Where to start writing articles for money?

Hellow fellow warriors, I am a University Student from Canada with excellent English skills and currently in need of some secondary income. I was thinking about writing quality articles on Fivver and started my first gig.

I was wondering if any of you have any tips or hints to share with me. I am just beginning writing articles professionally, but rest assured; my three years in Electrical Engineering have provided me with enough practice to be able to tackle this challenge.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for the advice, I will take a look at those right away. Would you recommend creating my own "porfolio" site to showcase any of my articles or should I just stick to what I write on those sites and build my reputation there?

Also as I mentioned I am new to Fivver, so I was wondering how I could promote my gig and place it at the top of the list?

Well the first place you can start is the Warrior Forum in the Warriors For Hire area That's a cheap enough place to get started for right now and once you build a reputation for delivering high quality work then you'll find yourself getting repeat business from there.

On word of warning on Elance now - they're operating on a paid model. You can only bid for 10 jobs for free and my experience of the place has been mixed. If you're willing to write articles for $2 and $3 for the first few jobs then you'll enjoy the experience. The high paying writing jobs are there but you need to do a lot of cheaper jobs to build up your star rating. Just be aware it's not paved with gold there.

Personally speaking I've made FAR more money from my repeat customers from the WF than on the penny pinchers on Elance. Go figure.

    Tips?

    * Work hard and work 7 days a week on this.

    * Offer excellent prices to start like $5 for 400 words. Then increase it over time.

    * Be prepared to write on any topic - not just the ones you like

    * Unless you enjoy doing tedious work that takes hours try to avoid taking on word level article spins or article spins of any more than say 2 levels. Unless you're a sadist try not to get caught doing Linkjuicer spins.

    * If a client is hard work at the start (demanding, making changes, being stupidly critical) they'll continue being hard work later so unless they're paying you really well then cut them loose early on.

    * Don't be afraid to e-mail clients you've done work for previously and ask if there's any more writing work available.

    * Be yourself in your writing - your personality will sell your writing style to the people who will want to pay you more for it.

Man I should turn this into a short report and sell it somewhere! lol

I have been told that raising your prices can lose long term clients pretty often, is this true? I don't want to start too low and get stuck with cheap clients or start too high and not be able to find work.

You can always write review articles for products that sell well on Amazon and sell them in packages as PLR.

That way, you can get more money for the hard work you put in for good quality articles.

You can sell PLR on the Warrior Forum and places like Get PLR Products - The Top Place For Private Label Rights!.

    Good Success!

    Vondre'

P.S. PLR will always sell as long as content is the driving force on the internet.

A really good place would be Textbroker. They don't pay so well in the beginning, but if you get to be a level 5 writer, you get paid really well. It's a reputable place where they pay you about every 2 weeks.

There's a long list of articles and you can choose which one you want to write. Also, clients can choose you to write their articles as 'direct orders'.

      Good Luck

You can start writing articles on oDesk. As a newbie, you can start at $1 per 500 words, then work your way up as your oDesk rating grows.

Hey there, I recommend Elance and peopleperhour. The latter is a British site, but increasingly has an international presence. While I agree that it can be hard to make good money on these sites, they are great for picking up experience and getting long term clients.

I have always bid at a reasonable rate of about $10 or more for 500 words and never had any trouble getting work.

I have written several blog posts on finding freelance work on my blog, if you want to take a look.
    Good luck!

      Hi there

Best of luck with your venture. Writing as a person who has used lots of freelance writers on odesk, please bear in mind that writing for SEO purposes is different from writing articles. As a customer it is really depressing when people say they can write SEO stuff, and the samples they provide indicate this could be true, and then when the material comes back, it seems they really don't know about SEO after all - eg: changing the keywords from singular to plural or other way round etc. So if you are skilled in SEO, that's something worth highlighting and not taking for granted.

Also, having a native english speaker really does give you an advantage. There is such increasing emphasis on original content now, that providing good quality copy is a real advantage.

I agree with the comment on spinning - I had to redo an article that a spinner had done (!) and that took me two hours - it's tedious work, but really important for SEO purposes, but I would stay away from it by preference.

You can make money writing for freelance sites such as Elance, have a look at Nick Brighton's WSO on making money writing on Elance.

As someone else has mentioned, PLR is a good option. Check out Peggy Baron's book on getting started writing PLR -

And, when you're ready to take your plr business to the next level, Tiffany Dow puts out a great report about setting up a website selling plr -

No affiliate links in there, just products I've found helped me out a lot on my own journey. You don't need to buy anything, there's enough info out there to help you get started, but these will save you time and get you on the right track quicker.

The money is in the repeat clients. Once you build your reputation you will be able to maintain a price that both you and your clients are happy with.

This is not an overnight thing and there is a lot of competition for writers. If you want the best deal for your writing then forget eLance - their fees suck all the proceeds from your efforts. Start with the Warriors looking for members to hire section - its amazing how you can get 'leads' just by answering an ad or two here.

Also offer to write articles for free so that you get an 'appraisal' of your writing skills and a gauge of where your skills really lie and where they need improvement.

At the start you will have to 'write until your fingers bleed' but that is no different to any other business

    Good luck

The Warrior Forum should provide you with more than enough work. I often see writers being swamped with work after they put up attractive offers as WSOs or in the Warrior for Hire section.
