Free Domains Question

Hey guys,

I actually searched for this for a while and didnt find what I was looking for, so I am going to ask here .

Do you think it is a good idea for someone who is totally new or completely broke to get free domains like co.nz, co.cc or .tk. just to test the water first before making a plunge.

Another question is do those domains get indexed and ranked as easy (or hard) as their .com counterparts?

Regards

I think it's better than using other people's subdomains (i.e. not having their own domain-name at all), but worse than anything else.

You can buy a .info domain-name from GoDaddy for $1, which is clearly better (actually for several reasons) than using a .co.cc or a .tk domain-name.

If $1 is too much for someone to test the water, maybe they shouldn't be plunging at all?

For "testing out the water" using a free domain is a wise move. Later when you take the plunge you will have a better idea on your domain name requirements.

      Do three jobs on Fiverr.

      That'll give you $12.

Use that to buy a .com.

There's certain investent in web dev/marketing you should avoid:
        • get rich quick eBooks
        • crappy feeder traffic
        • spammy backlinking services

But, then there's some stuff you CANT avoid
        • hosting
        • domains
        • essential dev tools
        • essential seo tools

you should just shell out for a .com, or maybe ask around and see if anyone's willing to GIVE you one that's expiring soon and they don't want anymore.. you may get lucky

I've tried skating by on free domains (many years ago) and it was a disaster.

Save a little bit and try to cash in on cheap hosting and domain registrations. Having complete control over your venture is worth the initial investment. If you absolutely do not have it to spare, wait and try to save up a little money. I've found that trying to start up anything (even a small new website) when you have no extra money can be a huge mistake.
