What Does it Take To Develop a Site Like Digg?

I have a Question.

What do you need to have in place to create a social book mark site
similar to Digg? I have a few ideas that i would like to get going on
but need some more information from those of you who know your
stuff in this area.

Is this a huge undertaking, hard? Looking more for the technical
side of things like dedicated servers, site scripting etc. I am not
savvy in these area's

And....what would you estimate the cost to be for the development?

Thanks
Sean

Here's the software: Pligg Content Management System (CMS)

Requires a server with PHP and MySQL.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

So....do you just do a FTP transfer to your server and tweak like a regular site?

And since it is a free download....there are no other costs other than hosting and the Domain?

        EDIT

Would a hosting company work...such as Bluehost or Host Gator?

I'm sure Dana will charge YOU at least double her regular prices for the press releases. ;-)

Well, if Sean had been following my conversations on Twitter, he would have learned about Pligg yesterday. ;-)

What do you consider the good ol' days? Back when I had fewer followers and conversations, or back before Dana turned me against you? LOL!

Also check out Drigg - your Digg clone software, in Drupal uses Drupal as a back end a lot more powerful and easier to customize than Pligg IMHO.

To be honest if your trying to get as big as digg you need a unique idea.

    Innovate don't imitate.

I appreciate that.... The concept is the same but with innovation. So therefore I am looking for a higher level of customization. However, I do not
      want to convolute the process.

If you can do it with a canned app, jump on it. If you try to recreate something like Digg from scratch, you're looking at $10K-$20K worth of client/server programming. The basics are easy to do. It's all the little stuff under the hood that kills you.
