Someone wants to buy my domain name...

I registered the domain name "TotalTronics" about a year ago, A guy emailed me yesterday wanting to know If he could buy It, When I say a guy I mean the owner of a company again, called TotalTronics, His website - "totaltronics*DOT*nl" It seems like a professional company & he is rather inerested In using the .com.

Anyway, my question Is, how much should I sell It for? I've asked him to give me an offer, hasn't responded yet. My other question Is, how do I go about selling It, I use fasthosts, my domain Is on auto renewal.

I'm not up to speed on it, but there's a chance? that cyber squatting laws might allows him to grab it from you, you might investigate this before strong-arm negotiations take place.

Yea get him to make the first offer...

If it's a big amount you can split the cost of an escrow service, they hold payment until the whois shows the buyers name, you have to unlock the domains status in your registrar control panel to make it transferable, you may get a code that you give the buyer to authorize transfer, it's a little simpler of there's no change of registrar.

Are you making any money with the site or is it just sitting there? I have one site that somebody wanted to buy and it's one of my main sites for booking corporate gigs. That site is worth a lot to me so I wouldn't have sold it for less than $60,000.00.

On the other hand, if your site isn't making you anything, I think anywhere for $497-$1997 gives you a good ROI on something that cost you less than $10.

I'm getting these numbers from what I'm seeing in the domain flipping game as a good price range.

He has a chance from grabbing It? What do you mean? I pay for the domain name every year, It's In my name.

He's talking about the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act here in the U.S. in which trademark holders have "a cause of action against anyone who, with a bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of another's trademark, registers, traffics in, or uses a domain name that is identical to, or confusingly similar to a distinctive mark, or dilutive of a famous mark, without regard to the goods or services of the parties."

There are a lot of issues involved such as standing to sue and the proper jurisdiction to bring a lawsuit. If that company has an international trademark and you both reside in countries that have anti-cybersquatting legislations, it *might* become an issue. It's all very speculative, at best.

Practically speaking, it all comes down to money and time. How much is the domain worth to that company? Are they willing to pay you a reasonable price to avoid the time and effort of trying to take you to court (assuming they have a case)? Do you want to avoid potential problems in the future?

If you spend a lot of money with your site... then give the best price for your site to sell to that guy.

I just had this happen to me a few days ago. I posted a thread on it yesterday. I asked for an offer...... came back at 6-8k. Of course, I'd have to have the domain evaluated, for a charge, and most likely from a company that the guy is involved with. I'd say be careful, and post any reply you get from the guy, so the more experienced folks here can evaluate the response.

Whatever you do have him make the first offer. He called you not the other way around. If he does not get back to you he was not serious in the first place.

Second as already pointed out there are scams out there where all of a sudden they want you to pay for an appraisal. Do not fall for that, the domain is worth what he is willing to pay. If he wants some kind of appraisal done it is on him with no involvement from you at all.

Just because someone has a company name that's an exact match for the domain name does not automatically mean the domain name owner is in danger of cybersquatting. There are several other factors involved.

As for transferring the domain name, I recommend using Sedo's escrow service. I've used them before and they handle all the money and transferring the domain name - worth the amount they charge for the service, IMO.
