Not only fake ClickBank checks ... now

Many people have called out those marketers who use
fake screen-shots and images to show that their program
is bigger than it actually is.

Well what happens when even big TV networks do the
same?

It's not just the 'small guy' who want to make it
big, huh? The big guys want to stay big too!

Not much different from the laugh tracks that they've always used. Not surprised at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they use whole audiences that aren't really from that particular show, too.

The same thing came to mind when I read that first post. A lot of times us, the viewers, are aware of it. Image is everything and anything that can help improve that image will be used!

Some may argue that its unethical, but for the laugh factor, I don't think it is. One thing they (the show or whatever) can't do is make me laugh...no matter how much laughter is going on in the background, so though they may want me to think this show is funny as hell, the fact is if I don't think so, then it doesn't matter all the same.

      Just my two cents.

        Hi Ryan Rice,

Some may argue that its unethical, but for the laugh factor, I don't think it is. One thing they (the show or whatever) can't do is make me laugh...no matter how much laughter is going on in the background, so though they may want me to think this show is funny as hell, the fact is if I don't think so, then it doesn't matter all the same.
Not trying to pick on you, but to make a point -

I think that it depends on your perspective.

The conversation has gone from fake Clickbank cheques to photoshopped crowds of people designed to give the impression that more people showed up for a TV show, to false laughter tracks - with the conclusion that it doesn't matter.

As I said, I think that it depends on your perspective.

Would people enjoy playing (or watching sport) with others who continually tried to cheat?

Should people ignore the fact that their partner is continually cheating on them?

Would it not matter at all if everyone in society was totally dishonest and if deception was the most prized ability?

Do honesty and honour have zero value in a society?

Where do we draw the line and who decides where that line gets drawn?

For example, is it acceptable for marketers to be dishonest, but not acceptable for a married person to be dishonest regarding their fidelity to their spouse?

If so, why? What makes the difference?

Is it just as acceptable for Masterchef to pretend that they are more popular than they really are as it is for Fox to distort the news? If so, why?

Just trying to provoke some different lines of thought.

FOX news as been busted for talking about an event and using footage from another to make it look bigger than it was. Several times.

If you watch closely at a lot of crowds for shows, they angle camera shots and do quick glimpses to make them appear bigger.

LMAO, I had one lady tell me she was going to report me to Symantec and have me charged with defamation, because I told a bunch of people in a forum that norton was the worst anti virus program going. I did say a few other things, but I'll keep this PG reading lol

And the Transformers in the film weren't real!

Who cares. This show is for ENTERTAINMENT purposes only. They aren't selling you anything here. I'm not really seeing the connection between this and internet marketer's who inflate their numbers to garner more sales. The ratings of this show aren't going to dramatically increase because they "fixed" the audience to look bigger.

Love your posts RayDal but I'm just not seeing the connection here...

Why? Everyone is forgetting that this is TELEVISION show. An ENTERTAINMENT show at that.

People watch reality TV shows for the drama! Should we fire movie producers and directors because they cheat and make things seem as they don't appear.

      It's an ILLUSION.

A LOT of edits within television and film are absolutely terrible. If you've ever edited a home video you can easily tell where things are edited by the producers to make things appear how they want them... should we fire them too?

and they hide/chop what you are Not supposed to see.

Ok thats fine for an ENTERTAINMENT property. For business building thats the worst advice ever. Eventually the skeletons in your closet will be unveiled, at the most in opportune time as well.

Just look at how many people get outed in the WSO forum. Once outed your reputation is gone. To compare that to an ENTERTAINMENT property is asinine in my opinion.

Not trying to say you were, just in GENERAL saying thats the worst advice ever. I didn't get that from your post, so sorry if I made it seem that way with mine.

Regardless I'm still not understanding the connection. One is business and the other is ENTERTAINMENT.

And while entertainment is a business, the illusion of television and film should not be held to the same scrutiny that the OP seems to be implying. That is all I am saying.

The point is not about it being entertainment. It's about laziness. I don't have a budget, and I could think of a million ways to come up w/ a crowd without having that ugly hack job.

These shows build an audience because they are good at hiding their mistakes and edits. If I were in charge of this shows creation, I'd be mortified to find that such a crappy edit made it into the final cut.

        Reality show deception...

My friend's son was on one of the original episodes of the MTV show "Pimp My Ride". (that tv show shows someone with an old beater of a car, then MTV fixes it up and surprises the owner with the awesomely cool fixed up pimped up car)

A few highlights of how MTV manipulated things: First, they showed his car complete with a door dent, another door sticking when closing, only one hub cap, and ceiling fabric was hanging down. Turns out, that was all for show, to make for a dramatic "Before" shot, and none of that was actually wrong with his car. MTV intentionally tore the ceiling fabric and pulled it so it was hanging down about 12" plus they put the dent in the door and removed 3 of the hub caps.

Second, they showed the young man in his dorm room, as a starving artist, with his paintings on the floor leaning against the wall. Turns out that wasn't really his dorm room, it was the end unit of a motel room rented for the show. Other than the paintings, nothing in the room was really his, not even the boombox. MTV even went so far as to remove the bedframe from the motel room and put the mattress on the room floor for added drama. The only truth to that scene was the fact that he was indeed an artist, and that his "real" room did have a pile of dirty laundry on the floor : - )

When they surprised him with the newly fixed up, pimped up car, he was genuinely surprised. But they re-shot the surprise scene a half dozen times, asking him to act crazy-hold-your-head-and-spin-in-circles surprised and various other ways to act surprised. In the final airing they used a few seconds of his face from his original surprise, then they cut in scenes from the surprise reshoots.

It takes maybe 5 min. to copy/paste legit html stats, then do a numbers swap to make the stats impressive. Load it in your browser click the screencast record button, poof! live stats.

Watched a good documentary on pro wrestling, and learned that WWE wrestlers rehearse their matches, and some fighting sequences are choreographed.

Sidenote, the movie "The Wrestler" staring Mickey Rourke is a good story about an ex-superstar pro wrestler (once having toys depicting him), now living in a trailer and wrestling for peanuts in dives. The agents & managers have already worked out who is going to win the match. (and the season) It's interesting how before each match, the wrestlers briefly talk about what they're gonna do.... for example they might decide that wrestler A dominates, then falls behind and just when everyone is convinced he's gonna lose, in the final seconds he'll hit the other wrester with a folding chair to pretend to knock him out and win the match. In one locker room scene, one guy asks if it's okay if he uses an industrial staple gun on the other guy's chest (which he okays), explaining that its a real crowd pleaser.

I have thought long and hard about if I should post this.

I am also a close up magician and when I am booked for a gig at a function or a corp event I perform for them.

Am I a con man because I have them sign a coin and then have it bend using my mind even though the coin was bent without them knowing before they sign it?

Afterall my main goal in magic is to deceive my audience to let them think I have done something that I have not really done but given the illusion I have done it?

Of course not! as the value is that they receive entertainment as their ROI

On the otherhand if I am a financial planner and I show clients that I know what I am doing by showing them fake documents and fake proof I would be a con artist at best.

Would you be happy to see a DR that has never studied but printed up a fake doctorate to make you think he is a DR?

It is all quite simple really

  • Maybe people should think for themselves for a change. Maybe we can all stop being what someone else wants us to be.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

I have a cousin in California who worked for MTV on staff for their reality shows. he defended a lot of the 'twisting of facts' they do as necessary to create more drama!...which I thought was funny, since you may as well produce a drama (fiction) series then. His argument was the story was essentially true, all they do is enhance the elements around it.
