Keeping a blog from not being live?

I have a static site on a hyphenated domain. This site has a few keywords ranking but nothing major (maybe 20 visitors a day). I now have the non-hyphenated domain and want to put it on WP. I really don't understand the 404 redirect thing so I plan to copy/paste from one to the other and not have the WP site live until finished so both sites will not show the same content. Can I do this and if so, how? Thanks.

  • Hi,

If you really don't want to do a 404, you can always use this to stop your blog from being live:

Search for Wordpress maintenance mode plugin.

I's a maintenance mode plugin that puts up a message to your visitors and that stops your blog from being active while you make changes etc.

Hope this helps and is what you're looking for.

I don't understand your question entirely but you can use an html redirect to redirect users from your hyphenated domain to your non-hyphenated domain.

    html redirect

setup a sub-directory on your domain.. like test or something.. install wordpress to that sub-directory.. once in the wordpress admin area.. click on privacy> then select the radio button that says

I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors.. hit save..

set up your wordpress blog.. do what you got to do..

when you are ready to move your wordpress to your root domain..

check out this tutorial.. Free Technology Tutorials » How to Move WordPress from a Subdirectory to Root and Vice-Versa

    it's the second video down..

as far as the redirect.. its not that difficult if your site isn't massive..

What I do is copy and paste each page url to notepad.. then I setup the redirects back to my homepage, you need to do this because if you move wordpress from the sub-directory to the home directory, you have to blow away your static site... just make sure in wordpress that the page names are the same as what you have in the notepad file.. once you move from that sub-directory to the root domain.. remove the redirects off those urls and all is back to normal.. well sort of.. you may see some dancing going on with the rankings... but if you do all this within a day.. it's not a big deal and you wont lose to much traffic etc., many people won't even realize what you are up to..

    hope this helps

just thought of something.. since its a static site.. your page names may have .htm or html on the end.. so you may need to just adjust the redirects to the appropriate pages on your new wordpress site..

    www.mysite.com/mypage.html -> redirect to www.mysite.com/mypage

If I understand correctly, you want to move a static HTML site onto WordPress. If this is the case, keep in mind that your page URLS will be different, because of the WordPress permalink structure.

Therefore you will need to redirect each of your existing pages to each of your new pages.

Can I just abandon the static site and do the WP site? Would it affect anything since it really has no traffic or ranking to speak of?

I don't understand what your asking? Do you want to use both sites, and create different content? Or do the hyphenated domain, and then have the non-hypenated one redirect to it? Or the other way around?

I just want to copy/paste everything from the static site into a WP site, then delete the static site.
