which adjusment would be better for my domain purchase?

I am about to buy a domain for a niche, but it seems there isnt any .com,.net or .org for the niche. it is better that i just add "the" to the domain or use .biz, .us ?

You could use hyphens between the words

I actually just started using the dot co extension which I really like. Is it possible to use prefixes like "e" or "i" ?

Are we talking about appearance, here, or SEO?

      Or perhaps both?

If you're adding letters/words to the main keyword, for a domain-name, you need to add them after the keyword, not before. In my opinion ...

Google says openly, and repeatedly, and quite forcefully, that neither hyphenation nor domain-extensions (other than specific country ones) is in any way relevant to SEO at all (poor Matt Cutts must be going blue in the face from saying it all so many times, on video, in writing, on his own blog, on Google's blog and so on), but there are still Warriors who say even he's wrong about it. You'll never get people to agree about these subjects.

Most of us are attuned to typing in the dot com, org extensions so that's what I would go with to be honest with you. Unless the domain looks atrocious with the prefix added I would do that.

Well I've heard that the dot co seems to be picking up steam. I have it for a niche blog right now and it seems to be doing ok. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference.

There's nothing that has as much value as a .COM domain name.

I suggest your try to find a suffix of prefix that would eventually help you brand yourself. Adding "the" is somewhat a good idea however not as much as branding yourself.

You could add hyphens, and an extra word like "the", or add a random letter at the end of the domain name (x or v seems to work well). Otherwise, I would pick a different domain name. You could probably rank with a .biz domain, but it takes a bit more work, from my experience.

I like to use the word "the" because Google completely ignores that word so your domain will appear to Google as keyword, rather than "thekeyword"

I am not an expert on domain names, but I can tell you what I do when looking to register a domain.

Obviously first I look for "mydomainname.com".

    Then I look for "my-domain-name.com".

Google treats a domain with dashes no different (as far as I know) than one without dashes when it comes to ranking it (most of my domains have dashes).

If both forms are already taken, depending on the type of site the domain name is for, I add a prefix like "buy" or a suffix like "review".

If the domain is for an authority site, instead of registering a ".com" with dashes and (or) prefixes and suffixes, I look for a ".org" extension. I have read somewhere that Google ranks ".org" about the same way as ".com" and in my experience this seems to be true.

A lot of IM'ers don't like domains with dashes because they don't look as "tidy" as domains without and people searching are more likely to type a domain name without dashes. They don't like extensions other than ".com" for similar reasons.

However, I don't think that this is a big problem as most visitors will find a site by searching online and clicking on a link in the search results, or by clicking on a link inside an email, as opposed to typing a site's URL into their browsers.
