Can anyone offer advice on how long a membership subscription length should be? I remember reading a post a few months ago where someone mentioned not even offering month-to-month, only quarterly or yearly. Does this vary by price range? We're looking at a monthly fee of $17 and $47 and just wondering what kind of subscription packages we should be offering.

Well, I'm not quite ready to release all the details, but it's a software service for article marketers, blog marketers, ghostwriters, PLR sellers, and anyone else that deals with lots of content, to simplify and enhance their day to day activities.

For prices that low, you could get away with a quarterly or yearly subscription - but it also depends on the product/service.

Care to share it with us?

Take a look at your competitors to see how much they are charging.

Base your decision on that... chances are, they already tested this and have the best idea on what people are willing to pay for a service like this.

Thanks for the feedback. Two things:

      1) We don't really have any competitors. Some other software does PART of what we are offering, but no one package does all of it. Also, prices vary wildly from one time payments to monthly charges.

      2) I'm mostly asking about what subscription periods to offer. Should we do monthly, quarterly, 6 mo, 12 mo? Too many options is probably a bad idea. Just trying to get a sense for what others have had success with in the past.

    Hi Ben,

I have had two membership sites one is almost two years old the other was about 8 months old when I sold it.

    Neither site was service oriented.

Hands down the 3 month subscription has been the most popular. The one month subscription was the highest priced followed by increased savings for 3 month, 6 month and yearly subscriptions.

In order of sales highest to lowest.

    3 month
1 month (this one had the most churn, often subscribers would stay awhile, unsubscribe then come back in a few months)
    6 month
    1 year

    Hope that helps,
    Tom

What kind of discount were you giving for those lengths? I'm surprised that quarterly would work out being the most popular. I guess it could be a decent balance between risk and discount.

      One thing to think about....

I ran into trouble with the payment processors (Paypal and merchant processing) regarding prepaid subscriptions. They told me they'd process a 3 month, but nothing longer. "Risk mitigation" for chargebacks.

That's strange. You can configure buttons for 12 months through the Paypal interface.

    20% for 3 months
    25% for 6 months
    30% for 12 months

Personally I don't sign up for many recurring memberships for a year other than hosting/auto responder simply because I usually forget to cancel if I'm no longer interested in the site or have found a better fit/deal etc.

That could be a factor I suppose.

I was a member of nicheology (excellent membership) for instance but eventually I had more content than time to put it to use so I canceled.
