Virus Alert! Technorati Website

Went out to technorati.com to post a backlink and got nailed - the 2012 Windows Antivirus virus.

This is a mean one - I was using firefox (which is usually good at detecting threats) and immediately got a warning message that the virus was detected on technorati.com, but it was already too late.

This POS causes your browsers to close sporatically - even though I got the virus through firefox, IE also closes as well.

The first sign that you are infected is an official looking "Virus Detected" window that looks like the typical Windows virus alert, but it is actually put there by the virus itself. If you click the button to scan or remove the virus, it goes out to a website that will do even more damage to you.

Do not reboot your PC or close any programs! This will only make the virus harder to remove, as it will then act as a rootkit (rootkits are really nasty). Unplug your network cable, find another PC that you can use to do a google search, and google "fake Anti-Virus 2012" for advice on removing it. It will involve downloading 1 or 2 programs (probably MalwareBytes and Hijack This) and some sites allow you to upload the log files from these programs for them to analyze and advise you step-by-step how to proceed.

And for now, stay away from technorati.com! I'm sure they will address the issue soon, but give it till next week before you try them, unless you have reason to believe that it has already been resolved.

Just a heads-up
