Positive or Negative?

I have a question regarding the idea of offering "free reports" in order to obtain email addresses by getting people to opt in.

Based on your experience, do you have better success offering a report that focuses on a POSITIVE or a NEGATIVE.

For example:

"3 Secret Techniques to make $X,XXX dollars a day" would be a more positive title

OR

"3 of the biggest MISTAKES internet marketers make when selling a product" would be a more negative title

Thanks in advance!

I think if you're going to use a lot of negative copy, like in option 2, you should pad it with something positive, like "3 of the biggest mistakes marketers make, and how you can get RICH off of them"

Option#1 (positive) You'll get many eyes of newbie internet marketers since they believe these kinds of words. Intermediate and expert marketers know truths existing behind the words.

Option#2 (Negative) You'll get more attention of intermediate internet marketers because still they're doing mistakes and looking for solutions. Expert marketers don't have mistakes now and newbies believe that they are on right way.

Based on over 10 years of self-employed marketing
experience... I have no bloody idea which is the best
option. (And anyone else who thinks they know how
your market will respond to your offer is frankly just
      guessing).

I've ran multiple tests on positive vs. negative, pain
vs. pleasure headlines etc. and have seen mixed
results. A lot depends upon your visitors and your
      particular offer.

Rather than mass-debating the idea on a forum and
asking for opinions - do a split-test of each approach
and then you'll get the 100% right answer for your
      market.

The only opinions that count are those of the visitors
to your site who are in the market for your offer.

In general, people do more to avoid pain than they do
to gain pleasure, but that doesn't necessarily mean
that the negative 'mistakes' angle will work better in
      your case.

So, test it and see to be sure of getting the correct
      answer.

You can write a report that covers both the positive
and the negative but do a test of two different squeeze
pages (one with a negative emphasis, and the other
      one with the positive headline/title).

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun
