5 Stupendous Reasons Why Writing is Everything

Great Copy is the lubricating system for great marketing: Gary Halbert, Michael Fortin, John Carlton, Mr.Ogilvy, and all other copy writing greats will stand testimony to the fact that writing for the readers, communicating straight to their hearts, and invoking and triggering their emotions are all keys to great marketing. Without writing well, in a focused and easy-to-read manner, no one is going to sell a damned thing anywhere. Even if it does happen, it won't last. For each person out there selling something, starting and running a business, writing is a skill that is the cornerstone for inflating bottom lines.

Good Writing Shows Competence: Writers meticulously research while writing a piece. Sometimes they go to great lengths like interviewing people; visiting places and perhaps even live in certain areas to get a first hand feel of what it might be like, before they get down to writing. Yes, we moved on now and the web allows us to know anything without stepping out of our bedrooms, but then, the sheer ability to write on so many topics shows competence and flexibility.

Persuasive Writing Renders Personality: Why do I love Steven Wagenheim? That's because he has a personality. I've heard that he wasn't like this before and I've read his posts countless number of times. I just like him because he is what he is. His writing is persuasive, even if it is a remark or a long-winding post. His writings reek of personality, don't they? There are many more on this forum like Josh Anderson, Allen, etc, who do it remarkably well. When I am out looking to do business, I want to talk to people in a language they understand. Secret to web copy? You just read it.

Writing Makes Money: Starting from ghostwriting to actually making a six-figure income, I think writers have an upper hand over anyone else.Don't kill me for this, but see Steven.W., for an example. Writers can produce their own products; have the capability to understand technology and implement it for their own use (they would have written about it like a million times, eh?) -- even if they don't they can learn; promote the heck out of themselves using article marketing or social media marketing; write persuasive copy for their sales letters; communicate and keep in touch with their buyers. Need I say more?

Prolific, Soulful Writing Builds Relationships: Most importantly, Great writing enables relationships to be built. It forges friendships and much more. Such writing can make you cry, laugh, empathize and invoke all sorts of emotions in us. It is through this aspect that people form relationships that leads us to prosper in our business, life and everywhere else.

Your list is helpful, but I wish you would add some type of thought provoking questions or call for an opinion that would generate a good discussion.

    Thanks anyway, I read it.

      :-) That's right, Ryanman.

A very strong point that one. I only hope that it comes to fruition, for me and for everyone else.

Great post, thanks for sharing it here.

Course I am sure it brings up yet another more important question for many, how to learn how to write good in the first place.

Copywriting is definitely essential for online direct response marketing. Article marketing is an awesome traffic source, BUT it's not necessary to write the articles yourself.

You could easily find a quality writer and train them to follow your style of writing. Most good writers are able to emulate styles well.

Any content creation can be outsourced if you want it too. The only one that shouldn't be outsourced is email writing. It's important to keep the personal style and influence there.

Thanks for this great post. Writing is the driving force behind a successful IM campaign.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[373152].message }}
  • Yes, It's true that the writing can be done by either yourself or someone else who is good at this.

Yeah, the question remains as to how to train oneself to write better? When I asked this question around among my writer friends, one asnwer came screaming out -- write more than ever :-)

Great post and you're absolutely right!

Which is why I am so sick and tired of reading the same old copywriting formulas and cliches repeated ad nauseum. Yes, the "formula" works but it still needs to look fresh to be persuasive. Warriors, get creative in 2009 and inject something new into your copywriting and marketing!

A lot of writers kind of meander into the craft and miss some of the basics. Anyone who wants to learn writing - whether it be copy, fiction, or non-fiction - needs to know and practice the fundamentals. A good, short, inexpensive book that introduces them is "The First Five Pages" by Noah Lukeman.

I think that the reason becoming a great copywriter is a BIG deal is because in the process of learning, practicing and using the skill, you simply HAVE to learn human nature - wants, needs, how to connect effectively, etc.

Once you learn and understand human nature, coming up with valuable, profitable ideas and marketing them to people who want them becomes second-nature.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[374291].message }}
  • I am with you. And Derek is right, it is really about human behavior and psychology..the better you know people and why they behave in a particular way, the better off you are in trying to ascertain what's to be done.

If you put me up against a brick wall with a gun to my head and gave me
3 seconds to come up with what I felt was the most important skill to being
a successful Internet marketer, I'd say, without hesitation, communication
      in all forms...particularly writing.

I know some business models don't require a lot of this, at least not as much
as others, but I can't think of one business model that doesn't have some
form of communication attached to it that the marketer either has to learn
      himself or outsource to others.

      1. Sales letters
      2. Squeeze pages
      3. Blogs and other web 2.0 platforms
      4. Email newsleters, ads and even just responding to an inquiry
      5. Articles
      6. Forum participation
      7. Videos

There's more...lots more. Hell, if we didn't have communication of some
kind, this world would fall into a black hole.

I honestly don't see how you can succeed if you can't communicate
      effectively.

Interesting position on the laws of astrophysics. Arguably too much communication could lead to satellite chatter being picked up by a race of warlike alien overlords that enslave the population or simply destroy the earth.

So I guess either way we can't win.

It is effective communication, in all forms, as Steven also points out, that is truly "everything" in your marketing.

You don't need a sales letter to make money, but you do need to communicate on some level, to be effective.

Remember, writing does not communicate the actual tone of your voice or any body language, which together, makes up the majority of communication effectiveness.

This doesn't mean writing isn't important, but the overall picture suggest communication skills in general, must be considered.

  • Exactly, I couldn't have put it in a better manner. Communication is the center piece of all successful businesses.

Humans are different from animals based on just this factor alone, apart from other complex things our brain does like visualization, thinking and remembering things.

Animals communicate too. As do insects, fish and even some plants!

Most of them also visualise, think and remember!

I also believe that when you write, you put your mind in a state of action.

When you start writing and you get in the habit of doing it, your brain moves to a level you would never experience otherwise.

Writing puts your brain in a flow where so many good things happen. It's as if you're unclogging tubes so things can flow through them (all your thoughts and ideas) freely. The sense of clarity it can give you is priceless!

I can't tell you how much that clarity thing you said struck me. That's so true. When it hits you, you can just go bonkers.

That's why I believe that writers are a blessed lot. Their minds are forever ignited, blazing and bursting at seams with creativity.

I'd have to vote for point #3, as Steven so deftly demonstrated above.

I used to be somewhat of a grammar freak, thinking writing had to be "correct." But what it has to do is get through to the reader.

The same with speaking. If someone can't hear me or understand me, I prefer to make that my responsibility. Granted, some people will never understand, but if you take all the responsibility for the communication, you'll reach so many more people.

Once I saw that it was "OK" to write like you talk...and just get all that emotion and excitement out there, writing became fun and easy, and I'm pretty sure my writing became more interesting.

Don't forget stories either. Much better to start with...

"Tuesday evening I had just settled into my favorite cozy chair, when all of a sudden..."

    than...

"In this report, we're going to talk about a number of factors related to..."

Sure, each has its place, but a good story will grab just about anyone.

OK, stop me now - I can't stop writing!!!
