Massive Newbie needs help

Hi Guys,

I am very much a newbie and my needs are probably very different to most people on here.
At the moment I don't have a money site but reading all the articles here really excites me.
What I do have is my personal website. I am an hypnotherapist and psychotherapist in the UK, and there is competition.
All I need to know is, what strategy is best for me to adopt to get my site to page 1 google?
I have ordered from the special offers forum and got 1000 blog replies and directory submissions. I also add myself to about 10 forums a day.
My website is growing but for this type of business site, what would you recommend I should do to get my site up on Google.
I don't mind buying some software to help, I also don't mind writing if article submissions is the way to go.

Many thanks all

Chris

Take care you don't end up with bought packages that may include links from the dark adult rated part of the internet, could be a reputation issue.

Do you have a local practice? Google Places is easy to rank for, getting plenty of citations from other directories and several user reviews may move you to the prized top 7 map results on page 1.

Is your site keyword optimized? Try promoting your blog on Twitter if you are a specialist as it really helps you get tons of followers who may turn to into customers.

Btw, how massive are u ?

The question is, are you trying to get traffic to your website or are you trying to get your website to the top of Google? I know that you mentioned that your trying to get your website to the top of Google, but it also seems like everything you've done has been more related to traffic generation. Are you targeting any specific keywords? If you're trying to get to the #1 spot in Google, then SEO will be very important in this regards.

    Thanks all,
The question of traffic Vs position is very interesting as I hadn't thought of it that way (still learning). I have a local business in the UK and I Added my site to Google maps a while ago, after waiting over 6 weeks for the pin code activation letter to arrive!!
However, even after activating my pin code several weeks ago, I still don't appear on Google Places?
Is there a way I can boost this?
What I really need is that the site be on page 1 of Google for the key phrases. At the moment I am on page 1 for a few of them (very specific though) and on page 2 and 4 for most of the other phrases.
I guess the thing is, that it is a mine field of info out there and I know most of it is relative to creating affiliate sites. But if it works for them, could It work for me?
Does traffic = Rank or position?

Thanks all, this is a great forum.

    Regards

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

There are a lot of variables that play into ranking your website as well as how much traffic you'll get depending on the keywords.

You can get traffic to your website without being ranking #1 on Google for your keywords. However, ranking on spot #1 of Google for a keyword that gets relatively good exposure will help your website to get a steady flow of traffic with less continuous effort involved.

The SEO process involves two main factors, on page SEO and off page SEO. On page SEO is optimizing your site for your keywords. Off page SEO involves building backlinks, which it sounds like you've been doing a lot of.

The speed at which your site ranks in spot 1 of Google will also depend on various factors, such as the competition level of the keyword and the on page SEO and backlinking structure of your competitors.

I highly recommend that you pick up a guide about SEO or consult an SEO professional about helping to get your site to spot #1 in Google.

    Hi Chris,

Before you make investment on SEO, it is important that you understand the traffic you are likely to get by being on first page of Google.

I visited your site and looked for the 3 keywords that you are trying to rank for i.e.
    1) hypnotherapy warrington (58)
    2) hypnotherapist warrington (16)
    3) hypnotherapy cheshire (73)

When I typed your keywords in Google keyword tool, the number of exact searches per month is stated on against each keyword in brackets.

In addition, I think your site need on-site optimisation to rank well on Google for your chosen keywords.

As you are aiming to secure local business then I would definitely recommend optimising your Google places listing to rank well.

I know of at least one warrior of this forum, who will get you A listing on Google places.

    Hope this helps.

I noticed content was not mentioned yet. With Google's last Panda update, you need to make sure who have good quality content. Also try to get people talking about your content on social sites as the social graph is another indicator for Google. I know it's rather a broad answer, but just make sure if you buy any service or any offers, that they touch upon this.

      Thanks Guys,

Although I designed my site and added all the content, I left it up to a web company to piece it all together, host and optimise.
It sounds like they haven't optimised it properly just yet?

Is there a free tool out there that will tell me what needs to be optimised or enhanced to help me focus on that issue?

I am not too sure what the numbers mean against the search terms but I am here to be educated. That's why I love forums so much.

I am going to post some free hypnosis MP3's on my site soon. I will do some for success and post them on the correct forum as a way of saying thanks (and I also assume that this will help me get noticed )

      Cheers

Thank you so much. It is all so confusing but I am learning every day thanks to people like you guys. So I am very grateful. Couldn't PM to say thanks because I haven't posted enough.
I think I need a good long look at my site and see what I can do, because I cannot rely on the web company I use to do it. They have too many clients and don't really deliver.
If there is anything i should be referring to or any software I should be looking at to help me optimise please let me know.

    Very best regards

    Chris

      Hi Chris,

Just wanted to throw this out there as a hypnotherapist in training.

One thing I've always expected to make a huge difference and don't see very often on hypnosis websites is a video (or several). I know it's different in the UK but around here, people have a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis. Many people believe that you can hypnotized against your will to do all sorts of nasty things. A video can build a lot of rapport before they even meet you.

You can even make some video series and put them up on Youtube for the backlinks/traffic.

I know for myself that if I were in the market for a hypnotherapist, I'd choose the one who I trust the most.

    Hi Tim,

I think that is a really good idea. I try to dispel the misconceptions on the FAQ page and if I get a client, my pre talk is pretty good.
It's pretty competitive here and with the economic downturn, there are fewer people seeking help.
    It's tough.
I am fortunate to have friends who work in Television. So I think it's time to call in a favour
Professionally shot video and sound would make a difference, creating the look associated with professionalism and success.
    I'll look into this.

    Cheers

    Hi Chris ,

Look for another Web company to optimize your site ; as the present one is not delivering.

You stay focussed on providing quality contents ; informative videos and such as this is your strength. This is what differentiates you from other hypnotherapist since you say there is competition.

Btw , have you been looking at what your competitor are doing ; apart from looking at ranking on Google page 1 ?
