and what not.. So I have a way for people to opt-in to my list.. Now my question is: How do I get started building my list (preferably for free)? Adswapping was what I had in mind, but understandably people aren't really interested in swapping with some random guy, who has absolutely no people in his list (even though I of course would multiple-send and stuff to match their clicks).. So what would be some other good ways to get your list started.. I would like to get to about 100 subscribers somehow, so it will be easier to find adswap partners

Any help and suggestions are much appreciated, thanks in advance.
-Daniel

    Hey Daniel,

Best way IMO is to do a little keyword research and find a keyword that is within reach and has a decent amount of searches in Google per month. Rank your landing page for that keyword and them offer a free ebook (easy to create) that directly relates to this keyword and preferably answers a question that the majority of people searching that keyword are asking. The catch is that they need to sign up to your free newsletter series to get the free report. The newsletter series should also be related to your main keyword and searchers should get some benefit from staying on your list.

Have a think about that and formulate a strategy.

    Good luck with it

    Hi Daniel, welcome...

There are a lot of ways to build your list. Some no cost solutions would be to submit some content to article directories and ezines. You could also make instructional videos on your niche and upload them to various sites online.

However, many of these "free" traffic generating methods require that you invest in your time. PAID advertising usually gets results so much faster.

I would start by creating a press release. Write about what you're doing from the perspective of a reporter, not a sales person. You can create free press releases, but the paid ones are much more powerful.

Also consider PPC advertising like Google Adwords and Facebook. When you get a little bigger advertising budget going, you can start testing out banner ads.

Just pick one or two strategies at first and do only those methods until you master them. Once you've got a few traffic systems in place, then start learning something new.

Greatness is difficult to appreciate from close up. The great mountain on the horizon is only the ground when you are standing on it.

    Hey guys!
Thanks for the quick responses! Problem with creating stuff is, that I kinda already have a site, and editing it to get to the top of google for a certain keyword seems impossible, as it's pre-made... Investing time is not an issue as I have a few months holiday now.. I'd like to stay away from paying for now as I paid quite a lot for the program itself and for a domain name..
    Thanks again for the help

      Hi Daniel,

      Congratulations for taking action!
Building a list right from the beginning is a good start.

Hmm... I recommend you take one sentence (or phrase) from your pre-made page and make a Google search for this phrase in quotes.

It may turn out that dozens -- if not hundreds -- of identical pages are already online and fighting for good rankings. That's the problem with those "pre-made" pages... Easy to set up, but impossible to rank.

If so, learn how to create your own squeeze pages... it's a useful skill, anyway.

One way to kickstart a list is to think of something that you can give people in your niche for free. This can be done with PLR content (Private Label Content) if you can't come up with something yourself. Lets say your in the diet niche. Do a search at google for plr content. Buy a diet ebook from a plr site that gives you the rights to give it away for free. Now you have something that people in your niche want that you can give to them for signing up to your mailing list.

Before you do this you should have some autoresponder emails setup to send them information when they join your mailing list. You can build autoresponders from plr content also if the particular plr offer allows it. Every plr product has different acceptable uses that you can use the plr content with.

This is probably the easiest way to start a mailing list. The more enticing your free offer is the better chance you have of signing people up to your list. Once it's all in place and running you can go back and replace it with better emails, better offers, etc. Good luck!

    Decide your niche.

Research the top 10 most pressing problems/questions people have in that niche (use forums).

Create a special report or video on how to solve one or more of those issues.

Make a squeeze page and collect optins with aweber.

Drive traffic to that squeeze page using a variety of methods- video, guest blog posts, articles, banner ads, forum links, facebook, JVs, PPC, etc.

Always be testing the squeeze page and offer

Quick way to get about 100 subs on your list...

    Create a Free WSO...

Granted this will cost you $40 but you will have a list to start doing adswaps with...

You can also invest in a solo ad and get similar results...

The last free WSO I ran received over 80 subs and made $24 in sales... so I paid $16 to get over 80 subs... not a bad investment in my opinion... (the least successful one I have done got 60 opt-ins and the most successful one got over 200 opt-ins)

You can also barter and trade any skills you may have for solo ads...

There are so many answers to this, but the two I listed work well...

    Cheers and good luck

Incentivize the list for whatever type of people you want to sell to later

If you're looking for people who are willing to spend $500 on ebooks, maybe you should release a free eBook called "are $500 marketing guides worth it?" and require people to sign up to download it.

Then, when you're ready to go sell that expensive eBook, you've got a list of people who might contemplate buying them.

There are many ways to build a list. You just have to be very searchful. You can find with free of cost or with cost. It's up to you which one you like. Just be careful in choosing.

I don't do solo ads, or ppc or anything that I have to pay for, Instead I use free sources of traffic generation to my website, article marketing being #1 for me, video marketing, twitter and facebook, on my site I give away free training.

You can try traffic exchange. They will limit you for the pages submit. Create a squeeze page to capture your list building.

Make a free report-it must be quality
in the report add your link to your squezee page( with another free report).
Promote it via affiliate marketing, video marketing.

You promote the first squzee page, offering a freequality report, for opting-in . Now who opt-in may have list, but not a product, or he's thinking of getting subscribers like us. He will promote the product , will get subscribers, and when his subscribers click the link inside the report, he will probably opt-in on your list , if this goes viral, you can have over 1000-2000 subscribers in 1 month.

  • At the beginning, there's no better way that to pay other folks in your niche for some Solo Ads. Sure, it's not free, but it's worth paying at the beginning in order to gain momentum, at least enough so you can start doing Ad Swaps.

I really love this forum! You guys are great!
Building my own squeeze page probably is a good idea, will have to look into some html

This kinda makes me wonder what gives the most traffic.. what have you guys found to get you the most (and best quality) traffic: Search engine traffic or other means (like facebook marketing, articles, ad swaps etc.)?

Here are four squeeze pages I created that you can use...

These are generic so they will work in any niche, just add your details and autoresponder code and you'll be all set!

The squeeze pages are attached to this post. I am currently using one of them and it is converting at almost 60%...

      Enjoy,
      Coby

P.S. nothing sneaky in the zip file, not even a link to my site! Just four squeeze pages

  • hey to create squeeze pages you can use a free html editor and that will keep you from having to learn html. however you can also find free training on writing html. just google it. and it is pretty easy to install the autoresponder code in your page. you just copy and paste it into the place you need it to be in your source code. If you need help with it you can pm me too. I have done this lots of times.
