Article directories are one type of website that lost a TON of ranking (and traffic) when Google came out with its "Panda" update. I suspect this is why they are not accepting new submissions at this time.

I do think article directories still have the power to boost once credibility in the eyes of Google. Specially those article sites with high page ranks. I can't imagine doing SEO without them.

Panda is what happened to them! I'm glad too! Now, in order to stand out, you've got to produce! No more duplicate content! No more adsense sites packed full of useless information.

That's not to say that a lot of really good sites didn't get hurt or suffer due to the update, I'm just saying that I never got into the whole article marketing/press release thing. I'm just too impatient.

Do you think that meaningful and quality blog commenting also got hurt by the Panda or is this getting ever better thanks to it?

I don't know. I think that blogging is still strong if you write well, but I'm not sure how well blog commenting is anymore. These days most bloggers have bog comments set to "no follow" for SEO purposes. I know that some say that "no follow" backlinks can still help your site, but I don't know for sure if they do.

I'm sure someone else will see your question and give you better advice. Personally I comment on blogs quite a bit. But only if I have something to say in direct relation to the post content. I use StumbleUpon like a mad man, and I stumble through blogs all day long and I comment on blogs that stand out. I could care less what their page rank is because I'm actually only commenting to either add my opinion or to comment on someone elses opinion. And sometimes I don't even fill out the URL field.

As explained by the above answers, article directories took a big hit to rankings and therefore article marketing is not as powerful as it once was.

There are still thousands of great article directories out there that haven't ceased business though so you shouldn't be short of finding some new ones that haven't stopped new sign ups or submissions.

Just remember to provide high quality unique content that links back to more high quality unique content and your efforts won't go to waste.

Blog commenting still works well, but blog posting works even better.

Things like social bookmarking, web 2.0, blog posts, press releases, etc still work extremely well when done ethically and with unique content that attracts visitors to it and provides quality to the searcher.

Spun rubbish won't get you anywhere.

What happened to them is they were hit hard by the "Giant Panda" after the algorithm change.I think this is a transitionary period for them to clean their mess.I reckon after the clean up they will have no choice but to accept new submission. But beware they will be more regarding about the quality of the content.

I think that we'll be looking at a Catch-22 situation if they do.

They'll regain power and importance by keeping out the kind of articles supplied by the folks that would rely on that power and importance. So the people who most want the backlinks and traffic from dumping massive numbers of subpar articles on the directories won't be able to get in. While the people who least rely on the directories for anything but access to those seeking content to republish will submit the most easily accepted articles.

I've started to view most directories as link farms and nothing more. Every now and again I'd like to post something without having to write it - I've trolled several directories and find nothing but basically trash. It's frustrating to waste almost or more time than it would have taken you to write something yourself then find nothing of quality sufficient to post. I'm glad they cracked down.

Article directories are just plain dead. Gone are the days of writing an article with very good content with a well optimized keyword phrase and hoping to rank well for a long time.

It's still possible in the short run, but it seems like every article I submit drops very quickly in Google.

You caught it right. After Google Panda web directories have got very cautious. Not only they deleting the poor stuff but also restricting what comes to their site. This is mainly with renowned ones coz there are still bunch of directories where nothing has changed
