To audio experts! Sound with Camtasia

Hi,

I am using a Samson CO1U USB Studio Condenser microphone which from my understanding is a reasonable microphone to use for recording audio.

I am using Camtasia to record both screenshot and also Powerpoint.

However, when I record the PPT, the sound is not very good with a lot of background noise whereas with the normal screenshot it is pretty good.

I have checked the settings and they all seem the same.

Anyone had this problem or any advice on how to fix it.

Haven't had this problem. I always record in Powerpoint using Camtasia. Can I ask, how do you record in Powerpoint. Do you open up Powerpoint and use the Camtasia Powerpoint plugin? If not then you should.

Also make sure you let your recordings run for 5-10 seconds at the beginning without talking so you can then select that part of your track and have Camtasia remove all your background noise.

Yes I am using the plugin. I suspect if I were just recording it straight, I wouldn't have the problem. Good tip re first few seconds...

Ben,

Are you going into the Camtasia settings through your Camtasia Powerpoint plugin and making sure the correct microphone is selected? When I first started doing this my external mic would get used when I did screencast videos however when I did Powerpoint presentations it was just using the laptops regular microphone. I eventually realized I had to go into the Powerpoint Camtasia settings and select the external microphone from the dop down box of audio inputs. That sorted the problem for me.

Yes. The exact same seetings are there as in the normal camtasia recording.

You may need to move the mic further towards you. I have found my condenser mic is super sensitive to noise, so i also have a windscreen on mine. I have also had the same problem as Will where my computer uses the wrong mic. I also run my mic through a pre-amp so I have maximum play with editing and volume.

It seems that the problem was something to do with my webcam. For some reason, even though I chose the mic, when I opened up the settings again it was defaulting my webcam.

So I unplugged my webcam.

It now defaults to HD Audio Rear Input, but is actually recording nicely from the proper microphone.

So, now have great sound.
